I think I've given up on American politics and any hope for the future.
20 6 and 7 year old children were murdered last Friday. What's the first thing it did? Spark a fierce debate that portrays our country as being as divided as ever.
It didn't bring us together. Tell us to put our petty troubles behind us. Encourage us to drop our guard and feel for each other a little.
It just gave us another opportunity to fight and bicker and claw each other's eyes out.
When 9/11 happened, it was said that our nation united against a common enemy. I remember watching George Bush on tv and the news pundits showering him with plaudits for his valiant effort to pull us through such a difficult time.
And even during the last eight years, when the left brought on vicious attacks against George Bush and when the right brought on vicious attacks against Barack Obama, I thought that something could happen to unite us again. A terrorist attack. A war. A tragedy of some sorts that opened our eyes to what really matters in life.
But if 20 6 and 7 year old children being slaughtered by a crazed gunman can't do it, then nothing can. I feel like we're in the shitter until the whole thing crumbles no matter who is in leadership.
