A year shy of TWO CENTURIES of experience on this coaching staff. Not counting Malzahn.

Over a CENTURY of SEC experience.

AUBURN, Alabama –  There are three coaches who were recruiting coordinators in 2012 . The overall college  coaching experience is 199 years.

SEC experience: 103 seasons.

Gus Malzahn relied on experience when assembling his new Auburn coaching staff, a staff he completed Friday when he hired former Arkansas assistant Tim Horton as his tight ends coach. The average age of the new staff 48.3, with four assistants in their 50s and one in his 60s. The age swing goes from 29-year-old offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee to 61-year-old defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

Horton coached running backs at Arkansas. But he was also the recruiting coordinator, just like new hire Dameyune Craig was at Florida State and December hire Rodney Garner was at Georgia. Garner has the title of recruiting coordinator  at Auburn on a coaching staff where titles are plentiful.

Garner is also the associate head coach and defensive line coach, Rich Bisaccia is the  assistant head coach and running backs coach,  Lashlee is the offensive coordinator, Craig is the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach, Johnson is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and Charlie Harbison is co-defensive coordinator and a secondary coach.

The other assignments: J.B. Grimes is the offensive line coach and Melvin Smith is a secondary coach.

I've never liked these statistics.

My 5th period class has 240 years of experience with learning the English language, but they still can't write a coherent paragraph.

It's like I said in another thread.  There was something wrong.....something reeeally wroooonnnng with Chizik and his staff. I have no clue what it really was but it had nothing to do with how good/bad the coaches were.  Everything that's happened since Malzahn's hire has been boner-esque, with the exception of some of the recruits defecting.  No way am I going to claim or even think it's going to be an immediate turn around.  Shit got bad.  But...and this is probably an indication of how bad things have gotten when I use this comparison....look what Ole Miss did.  Went from 10 losses, to hiring a new staff, recruited well and brought in some JUCO talent.  Immediately competitive.  Don't know what OM will do in the future but they were night and day better.  I can see that next year and I can live with it while we build.

How is this any different then how you felt about the old staff.
I'll put it this way, I feel better about this staff than Coach Chizik's initial staff and I was estatic about that initial staff...Coach Malzahn just landed a full staff of Great Coaches and Recruiters (with four Excellent Recruiters in CB Coach Melvin Smith, Safety Coach Charlie ”Cheese”, DL Coach Rodney Garner & WR Coach Dameyune Craig).

IMO, it looked like Coach Malzahn put together a list of Top Coaches at each position that were not only great coaches but great recruiters in each State in the Southeast and it just so happened that nearly all have a connection at some point in either their coaching career or playing career (that's huge, they don't have to ”get to know each other”, they already know each other, so there's your familiarity and cohesiveness among the coaching staff built in).

You also have a Head Coach that knows where the weaknesses are on the team and he'll address those weaknesses with JUCO players or top end HS players.

About Coach Chizik's staff there were only four coaches that I was extremely happy with (Malzahn, Trooper, Rocker & Thigpen) the other coaches I didn't really know how good they'd be in both recruiting and coaching.

Coach Malzahn's staff I'm Extremely, Extremely excited about eight coaches (Lashlee, Bisaccia, Horton, Craig, Garner, Smith, Harbison & Johnson). Why? Because they are all proven great coaches and even better recruiters & and Lashlee has only been a D1 coach for one season, but he's one of the up and coming young guns among coaches.

That's how it's different.

Saddest thing I've read all day.

Hope is a good thing.  Maybe the best thing.

Yep.

And here's where I see the hope:

The one major plus of Gene Chizik and his staff was recruiting.  We were bringing in stud after stud but failing to do shit with any of them and failing to recruit the right players at the right positions.

Dameyune Craig to me is like Luper.  He killed us on the recruiting trail and was revered for his coaching.  We know Craig.  He's an Auburn man.  He may have played for Bowden in a shitty program, but he has a lot of experience at multiple schools.  While not necessarily an upgrade, I say he's on par with Luper.

Rodney Garner is the replacement for Trooper Taylor.  He is one of the best recruiters in the country and is probably dirty doing it.  However, he doesn't wear his hat backward.  He does swing towels.  He doesn't chest bump, and there's never been anything sour to say about his behavior as a coach.  He's a big upgrade from Trooper Taylor while maintaining that same high level of recruiting.

The other guys have a lot of experience and most of them are highly touted around the country.

We have EVERY reason to hope that Malzahn - who has been very successful at EVERY coaching stop except for the 2011 season which has been documented as a Chizik-controlled fuck up - can run a good program that enables these coaches and the studs they recruit to be successful.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.
