In the US, he would walk simply because he toted a whupping by the law enforcement types. The ACLU would be all up in that.

But i am guessing that in whatever former Soviet bloc country that was, he is in a gulag and will never make it to trial.

Probably not. Don't forget the first rule of assassinations (or attempts) and that is: kill the assassin. I guess the second rule is make sure to use a reliable method in the actual assassination.

The intarwebz news sites are saying that he will not be charged with any attempt to kill, as the gun was apparently a gas pistol loaded with pepper spray.

Also, prosecutors are contemplating bringing charges against the people who were kicking and hitting him.
