If you're implying that I am a deep snapper, then.......  oh, nevermind - you were refering to the shrivelies in my purse, the two bits next to the dollars,  the iddy-bitties near my compact, etc.

(and by the way, that boy is thick like the Sunday paper)

Quote
Josh Harris enjoyed one incredible journey during his Auburn University football career.

And just when he thought the amazing ride had come to an end, the Carrollton High School product discovered his future career and the use of that Political Science degree may have to be put on hold for a while — because the NFL will likely be calling here shortly.

As the No. 1-rated long snapper in this year’s NFL Draft, Harris, a 2007 CHS graduate, was invited to play in the 2012 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which is the nation’s premier, pre-draft college all-star game. Harris will serve as the long snapper for the South squad this Saturday — kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. (EST), airing on the NFL Network — and be coached by Mike Shanahan and the staff of the Washington Redskins. Harris also received an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis.

It’s a rather surreal feeling for the former walk-on who never intended to pursue football past the high school level upon graduating from Carrollton, where he played linebacker and defensive end for the Trojans in addition to his snapping duties.

“To be honest with you, I never really thought I would ever have this opportunity to play at the next level. Obviously, as a kid, if you play football or any sport, you always dream of being a professional football player or professional baseball player. Really, just to see it kind of unfolding where I have a legitimate opportunity to play in the NFL, it seems unreal. I never really thought I’d be in this place. It’s just such an incredible opportunity. I just can’t wait to give it a shot,” Harris said.

Harris only recently began to consider the NFL a realistic career option after receiving the invitation to the Senior Bowl — where every player on the 2011 roster made an NFL team, including 83 players that were selected in the NFL Draft, 12 of which were first-round picks — and then to the Combine.

Though long snappers typically don’t find their way to the NFL via the draft — there hasn’t been a long snapper taken in the past two drafts and only 14 since 1982 — most are signed as undrafted free agents. The prospect of the latter happening is something that’s really grown on Harris during the past few months.

“I didn’t really know where I stood in comparison with some of the other snappers, because I didn’t really know how they grade them or anything like that. I was just focused on doing my job at Auburn and making sure I had a good last season. When I started getting invites to those kind of games and to the actual NFL Combine, it kind of hit that, ‘Man, I might have a chance at this,’” Harris said.

And it’s been somewhat of a whirlwind since that time. Harris played his final game as a Tiger in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31, 2011 — a 43-24 victory over Virginia at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta — just one year after delivering the game-winning snap in Auburn’s 22-19 national championship win over Oregon.

So now with professional ambitions, Harris came to the realization that he needed to hire an agent. It proved to be another ordeal he never imagined himself ever going through.

“That was kind of a crazy experience. Much like having the opportunity to play, I never thought I’d be in a position to hire an agent. I don’t know. That just seems very foreign to me. But it’s been a really cool experience, though,” said Harris, who is represented by Brooks Henderson of the Boston-based International Sports Advisors.

Carrollton football head coach Rayvan Teague said Harris’ story is one that illustrates what determination can do for a person, as well as the value of an unheralded and often overlooked position like a snapper.

“I’m just really proud of Josh. You know, there’s a young man that, you know, I never doubted his ability. I told Furman University back when he was coming out the week of our last practice, I said, ‘If you sign him, he’ll be at least a three or four-year starter for you at linebacker.’ I said, ‘He’s going to make a player. He can’t miss.’ They opted not to,” Teague recalled.

Harris drew some looks from the likes of Furman, Samford, West Georgia and Birmingham Southern coming out of high school, none of which really clicked for either party.

“Actually, no. You know, I was set on going to Auburn. That was the only place I even applied to go to school. That’s where I wanted to be,” Harris said.

Originally planning on hanging up his pads, focusing on his studies and living the college life, Harris decided not to let his football dreams die after all.

A three-sport performer at CHS, Harris credited a former Trojan assistant for nudging him toward a tryout.

Jason Galt, who was the Trojans’ quarterbacks coach at the time, encouraged Harris to give the walk-on route a shot at Auburn. Galt, now the head football coach at Dutchtown High School in Hampton, was a former walk-on himself at the University of Georgia, so he knew quite a bit about the process.

Even so, Harris wasn’t exactly sold on the idea of being just a snapper.

“At the end of my senior season, [Galt] was like, ‘Hey, Josh, I’ve seen a lot of people try to snap and I really think you could do it in college. If I were you, I would definitely give it a shot wherever you go to try to walk on and just be a snapper,’” Harris said. “You know, at first, I thought it was crazy. I was like, ‘I don’t want to be a long snapper. You know, I want to play a real position. I want to play defensive end or linebacker.’ But [Galt] kind of kept asking me about it and I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to give it a shot.’”

On the first day of classes his freshman year, Harris attended walk-on tryouts — one of roughly 120 hopefuls that showed up — and he wound up being one of two players selected.

From there, Harris morphed from an unknown, unrecruited walk-on to eventually being put on scholarship, becoming a starter and ultimately snapping a perfect strike to holder Neil Caudle for Wes Byrum’s 19-yard field goal as time expired in the 2011 BCS National Championship game in Glendale, Ariz., capping off a 14-0 campaign for the Tigers last January.

“So what a success story,” Teague said. “You know, he’s a bright young man. A great family. And I think he’ll have a lengthy career in the NFL.”

Harris, who graduated from Auburn in December, noted that seeing his college career come to an end was somewhat bittersweet. Of course, looking back on it, he wouldn’t change a thing.

“Auburn has been such a special place. Not only in my time I’ve spent as a student and an athlete there, but also just growing up a huge Auburn fan. And now knowing that my time there is coming to an end, obviously, it was a little emotional. But the fact that I got to experience that and fulfill a childhood dream of mine was just unreal. It’s just been a really spectacular ride,” Harris said.

Born into an Auburn family — his mother, Lori, graduated from Auburn and his late grandfather, Dr. James W. Morrow, Jr., was actually a freshman on the Tigers’ 1957 national championship squad — Harris said it’s been a blessing to have his family be such an integral part of his success and dream.

“For me to have my family and friends’ support that I’ve had during my career, it’s really just unbelievable. It really means a lot to me. When I sit down and talk with my family, I really see how much joy they’ve had in just seeing me do this. I know that they’re really proud of me and I know that without them, I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this stuff,” Harris said.

So as Harris prepares for his final collegiate game this week in Mobile alongside plenty of other NFL hopefuls, he fully intends to soak up every moment and continue living out that childhood dream.

“When I found out [about the Senior Bowl], I was really, really excited. You know, that’s just such a huge honor. That’s the premier college all-star game. You know, there’s a lot of them, but the Senior Bowl has been held as the highest-regarded one. All 32 NFL teams are going to be there. To have that opportunity to be invited to that and showcase your skills in front of all the teams, I mean, there’s really not a better atmosphere to do that. I’m just really excited to go down there and just to have the opportunity,” Harris said.

“I just can’t believe I’m in this position now after, basically, having to be talked into walking on and now it just seems like yesterday I was walking on. But to now have this opportunity, it’s incredible.”

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
