Report: Cam Newton fined $21,000 for bumping referee

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A person familiar with the penalty says the NFL has fined Panthers quarterback Cam Newton $21,000 for abusive conduct toward a game official.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the league hasn't announced the fine.

Newton shouted at and bumped referee Jerome Boger in the fourth quarter of Carolina's penalty-plagued 17-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

Newton apologized after the game, saying "the words that I said during the game were very disrespectful and I apologized to (Boger) during the game, but I'm going public and apologizing again. It was something in the heat of the moment."

Boger said he didn't feel the bump was enough to warrant an ejection because it "wasn't of a malicious nature."

Can I just say again FUCK Roger Goodell and FUCK the NFL as an organization.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been fined $21,000 by the NFL for abusive conduct toward a game official during Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, a league source told the Observer.

Newton was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for what referee Jerome Boger referred to after the game as “disrespecting an official.” Newton was arguing there should have been a late hit penalty on Oakland safety Mike Mitchell.

On Wednesday, Newton said he had not heard from the league nor did he expect to. A source told the Observer earlier in the week the league would review the contact and a fine was possible. CBSSports.com first reported the fine.

Newton was wearing a microphone during the game, and clips from Sunday’s game were played on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” on Wednesday night.

“Let me talk to you after the game,” Newton told Boger.

“I apologize. It won’t happen again,” Newton told the referee after he took a knee to end the 17-6 Panthers’ victory.

This is Newton’s first fine in his two-year career in the NFL. The NFL rulebook states an official may eject a player for such behavior, but Boger said after the game he did not consider ejecting Newton.

“I’d like to start by apologizing to the referee Jerome Boger,” Newton said at his postgame news conference. “The words that I said were very disrespectful. It was just in the heat of the moment and just apologizing so next time I see him we’ll be on good terms.”

That play would’ve been a flag had it been on Brady, Manning, etc…. The Raiders player drove Cam into the ground with all his weight long after Cam had thrown the ball. Even the Raiders were saying after the game that they were intending to take Newton out of the game. See link below.

The kick looks bad. It is intentionally sped up so that the kick looks more intense and also to obscure the fact that the Raiders lineman shoved his leg down and started twisting it while all his teammates are celebrating on top of him.

Kelly: Raiders wanted to take out Newton

Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said his defense was trying to knock Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton out of Sunday's game after the Panthers did the same to Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer.

"You take our guy out, we're going to take your guy out,'' Kelly told the Contra Costa Times. "We're not out to hurt someone, but when that happens ... ."

Greg Hardy took Palmer out of the game on a hit where he was penalized for roughing the passer.

There was one play where Kelly retaliated at Newton, who had kicked him in the pile. Kelly was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

"He kicked me, and I ain't fixing to take that off nobody," Kelly said. "What are you going to do when someone kicks you? You going to take it? Nah.''

Raiders coach Dennis Allen didn't sound impressed with that explanation, saying, ""We're trying to change the culture, and what we have to understand is we have to keep our composure in those types of situations because nothing good comes out of it."

Where's Kaos when you need him to explain to me how the Godly Raiders are just playing the game, while the Saints are vile inexcusable thugs?

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Cam F'd up.  Lost his cool.  He got fined.  Apologized immediately to the ref and afterwards.  Just shows me he's playing the game with fire.  Shit happens.

And his QB rating for that game was better than Sanchez's the week before.

I'm not saying that what the Raiders player did was right, but does that make it OK for every QB in the league to get in the face of a ref and disrespect them anytime the QB feels there should have been a roughing the passer?  I've got no problems at all with Cam, and I think he is a really good player.  However, he has came off like a little bitch this season.

He did and immediatley recognized it.  Tried to make amends and admitted he screwed up.  He got popped and I'll bet he keeps it in check next time.

The media & Twitter are acting like he deliberately pushed the ref. Like he violently struck him. Clearly the very very very little contact that was made was entirely accidental. Worthy of a $21,000 fine? Really?

The ref knew it wasn't malicious. He wasn't offended.

Draconian overreaction, as is Goodell's M.O.

Might have something to do with the fact that he had 11 less attempts because he was getting his shit kicked in.
