Side Note:  HUGE props to GF for the new avatar.  The man gots mad skillz, yo.  So far I've been Terry Bowden, Alan from The Hangover and Danny Noonan.  Kudos, sir.

You forgot Wesman and my personal favorite Wesus (my Lord and Saviour).

<---this one sucks but the idea was funny

Damn, I sure did.  Mea culpa.

For the record, the correct pronunciation is: Way-zeus.

And that one is my favorite as well.

Also remember that you may be using today's metrics to judge a show from 1960.
I thought that's what we were doing, when you say something like:

What does this all mean? TV shows today SUCK for the most part if middle of the pack shows from way back are better.

And I'm not saying you can't, just explaining why it might not appeal to you as much. Meaning the brand of comedy. It's not going to be nearly as aggressive as say, East Bound or even Sunny in Philly. I could see where it would seem boring to many now, but at the time it wasn't. Again, comparing it to other shows around it at the time does it the most justice. It was a man amongst boys in 1961.

I can agree with that, because in my opinion, all TV from that time sucked major donkey cocks. None of it can be considered remotely entertaining to me.

Which is the complete opposite of:

I feel like we're actually in a Golden Age of television that started with the Soprano's. TV shows for the most part did used to all suck, and they're far, far better now. The sitcom format is and always has been campy and terrible (with few exceptions like Seinfield and Married With Children). Of course, the 90's are my nostalgia period, so maybe that has something to do with me still thinking those are funny.

Let me rephrase: Most mainstream network sitcoms suck today. How I Met Your Mother, Two Half Men, Big Bang and most of the other - all terrible to me. I even hated That 70's Show. I do find the others on the cable channels more entertaining - Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, etc. From the 90's,  Friends was decent slapstick, as good as you can expect from slapstick I guess. I didn't dig Seinfeld much but I do appreciate it. I agree with Kaos on Frazier. Two shows I always liked were Wings and News Radio.

Hated hated hated Home Improvement. Its the epitomy of the type of sitcom I despise. I had a respect for Roseanne because it pushed the envelope on certain things that were maybe taboo, but jumped the shark with the whole Lottery/Dan Dying/Its all a dream angle.

I feel like we're actually in a Golden Age of television...

Mainstream Prime Time television sucks worse than ever today for an abundance of obvious reasons.  There might be a handful of shows worth watching when you have absolutely nothing better to do, but I find myself spending the majority of my TV time on the History channels, Discovery, Science, some of the news and business channels and Sports, especially The Ocho.  Seriously, 90+% of the crap coming out of Hollyweird isn't worth a shit.

I can't watch a full episode of Andy Griffith without falling asleep.

Give me American Horror Story, Eastbound & Down, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, and at least a dozen other shows currently on the air a thousand times before an episode of Andy Griffith.

Wes is right. Nostalgia is kinder than time.

I think one thing you have to take into account with us "older" guys is that when Andy Griffith, Beverly Hillbillies etc. were on, that was all that was on.  We only had NBC, ABC, CBS and PBS.  You lived for those shows then and had little to compare them with.  Came at a time when the most "potty mouth" humor you could find was on Dean Martin's variety show or Johnny Carson.  It just didn't exist for the most part.  Now, a lot of shows have gone so far over the top with cussing a sexual references, they just look like they're trying too hard and stop being funny.  Now you know the Snags, I loves me some dirty jokes and women's naughty parts.  I'm just saying today it seems like most sitcoms and other shows try to be filthy because they think that's the only thing that sells.

May be lame to some but I've gotten into 2 1/2 Men reruns and laugh my ass off.  Yeah, it's all about sex and funny as hell.  But I laugh just as hard every time I see Deputy Barney P. try to recite the Preamble to the Constitution.

BLASPHEMY

Andy Griffith  is one of the greatest shows in the history of television. Yes it's simpler.  We don't have to see Andy's ass as he walks through the kitchen.  There are no steamy scenes of Miss Ellie's foot rubbing Andy's back as the two writhe in carnal bliss. There's no profanity, no homoerotic undertones, no evil scheming, no leering innuendo.  Good and bad is pretty clearly defined.

Almost every episode (and there are some clunkers, but they're few and far between) illustrates a solid moral principle, one we'd all be better if we followed. It's not biblical, per se, but it does provide great insight on the human condition.

As ridiculous as it sounds I aspire to be the father and man that Andy illustrated. I want to believe in my kids as much as he did when Opie met Mr. McBeevy, I want to be as wise as he was when he had Opie raise the baby birds, and be strong enough to teach my kids that sometimes you have to stand up for your rights even in the face of long odds -- or a bully.  I want to be as compassionate as he is toward people who don't deserve it -- The Darlings, Ben Weaver or Ernest T. -- and as loyal as he is toward his friends, who also don't deserve it - Barney. I want to be as patient as he is with the crass stupidity of people in general (like Floyd). I hope to elevate myself by elevating those around me.  And I'd like to possess his honesty and sense of fairness.

When you're ranking the greatest shows in television history, Andy is right near the top.  The Andy before color, before Deputy huh yeah, before Emmit, before Howard and before RFD that is.

I don't know, Kaos.  There were some pretty steamy episodes of the Andy Griffith Show.  Like the time the butter and egg man was supposedly calling on Aunt Bea.  She buttered him up, and he egged her on...
Don't get me started on the Fun Girls from Mt. Pilot, or the time the escaped cons had Barney held hostage.
