Literacy...who needs it
« on: January 24, 2012, 04:43:49 PM »
Ok, so my wife is back in school to get a degree in nursing. One of her classes is some good old fashioned ENG 101. Late last night she was telling me about some peer editing shit they're doing with their essays. There is some good shit in here. Here is an example from one student:

Quote
Reading and writing I hate it hate it hate it hate it. You might be wondering why I hate it so

Much? Well there are plenty of reasons on why I hate but something that might surprise you is that

at one point in life I loved it. Yes me just like every other little kid I use to love to read and write

but what can I say things change. But in order for you to understand I got to take u back to the

beginning when reading and writing first came a pest my life.

It all started around middle school in about 6th grade.  Stories I had to write for class began to

have to longer and books began to get thicker. The teachers would have the class read books and

chapters daily and I hated that. What was so bad about reading is the chapters of books weren’t

as they once were they began to be almost twenty pages! I never ever wanted to go home and

have to read for homework because I already knew most likely I wouldn’t do it.

The writing assignments were ever more of a pain because no more was they anything you

wanted to talk about they all had to be about a certain topic. The problem with that was it was

hard to even think of something to write because of that topic. Teachers also began to add limit

to how long a sentence of a paragraph had to be even a word limit. Then when I got in 8th grade

we had to write something almost every month because we was going to have to a statewide

writing test which I passed pretty easily by the way. But even with all that I still loved to read

and write it wasn’t until high school that I started to hate it.

When high school rolled around I had way too much on my mind and reading and writing was

not a part of it. By this time girls was my main focus and football took up most of my time so

basically I didn’t have time to do any reading. When it comes to writing in high school I had to

write every single day practicing for the writing test I would have to take an 11th grade an i had

to make sure I past that or I wouldn’t be graduating. I passed the writing test with flying colors

and I thought my writing days was over but I was wrong. I found out I had to write an essay for

My final grade in my English to pass and with me taking 11th grade literature and 12th grade

literature in the same year it was double the trouble so it don’t take a rocket scientist to figure out

how I felt about writing then.

So now I’m no longer in high school and now I’m in college and the very first day I found out

that I will have to write and read just about every week. Once I heard that my mood went from

happy to sad because lord knows i don’t even like to read and write once in a year much less do

it every week. I realize now that I’m basically just going to have to deal with it because in going

to have to do it my whole entire life whether I like it or not. I should also add that I hated writing

the by the way just to further the point that I hate writing. Well here you have it the history of

why I hate reading and writing and it should also tell you why I will hating it in the future.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

I wouldn't believe you except that I was riding in a friend of mine's car and we got broadsided by a landscape truck that ran a stop sign.  Later he got a copy of the other guy's statement and sent it to me. It was literally written like a kindergartner would do, printed with 3" letters, all caps.  It took him two pages to write, "I ran a stop sign and hit the other car."

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

At the Woodstock exit off of 20/59, where I used to have to travel frequently, there as a hand painted sign for a year or more, just placed beside the road at the top of the exit.  It was hand painted in black paint with writing that looked about 3rd grade level on a piece of metal roofing.  It read: "Medal Roofs" followed by a local phone number.

Several years ago, a guy here in PC advertised his business in the same manner; a hand painted piece of 1/4" plywood nailed to s tree in his yard that read "Lawn More Repare and Sail". Folks swore by him like he was the fricking Dr Sanjay Gupta of internal combustion engines.

For those of us with some edjamacashun, it's hard to fathom just how ignorant/uneducated/stupid a good percentage of the world around us is if we don't have reason to interact with them beyond having them fix our cars/house, or ring up our six packs.  I routinely see people write "I was settin there" or see things "for sell".

The text message short hand is only making things worse.  "ur" made it's way into a report last week.

Yep.  Lots of standard words in our language today were bastardizations of other words.  Text and the internet are accelerating that type process today.  The English language as we know it today, is deteriorating at an alarming pace.

You are soooo correct. I hear kids even talking like that some, its so fucking annoying.

As a matter of fact, I think my wife told me she did an edit on another essay that some girl spelled "you" as "u" in her paper.
