I don't remember South Carolina running the Nickle Package as their base defense. Not sure if that would work against the LSUs, uats & UGAs of the world with their power running game

I'd take that over the 4-2-4 we run with Jake Holland.

I'm not in the same "I don't like Ellis Johnson" boat as them, but there is this:

Ted Roof - Decent defensive coordinator.  Takes over Duke and goes 1-11, 0-12, and 1-11.  Becomes Auburn defensive coordinator after subpar hiring of Gene Chizik.

Ellis Johnson - Decent defensive coordinator.  Takes over Southern Miss and goes 0-12.  Becomes Auburn defensive coordinator after subpar hiring of Gus Malzahn.

Roof and Johnson both good DCs everywhere they've been (except roof at auburn but I still think that was chiz). I don't count their hc record against them in re to a DC job.

How do you figure?  Alabama was in nickel for the majority of the games against LSU and UGA.  Nickel is especially helpful against HUNH attacks because of versatility of personnel, and the fact that sometimes you can't sub.  Nickel is pretty good to use against teams that have power running games, but have equal ability to throw.

Ellis Johnson is 61 on Christmas. Needs to get paid. Now. Not getting HC gig again. Auburn offer of ~900K+, anticipated FSU offer of ~600K.

Kinda pricey for his first year here, but if he's our guy, I guess go for it.

No matter how much they pay, it will seem like too much when we see the performance that usually accompanies Gus's offense.

Difference between ellis and ted: Ted had chizik as his hc. He goes to psu and all of a sudden learns to coach again cause his defense was 19th in the nation in scoring.

Point of the day. Also, this is different for Ellis because Gus is a offensive nutcase and I doubt will be micromanaging the D.

True.

EJ is old school and has buttloads of exp. Hes been in some bad situations under some not so good hc's.

I do know he loves him some 4-2-5

He does have some pretty strong mentors along the way.

1975 - Defensive Ends Coach at The Citadel (HC Bobby Ross)
1984 - DC at Appalachian State (HC Mack Brown)
1990-1993 - DC at uat (HC Gene Stallings)
2008-2011 - DC at South Carolina (HC Steve Spurrier)

He was the OLB coach under Stallings.

He left to be Clemson's DC from 95-96, then came back as the DC at Bama from 97-2000 under Dubose.

Our bad offense beat their "badass" defense in 2011.  Just saying...
