Another Emmitt Smith clone at the Crapstone.

Quote
INDIANAPOLIS -- How good is former Alabama running back Trent Richardson?

"I think he's got more skills than Emmitt Smith had," NFL Network draft analyst Gil Brandt said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

For many years, Brandt was a highly regarded executive with the Dallas Cowboys. Smith starred for the Cowboys during a Pro Football Hall of Fame career and is the NFL's all-time leading rusher (18,355 yards).

Richardson has been compared to Smith frequently, because they both went to Escambia High School in Pensacola, Fla.

"I think he's faster than Emmitt, I think he's probably stronger than Emmitt," Brandt said. "I don't think anybody will ever have a better offensive line than Emmitt."

Richardson is expected to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft in April.

"He's going to be a really good running back in the NFL," Brandt said. "This guy can block, he can catch. He's a complete player."

In this video, see and hear more from Brandt talking about Richardson.

Yeah, Emmitt's great OL with Dallas really helped him almost capture the Heisman at UF. Idiot.

I think Rent will be a big time back in teh NFL's.  Hard to argue that he doesn't have all the tools.  But, I'll still take a wait and see stance on him because he supposedly was running behind one of the better lines in college football too.  At least that's what we were told.  So, I think you have to hold off until you see what kind of situation he's drafted into in the NFL and will he have the luxury of running behind a veteran O-line...or have to scratch and claw for everything.  To be fair, I thought the same about Cam to an extent.  I was still hesitant about how he would fair in the NFL because I believed then and still believe he was running/passing behind one of the best and most experienced lines in college football.

I think he will be a good back in the NFL.  Neither him nor Ewok were worthy of a Heisman, but if anything he was more deserving than Ewok.

Guess who Ewok voted for when Cam won the Heisman.   Anyone? Bueller?

I agree that Rent is the better back.  Just depends on what situation he lands in.  Example...I think Jonathon Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are both big time backs.  Easily capable of putting up big time numbers with most teams.  However, they were running behind supreme suckage with Carolina and both were getting hammered at the line on every carry.  To their credit, the line started playing better late in the year and consequently, they started breaking off nice runs.  But early on, it was a 1/2 yard and cloud of astro turf.

I love it.  Put him on the pedestal so high that he will never be able to meet expectations and look like a failure.  The exact opposite of what they did to Cam of course.

Big time, big money, high draft RBs are becoming rare.  It's been proven you can win in the NFL with 2 or3 serviceable backs that each play a role.   And, you can get 3 cheaper than one Heisman winner, and chances are greater than not, the Heisman back career life will be less than 4 years.  Most backs can't take the pounding of 25 carries a game in the NFL, and thus, their value is diminished.  Trent will probably go high, but under the right circumstances, he could fall out of the top 10.

Which is why it makes me sad that Emmmmmmmitt has the rushing record.  Don't get me wrong Emmitt was a great RB and kudos to him, however he was no Walter Peyton or Barry Sanders.

I would give it a 99% chance that record never gets broken.

Yeah,

We Disagree.

Signed,

Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson, Ahrian Foster, Michael Turner, Maurice Jones Drew, Frank Gore...

Chris Johnson has had one season out of 4 where he avg'd more than 20 carries a game.  Averaged 16 in 2011

Adrian Peterson: 1 season out of 5 over 20 per game, last season 17 per game.

Arian Foster: 21 and 20 carries last 2 seasons, only played in 6 games, year 1, lets see how long he lasts.

Michael Turner:   Averaged 20+ carries 2 of the last 4 seasons, played sparingly in his first 4 years in the league

Frank Gore: has never had a season where he averaged 20 or more carries a game.  Avg 16 per for his career.

Maurice Jones Drew:  averaged 21 attempts per game last 2 seasons, averaged 16 per game for his career.

I said "most can't", you picked 6 of 32 starting RBs in the league.

I said 25 a game.  That was probably high, so lets go with 20 per game.

Emmit Smith played 15 seasons, and averaged 20-24 carries a game for half of those years.  Averaged 19.5 for his career.

Walter Payton averaged 20 carries a game for his career.  Only 4 of those years did he average under 20 per game.

Earl Campbell averaged 19 per for the career, cut drastically by his final 2 seasons in New Orleans.  Avg'd about 22 per game with the Oilers.

The difference in averaging 16-17 carries per game vs 20-22 per game may not seem that significant viewed that way, but it's  15-20 percent fewer carries, and that's for the bigger more durable backs you cited, and only 6 out of the whole league.

RBs have less value in today's game.  RBs have the shortest careers on average in the NFL, a big up front investment is risky.  Many organizations have decided they can use cheaper talent to get it done.    In most of the mock drafts I've seen, Rent is the ONLY RB projected in the first round.

These two were some serious bad mofos. I loved watching Payton almost as much as watching Bo.

Agree.

But he also proves that in the NFL,  Durability > Talent. McGahee, Gore and Peterson can't stay healthy for more than 12 months. Same with Felix Jones, who has track speed. All that talent and we'll never really see it all.

Love watching old highlights of Peyton and Sayers. Friggin acrobats. And I consider Sanders to be the best all time. Yes better than overrated Jim Brown.

I said I loved watching Sayers. He was great.

I just think Sanders is the total package for a RB.

Bo was a freak athlete that played RB.
Herschel, Brown and Campbell were tough. And could make you pay a hard price.
Emmitt was durable as anyone.
Sayers and Payton were practically gymnasts.

Pound for pound and based on how shitty the lions were when Barry was there I would say he wins hands down.

How about Darren McFadden, I thought dude would tear up the NFL.  He can't stay healthy to produce.  He was 10x better then Rent.  Teams..OL...it all makes such a huge difference.

Take Cam...as amazing as he is...he has some talent in Carolina.  Steve Smith is an amazing WR and team leader, and they have some good RB's.  Carolina's biggest problem is their defense.

Agree. He never had anything more than a mediocre OL. Can you imagine what he would have done with Emmitt or Payton's OL??

Also figure in what he did at Okie Lite. Almost 3000 yards in 10-11 games. Not sure that record will ever be approached.
