Rob Pate on the radio:
"If you keep this staff together you've got a chance at having four straight top ten classes."
What needs to be said:
There's no excuse for the performance AU is getting out of three straight top ten classes. Will adding a fourth change the lack of development, the regression from many?
I watched a junior high game last night and aside from the sideways snap which was a beautiful thing, the rest of what I saw made me weep. I saw linebackers scrape down the line and fill holes. I saw scrawny little kids put a hat across the body and wrap people up. I saw players in the open field break down facing a ball carrier, watch his hips and force him to commit ... and then make the play when he did. I didn't see anybody diving at players in the open field hoping to maybe take their ankles out. I saw a quarterback take the ball in the shotgun, take three steps and deliver the ball on the third. I saw a junior high QB check down. Crossing route wasn't open he checked to the deep post and it was covered so he went to the third option, a back that had flared out of the backfield. 16 yard gain, first down. I saw a junior high QB recognize the fucking blitz and dish it off to the hot route underneath. I saw a junior high QB step up to avoid rush from the corners when the pocket collapsed and then hit a receiver on a slant.
I saw good form. I saw disciplined play. I saw players who were usually in the right place and doing their jobs. When they weren't where they were supposed to be or didn't wrap up or didn't make the right decision I saw coaches get on their ass and explain what they'd done wrong.
In short, I saw everything that Auburn football is currently NOT. And it made my soul ache.
