Makes me wonder if Malzahn truly WAS masking a lot of our deficiencies last year. I mean, I know we looked bad last year but the shit I see this year is an abortion. I take everything I said bad about Loeffler back. I was wrong. He gave KF plenty of chances in the playcalling (as evidenced in some stills posted). KF just froze up. I'm not sure Loeffler can do much else. I really think he was not developed properly. Player development starts with the HC - how you bring them along, get them in games, mentor them, make sure they are learning, etc. Holland and Frazier were both 4 star, top 10 in their position recruits. They were talented at some point. Enough to be ranked that high and for other major D1 programs to want them. We have regressed both of these guys.
We're not allowed to see all of practices, so we can't know what is going on all the time. It's difficult for me to believe that BVG has had the success he's had, and doesn't know how to build a defense, and defensive players from the ground up.
It's difficult for me to believe that with all the programs, coaches, and players he's been around that Loeffler doesn't know how to build an offense, and know the skills needed at each position to make it work.
Same same for the other assistants, with the understanding that some ACs are kept around more for their recruiting skills than coaching skills, but still then, it's the job of the coordinator to make sure that coach knows the things he's supposed to coach each day, and focus on. No AC is, or rather should not be, left to his own devices to coach his position. The the coordinator should direct what skills are taught, and may even have directives on how they're to be taught, though I would expect that if Loeffler gives Grimes the assignment on a particular day to focus on say pass pro, then he'll give grimes the Xs and Os part, but let Grimes decide how to teach the individual skills.
Some have railed on Grimes, but I don't get it. The OL in 2009 was good, stellar in 2010, and poor last year with 3 Fr starting, yet improved this year with the same number of Fr starting. To me, OL is not a major issue this year, and the same can't be said for almost any other position except maybe RB/FB, and to a lesser extent WR/TE. We do at least have one of each that can catch if Frazier ever gets them the ball. DL, LBs, and DBs suck monkey nuts with the exception of the DEs. Whittaker is, IMHO, a bust for his recruiting ranking of 4 star, 5th at his position, and 54th in the nation. He's a Jr. He even had some time under The Rock. He's done jack shit.
Something is missing in the development process. I don't know what it is, but Chiz better fucking figure it out.
