Former Auburn RB Mike Dyer testifies his gun was used in alleged robbery

By Evan Woodbery/Auburn Bureau, The Birmingham News, Press-Register, and The Huntsville Times

OPELIKA, Alabama -- Former Auburn running back Mike Dyer testified Wednesday that his gun was used in an alleged armed robbery involving four former Auburn players in March 2011.

Dyer was testifying for the state in the trial of Antonio Goodwin, the first of the four defendants to go before a jury. But the tone of his interactions with the prosecutors was contentious. He was twice admonished by Lee County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Hughes only to answer the question that was asked and not volunteer additional information.

Dyer, Auburn's leading rusher in 2010 and 2011 and the BCS national championship game MVP, has since transferred to Arkansas State.

Dyer testified that he met with Goodwin and co-defendants Dakota Mosley and Shaun Kitchens at a party at DeAngelo Benton's house the night of the alleged robbery.

The players had gathered to watch a Los Angeles Lakers game and were drinking beer and smoking "spice," a name for synthetic marijuana that was legal in Alabama until last October.

Dyer testified that the group spoke of "hitting a lick," slang for committing a robbery. He said Mosley initially approached him for his gun, but Dyer did not give it to him.

"Dakota asked me if I wanted to hit a lick," Dyer said. "I said no."

Dyer said he left and walked to his home in the same Eagles Landing complex, and Goodwin later joined him and retrieved the gun.

"I tried to advise him (Goodwin) that he shouldn't go," Dyer said. "He wasn't like that."

Dyer tried to continue, but assistant district attorney Kenny Gibbs cut him off, leading Dyer to say angrily, "I'm answering your question."

Goodwin, Mosley and Kitchens left Benton's home as a group, according to testimony, and traveled to Copper Beech apartments in north Auburn, where they met up with McNeil, the fourth defendant.

Former Auburn player Neiko Thorpe, who shared a home with McNeil at Copper Beech, said the group of four met upstairs in the apartment. Thorpe said all four men appeared intoxicated and that he saw an object that looked like a gun and heard talk of a "trailer."

Police allege that the men subsequently robbed residents of a manufactured home off of Wire Road at gunpoint.

Questions about "spice," and its widespread use by players, was the subject of much of Wednesday's testimony. Prosecutors frequently objected, but Hughes allowed defense attorney Lauryn Lauderdale some leeway in asking questions.

Benton testified that Goodwin vomited all over his toilet and bathroom in the night in question. He wrote in a police statement that he had seen the three defendants at his home pop an unknown pill, but in testimony he said he didn't recall that happening.

Benton said he bought his spice at a store, as it was still legal, and that he had experienced hallucinations and felt paranoid while smoking it.

Dyer testified that he smoked spice "consistently" during his Auburn career, and that he found it "way stronger" than regular marijuana.

"With marijuana, you could be high and be OK, just hungry," Dyer said.

Dyer said using spice impaired his decision-making and caused him to be late for meetings at times.

Dyer said he arrived back in Auburn on Sunday and been sitting in a room at the courthouse waiting to testify since Monday. He did not seem thrilled when the judge informed him that he could be recalled to testify later and thus could not return home.

During breaks, Dyer had leaned back, laughed and sighed loudly on the stand. As he walked out of the courtroom, he clicked his fingers and swung his arms by his side.

McNeil, Kitchens and Mosley are scheduled for trial on the June 11 court docket.

Damn shame that Malzahn has to put up with his ass now. The kid is sounding more and more like Maurice Clarrett.

He doesn't have to put up with him if he doesn't let him on the team.  Calls Malzahn's decision making and judgement in to question.

I agree. I guess a lot of those rumors were true that kept lingering regarding Dyer.

My anger stems from the fact that Bama fans were aware of most of this and spread rumors consistently.  It's now out there on the record.

We clearly have moles within our program.

Conversely when there is a rumor regarding a UA player it is quickly quashed, often with the direct help of state media outlets.  How many times have we heard a rumor -- Landon Collins for instance -- only to have the state media leap in, explain how it's all cool and bury the story before it gains traction.

They have no moles.  Nobody is outing them.  We need somebody behind the lines.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

What's Pawwwwwwl got to say today?

Gonna go like this:

"So.  Anyone wondering why Gene Chizik was given a subpoena for this case?  Michael Dyer - the MVP of the Auburn University Tigers's first national championship in 50 or 60 or however long it's been years - has testified that it was his gun that the felony four used in their armed robbery of a couple of college students in an Auburn trailer.  Can't say that's surprising.  What might be surprising to you - and perhaps someone in Indianapolis or Bristol - is that Dyer was participating in spring drills just after this took place.  And now Chizik is being called in to testify about his role in this embarrassing story for the Auburn program.  You know, just when you thought things couldn't get worse or more out of control on the plains.  Legend, you're on first."
