Jonesboro Sun: Dyer Dismissal At Arkansas State Likely Stems From March Traffic Stop
by Chris Bahn

7/30/2012 at 6:45am

Michael Dyer's only playing time for ASU ends up being the spring game. He suited up and played, but has been dismissed from the team and will not play for the Red Wolves.

Running back Michael Dyer is finished at Arkansas State before he ever really got started.

Dyer's dismissal — before he ever played a down — was announced Sunday through a statement from Coach Gus Malzahn.

“I am truly disappointed that it didn’t work out here at ASU for Mike,”Malzahn said. “I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future.”

According to a Jonesboro Sun report written by Matt Roberson, the dismissal is likely related to a March traffic stop in White County. Dyer was pulled over by an Arkansas State Trooper who found marijuana and a gun in his vehicle. Video of the traffic stop was obtained by The Sun through a Freedom of Information Act filed by the Searcy Daily Citizen.

It is unclear who was in possession of the gun and marijuana, per the newspaper's report. Trooper Royce Denney issued Dyer a speeding ticket and no charges were filed stemming from the discovery of the handgun or drugs. Per The Sun Denney is currently under investigation for his handling of the stop.

The Sun has details of conversations between Dyer and Denney caught on the officer's in-car video camera. (It's worth the $.99 one-day subscription fee.)

"You’ve got a career ahead of you, but you’re being a total dumb ass right now,” Denney apparently says to Dyer during the stop.

Dyer was supposed to be getting a second chance with the Red Wolves. He was suspended indefinitely at Auburn at the end of the regular season. Dyer testified in April during an armed robbery trial that his gun was used in the crime and he admitted to routinely smoking marijuana and synthetic marijuana.

Malzahn, Dyer's offensive coordinator at Auburn, was willing to give the former Little Rock Christian star another opportunity. Dyer helped generate interest in the program with media and recruits and the player's talent was obvious from his two 1,000 yard seasons and his championship game offensive MVP award during Auburn's 2010 BCS title.

Less than two weeks ago — and four months after the traffic stop — that Dyer and Malzahn held a joint press conference to discuss the running back's intention to stay at ASU beyond 2012. Dyer would have been eligible for the NFL Draft at the end of the season even though he is ineligible to play for the Red Wolves.

A waiver seeking immediate playing time for Dyer was denied by the NCAA. Dyer said on July 20 that he wanted to remain at ASU and serve as a mentor for the team's other players.

"I will just try to do whatever I can and just become a better person," Dyer said at the press conference.

It actually makes me ashamed this kid broke Bo's freshman record.

Anyone know how to get permanent marker off of a football?

A belt sander will not only remove the marker from the football, it will even remove any evidence that there ever was a football.

Transcript anywhere?  I don't have the patience to try to understand muffled audio of a conversation between Opie and Tyrone.

Nope, had to watch it twice to get some of it.  Apparently the cop offered to hold the gun and the weed, meet up with Dyer later on to give back to him, but only after he talked to Gus first.

Funny, he lectured him about throwing away his career when he was essentially doing the same thing.

What doesn't make sense to me is apparently this happened in March?

Malzahn had that press conference like a week ago to officially announce that Dyer wasn't going to seek another transfer and would be playing for the Red Wolves.

So what the fuck happened between then and now?

He's not obligated to arrest him for that stuff, but if he gave him back anything that was illegal, ie the weed or a gun he didn't legally possess, then he would have been in big trouble.   I guess he was going to let Gus handle it "in house" and the video got out.  It will probably cost him at least a suspension, if not his job.

Oh, and more disappointment from Gus.  He's likely known about this since March when it happened, and chose not to dismiss Dyer until it became public.     Gus at least knows that winning isn't just important, it's the only thing that matters.

I don't know. I think that sometimes coaches just hold out hope for a young man that they recruited and has so much promise. Yes, he might help the team win, but I know these coaches build a bond that goes deeper than that.

When they have to let one of these kids go, you can see the pain of failure in the coaches eyes. That would be the worst part of coaching to me.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I agree completely.  To a point.  When you've been mixed up in owning a gun that was used in a robbery, and other various issues he clearly had, there comes a point you have to cut ties, and move on.  I know Dyer didn't actually provide the gun in the robbery, or he'd have been charged, but he knew they wanted to use it and didn't take steps to stop it, or prevent them from getting the gun.  That's bad shit right there.

There were likely other issues as well.

Then we get to this, and if Gus just found out about this when it was made public, then I have no beef with it, but if he's known since March, and only acted on it when it became public, then he's lost all respect in my eyes.
