« on: May 21, 2012, 04:25:27 PM »
Leaving aside the obvious choices like the Kardashians or Paris Hilton there are some people I just don't understand being considered a "star"

1) Jon Hamm - Bland and boring.  He sucks in everything I've seen him in.  Granted I don't watch Mad Men, but if that's his only role?

2) Michael Fassbender - I usually think he's Jon Hamm.

3) Kristen Stewart - Not that hot, acts about as well as a house plant, has no charisma, has no presence and seems to be in a state of perpetual sulleness about everything.  Add the dude vampire from Twilight to this, too.  He's useless and ugly.

She is nice to look at.....sometimes, but yes she sucks.

How about the entire cast of Jersey Shore?  Then again he said "obvious" choices.

Agree with the first two.

Pattinson was cheezy in Twilight(s) but I liked him in Water for Elephants.  Can't blame the guy for riding the Tweenbopper money train all the way to the bank.

Anybody you think fits this category?

Well, they aren't 'actors' in the same sense but I'd add:

Stephen Colbert

Jon Stewart

Bill Maher
(Although given a choice between watching Real Time or Mike Huckabee's show...I'd watch Bill Maher without hesitation.)

Michael Moore
(I must admit that 'Canadian Bacon' is one of the wittiest satires I've seen but his other work is absolute leftist drivel.)

and you might as well add any number of lunatic, activist celebrities; most of whom can't create a complete sentence without a script or teleprompter:

Matt Damon

Susan Sarandon

Tim Robbins

Sean Penn

Barbra Streisand

Demi Moore

Ashton Kutcher

Ben Affleck

and on and on and on...

Matt Damon

Don't disagree with most of the rest of your list.  All highly overvalued and not nearly as clever as they presume to be.  The exception might be Colbert who isn't as smugly assholish as Stewart.

Damon, though?  When he leaves his politics at the door his body of work is really pretty good.

The Bourne movies are  good. He was good in Oceans 11, 12 and 13.  He played a quality role in The Departed.

When he doesn't leave his politics at the door the movies suck:  Green Zone, etc.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Agree with all but Damon (although I think he is a total tool). Affleck is hugely overrated as an Actor. Better as a writer.  Streisand is overrated as a singer. Her voice is elevator music. Ive always thought this. Rolling Stone and other publications apparently agreed as she was voted MOST OVERRATED. Sean Penn? Fuck that commie cocksucker. What performance by him can you seriously call great? Nothing.

Conan and Fallon are ok. I like Leno personally but dont find him too funny. Letterman? Bleh.

What is with this Matt Damon/ Ben Affleck love fest?  I am surprised.  Their work is dreck in my non-humble opinion.  I reckon when it comes to Damon that opinions are like asses; everybody has one.

And, I wasn't adding Streisand to the list due to her singing (which, by the way, is also dreck); read some of her political ramblings sometimes.  It is as if a kindergartener wrote it; it might as well be written in crayon.  She is an idiot.

Bruce Willis is an actor that I actually like but after reading this I wonder if there's a coherent thought in his head:
Quote
"Yeah, Romney. He's just such a disappointment, an embarrassment," Willis told the magazine.

"Chin up, hair up. He's just one of those guys, one of those guys who says he's going to change everything and he'll get in there, and they'll smile at him and introduce themselves: 'We're Congress, we make sure nothing changes,'" Willis went on.

"He won't do it. He can't. Everybody wants to be Barack Obama. And what did he change?"

Willis, who openly supported George H.W. Bush against Bill Clinton in 1992 and President George W. Bush in 2000 said he doesn't know who will win in November, adding, "I don't really care."

Hollywood idiot.

I somewhat see Willis' point but am still a bit disappointed. Yes, he is usually pretty conservative for Hollywood.

Damon is a good actor in the traditional sense, when he wants to be.

With Streisand, I was just going along with the title of the thread. Why is she so famous? I have no clue because I think her body of work is vastly overrated. Her political opinions just make her even worse. At least Damon has some acting talent. I tend to give the entertainers that have some talent a little more slack on opinions. Take a Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Elton John, John Mellencamp - much more talent in their field IMHO than say, Sean Penn or Tim Robbins. I really loathe Sean Penn.

Streisand is an amazing singer...you don't have to like her music to know that...but I never listen to her talk.
Sean Penn...self righteous liberal douchebag...one hell of an actor.

The problem with most of these people is that they think because they are famous, their opinion should count more.

Movie stars- make movies. Entertain me. I do not give one single fuck about your opinions.

Singers- Sing. Entertain me. I do not give one single fuck about your opinions.

Why is this concept so hard?
