North Carolina Bans Same-Sex Marriage

North Carolina Bans Same-Sex Marriage
« on: May 08, 2012, 10:25:27 PM »
I was just in Cashiers, NC last weekend.  They had signs EVERYWHERE saying that gay marriage is for fags.

Not sure how this will affect politics in the future, but I do know one thing.  The youth do not care about gay marriage, and in my youthful opinion, the government should have nothing to do with any kind of marriage.

Quote
Updated at 9:38pm ET North Carolina voters Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution which limits marriage to traditional one man-one woman marriages.
With half the precincts reporting, the amendment was winning in a landslide, with 60 percent of the vote.
One noteworthy pattern was that some majority black counties which had strongly backed President Obama in 2008 just as strongly supported the proposed amendment on Tuesday.
For example, Hertford County, with a 60 percent black population, voted for Obama with 70 percent in 2008 and on Tuesday 70 percent of its voters backed the constitutional amendment defining marriage. The amendment says: “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.” In effect, it would bar the state from giving legal recognition to civil unions between same-sex couples.
Related: Is Obama's gay marriage stance all about suburban voters?
Under North Carolina law, same-sex marriages are already banned.
And opponents of the constitutional amendment did not make the argument that defeating it was a prelude to changing the law so that same-sex couples could legally marry in North Carolina.
“This is not a conversation about a possible change of law down the road,” said Paul Guequierre, a spokesperson for the Coalition to Protect All North Carolina Families, the main group rallying opposition to the amendment, on Monday.
By approving the amendment, North Carolina joins 28 other states that have state constitutional provisions limit marriage to man-woman unions.
On Monday Peter Sprigg, the senior fellow for policy studies at the conservative Family Research Council in Washington said, “Marriage remains an essential social institution which unites men and women to provide for the reproduction of the human race and to provide mothers and fathers for children. We trust that the voters of North Carolina will recognize and protect this vital public purpose of marriage."
But President Barack Obama had opposed the amendment. "While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples," Cameron French, Obama's North Carolina campaign spokesman, said in March.
A Gallup Poll released Tuesday showed the American people split on the same-sex marriage question: 50 percent think marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized by the law as valid, but 48 percent think they should not be recognized as legal. Among Democrats, 65 percent say same-sex marriages should be recognized by the law as valid, but among only about one in five Republicans hold that view. Among independents, 57 percent think sex marriages should be legally recognized.
Thirty-eight states have prohibitions of same-sex marriage in their laws. Six states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriages.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I think so.  But this won't affect that because Obama is against being for the opposition to banning anyone that oppresses marriage that may or may not be a heterosexual that has a sexual attraction to homosexuals.

I wonder who put up signs with that kind of wording?  The organizations that I am aware of that were state-wide proponents of the amendment would never use that kind of wording e.g. "VoteforMarriageNC" and "Billy Graham Evangelistic Association".

This whole issue in my opinion is a distraction that the left exploits and the right is glad to oblige.

Kind of like the people that the left planted at Tea Party rallies to yell racial terms so that they could say tea partiers were racist?

I was being unserious.

The signs were plentiful, but truthfully they all said "Vote for Marriage" and "Vote for Sanctity of Marriage."  That kind of thing.

Understood.

I know that there were plentiful signs all across the state; I was just in Charlotte myself.  I'm just a little disappointed in my native state focusing on this red meat issue with all of the other more important issues out there and a 9.9% unemployment rate statewide.  The one positive aspect of this issue is that it draws out the voters who would otherwise be lukewarm about supporting Romney.

I understand that the Bible says marriage is between a man and a woman. But personally, it's none of my business who sticks their dick in who, and it's none of the government's business either. I mean, who am I to tell Kaos that he can't be as happy with another man as I am with my wife? If God hates gays, then that's their problem. Not mine. Let them do their thing. The problem is the American people, as a whole, are nuts and all of the politicians want to keep their jobs. That's why it isn't legal IMO.

Of course, we all know I'm just holding out hope for man-goat marriages to become legal.

Gay marriage is the new abortion.

I don't think the government should be involved in marriage at all.  If gay marriage is given government benefits, why should polygamy, bisexuals, and incestuous relationships be denied those same benefits?

Sorry I posted my comment before Obama's evolution was complete.

I do wonder what caused him to devolve as he had the same type of statements towards gay marriage in 1996.

Well, other than my personal belief that incestuous relationships are totally wrong and gross, inbreeding gets you people like Birmingham and Prowler. That can cause real medical problems, so at least there is something scientific there to back up my position on that. I think two dudes going at it is totally gross too, but they're not going to cause somebody else problems by doing so.

Incestuous relationships don't have to be sexual.  Also, there are many forms of contraception to prevent pregnancy.  And there's always abortion.

That's true.

Like I said, I think all of it is gross. I don't personally agree with any of it. But I don't think I, nor the government, have the right to tell somebody who they can and can't marry based simply on what the Bible says.

For me it has nothing to do with religion. That's a nice cop out for atheists and pro gay marriage people to hark on. Its an easy thing to blame.

And yes, you are right on the second point. Where do we limit it? I saw a stat that say most pro gay marriage people also oppose polygamy, incest, fucking goats, etc - all other kinds of relationships. Where does it end? Do we take an all or none approach? Should we let mormons who want to marry 5 wives? Why not right? If RWS wants to marry his goat, who am I to stop him. Right?

Thanks for clearing that up.

My understanding was that he was for it when he was in the Illinois General Assembly, then he was against it when he ran for US Congress, then he was against it when he ran for US President, then he wasn't sure after he became president, then he finally 'came-out' for it yesterday.

Of course who are we kidding?  The Pharaoh was always for it.
