Chizik SHOULD BE Worried About His Job Security

AUBURN, Alabama - If you lose to a program that had become a laughingstock, what does that make you?

If you lose to a coach that had become a punch line, who’s the joke on now?

If you have an extra week to prepare and you look unprepared, if you have one top-10 recruiting class after another and you pile double-digit defeat on double-digit defeat, if you have to apologize to your fans for the product you put on the field in your fourth year on the job, shouldn’t you be concerned about your job security?

“I’m never concerned about my job security,” Gene Chizik said Saturday. “I’m very comfortable with myself working really hard, and I plan on being at Auburn next year.”

Those were strong words after one of the weakest efforts of his tenure, but as anyone who knows the history of Auburn football understands, plans can change. Coaches, like jet planes, can come and go.

In the short term, something’s gotta give around here after Arkansas 24, Auburn 7.

It’s getting harder and harder to pin down Chizik’s worst defeat as his team keeps hitting new lows, but letting John L. Smith get the better of you might put this one over the top.

Look at it this way. The Arkansas team that lost to Alabama and Texas A&M by a combined 100 points beat Auburn by 17, and the Tigers never led. In the final 36 minutes, they never got the ball with a chance to take the lead.

The Auburn defense was good for a while but got no help because the offense was bad from the start. The ugly numbers: Eight sacks, five turnovers, seven points. After moving from the booth to the field on game day two weeks ago, there’s no place else for rookie offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler to go.

Auburn changed quarterbacks at halftime, subbing Clint Moseley for Kiehl Frazier, but that move felt more like desperation than inspiration. Arkansas pulled away in the fourth quarter for its first win in 35 days, and most of the Auburn fans walked away long before the final whistle.

“I didn’t see the fans leave,” Chizik said, “but I don’t blame them.”

Many of them wouldn’t say the same about him.

As bad as this defeat was, the worst part for Chizik is it wasn’t an outlier. It was the latest evidence of a disturbing trend.

Auburn has lost its last five SEC games, three of them this year, by a combined score of 151-48. Auburn didn’t score more than 14 points in any of those games and surrendered less than 24 in only one of them - and still lost.

Since winning the national championship, Auburn is now 9-9 overall. Since proving itself the best team in the nation, Auburn now has the worst record in the SEC.

In 21 months, Chizik has piloted this program from first to worst, and there were precious few signs Saturday that things are going to get much better anytime soon. At 1-4, the Tigers have to beat everyone left on the schedule but Georgia and Alabama just to finish 6-6 and stagger into a bowl game.

What are the odds that Chizik can stop the bleeding quickly enough to hurdle even that low bar? It seems more likely that the Tigers are going to finish with a losing record and test Pat Dye’s theory about Chizik’s job security.

On Wednesday, the former Auburn coach told an Arkansas radio show that Chizik wouldn’t be in danger of losing his job even if his team didn’t win another game this year.

Three days later, the Tigers looked perfectly capable of doing just that - running the table, backward.

What does it say about a coach when he gets two votes of confidence in one week - one from himself, the other from his benefactor - and that’s double his number of victories on the season?

It says talk is cheap, and never mind that his buyout is expensive to the tune of $7.5 million. What does it cost to go from rebuilding to watching the building come apart brick by brick?

Keep in mind, we're talking about historic lows.  Worst Auburn team of all time.  You hear that?  THE WORST?  That's not just "Let's bitch about our coach and wish for a new one" type of shittiness.

I'd say the loss to Arkansas is the bottom of the barrel, but we aren't finished yet.  Ole Miss and Vanderbilt are next.

And don't you dare start talking about how awful it will be to go 3-9.  New Mexico State and Auburn are probably even, and don't look now, but Alabama A&M is 6-0.

I can strongly disagree with Dye. If Chizik goes win 0'fer on the remaining schedule, he will not be here the next. At least thats what common sense tells me. I imagine that what will happen though is there will be a different OC for next year and Van Gorder will probably be given more choices on who the assistants are on
the defensive side of the ball. Auburns history with coaches tells me this, not common sense.

Even in 98, we beat Ole Miss.  This is far far worse than 1998.

I do agree with you, its not acceptable but like I said, my statement is based on Auburns history of
dealing with coaches. I'm just not going to let my imagination create some sort of reality of
expectations that we will be looking at a whole new coaching staff for 2013.

I'm all out of patience. You know one of the things that sucks about all of this is after many years of
lackluster recruiting, we have finally seen several years of bringing in top tier talent. Now that we have
this said talent, we have a coaching staff that doesn't seem to know what to do with it.

Agree with most everyone here but nothing happens with Dye crony Jay Jacobs in the way.
Sadly, a severe case of apathy is the only thing the fanbase can supply in light of a recent NC. Meanwhile the programs that have been suffering recently are making a comeback as we linger in this undeveloped stage or as K says a rooster fucking a picture frame.
