Thinking about LSU
« on: September 21, 2012, 12:06:44 PM »
I never really hated LSU that much.  I always looked forward to playing them when we did, but preferred playing them early in the season.  Some of my best and worst Auburn memories are wrapped up in purple and gold.

Worst:  1988 at Baton Rouge.  Pat Dye, God love him, was so stubborn that day. So conservative. So hesitant to just throw the big punch, so careful in trying not to lose and putting all his faith in the defense. Dye himself has lamented that day's effort and blamed himself.  Leading 6-0 (and a touchdown on either series would have won the game) with less than 2:00 in the game and they score on a 4th down pass with seconds left.  It was like a vampire sucked all the life out of me.  Win that game and guess who's playing Notre Dame for the national title?

Best: I want to say 2004, the Interception game or maybe the Fake FG game but I won't.  The best for me was 7-3 in 2006.  Was on the floor for that one and I've never seen a more brutal, physical, punishing game in my life.  When players came back to the bench, they came back with glazed eyes and grim expressions.  They looked like gladiators after an all day battle. And when they went back out it wasn't bouncing and crowd waving and dancing, it was take a lunch pail because they were going to work.  When that game was over the noise on the field was so loud I thought I was going to have a heart attack.   The ground was literally shaking. Vision was distorted by the wall of sound.  It was like the end of a war or something.  That one sticks with me.

Worst: I was just a kid 71 or 72 and went with my dad and it rained and rained and rained. And we lost like 7-3 that day.

Best: 2010 Got game tickets early in the year and before Cam was breaking out. And as always it was nice to come home. After we won you could tell on everybody face that we had a shot to go all the way and Cam was a true Heisman candidate.

And outside of Baton Rouge they are some of the best people to tailgate with.

The LSU game is my favorite of the year.  I'm from New Orleans, so it's a good game for me to talk to my family about.  My dad's a big LSU fan.

Best of all, it's a great excuse to cook cajun food.

It's an intense rivalry game between two teams that share the same mascot.  It's not a rivalry of hate (Alabama) or a rivalry of inconvenience (Georgia, which is just a blip before the Iron Bowl).

It's a rivalry that should have a huge impact on the SEC West.

Worst LSU Game - Obviously last year.  That was the first time I really saw the Auburn Tigers lay down to an opponent.  By the 2nd half, their players were using kickoff as a means of practicing kill shots.  I had strolled into the football weekend with confidence. Auburn was going to be Auburn.  Auburn was going to, as always, shock the world and announce our presence in the SEC.  But we didn't.  We had our buttholes stuffed into our throats and limped away wondering what the hell was going on with our team.

Best LSU Game - I'm going to go unconventional - 2007 in Baton Rouge.  A very close game with plenty of action and a thrilling loss at the end when Matt Flynn connected with Byrd in the back of the endzone.  Sure, it was a loss.  That sucked. But the experience was the best.  I had never been to a game in Baton Rouge. I got to hang out all day eating the best tailgate food I've ever had and spent the entire time with family.  Had plenty of LSU fans talk trash to me, but they were generous with their Abitas and food.  We had great seats in the Auburn section, watched Mike the Tiger growl about fifteen feet in front of us, and afterwards, watched a drunk LSU girl walk around with her chest exposed screaming Tiger Bait.

Obviously, 2004 is the best game, and 2006 was the hardest hitting close game I've ever seen (talk about heart from a football player, Brandon Cox, wow), but 2007 is the more vivid memory for me.

Several LSU games stand out but it's their fans that have given me some of the best/worst experiences.  We've had some great tailgate experiences in the past few years alone.  But, I've also had far more negative things go on with that fanbase than any other.  I honestly have never had a real run in with a Bama fan at an Iron Bowl and I've rarely missed one since the late 70's.  Never been to Tuxalooser though.

Standing in line years ago with my wife and little girl at the BBQ Shack on College.  Two LSU guys right in front of us just launching F-Bombs Borges style at everything AU.  Purposely trying to be start shit.  They stopped.

On College at one game, saw something I'd never seen before.  Just stood there in amazement.  4-5 LSU guys standing at the curb, cussing every AU fan that walked by, challenging them to a fight.  WTF?

Tailgating in one of the fields out Donahue, when they used to let you park there.  A truck full of LSU guys pulls up behind us.  Doors open, beer cans roll out and they start flinging empties all over the place.  Immediately start walking toward JHS screaming and hollering Hey Auburn, fuck you, over and over.  That was the game we won like 40-0.  Came back and the beer can were still there.  Truck wasn't.

Yeah, their fans can be great and there's always some bad apples in everyone's bunch.  But LSU?  Many of theirs take it to a new level.

Pregame 2006 some of them were spraying beer on the band where Tigerwalk ends.  Beer was later sprayed on the players.

In South Louisiana that's a standard greeting.  They were just trying to be friendly.

Seems 2006 is a recurring theme here and I have to agree.  I remember the crowd chanting Brandon's name as he lay there in pain and getting chills as he got up and kept fighting.  Heart no doubt.  I'm sure our current field general would respond in much the same way...

Worst would be 2009.  Went down with friends and without a ticket and lucked up on a scalper selling a great ticket midway up on the 50 yard line... smack dab in a sea of purple and gold.  Getting back to Bourbon St & the Barely Legal Club was the only highlight of that night.

Though I'm sure tomorrow will take 2009's place unless anyone wants to make a run to Columbus after the game?

Couple of LSU fans today downtown Auburn. I'm watching as the dude gets shit out of the back of his car. A coke can falls off the tailgate, he sees it but doesn't pick it up. Goes about getting the rest of his stuff and closes the trunk. I know the fucker is not gonna leave trash laying on the ground (I hate when people do that) roll down the window.

Oh hey you dropped that can I don't want you to forget it.

He went and got it.

That's right bitch!

Nice choices.
I think Tubs could prepare a team as well as anyone but that Eddie Fuller grab in front of the post still ruins my overall impression of Dye as a big game coach.

That particular game with LSU is my all-time worst loss as a fan.

Much is made of the term "playing not to lose" but to me it doesn't matter what approach you take as long as you have a way to win it when it counts, especially when you know you have the best team. Dye seemed to want the other team to beat itself into submission, almost relishing in the struggle as time ran out.
Most noteworthy winners are rarely known as big game coaches, not when their aim is to put you away early. Interested to see which way Miles chooses to go this evening. Hope we have enough fight and hang around close enough to make it interesting.

Not coming across as a name dropper because really, who gives a shit but I graduated HS and entered Auburn with the guy. Brandon was the anti-Cam. A quiet leader to Cam's larger than life persona but a leader nonetheless. Spent more post-game nights swigging shots in the dim lights of Supper Club than taking over the DJ booth at Skybar to blast "All I Do is Win" and really never relished the spotlight but damn sure enjoyed the game... and gave it all he had.  Still keep in touch and you'll never find a former player more in love with Auburn... Even amidst the cluster fuck that was the beginning of his senior year.
