I really think Joe Pa's biggest flaw in the situation is being too trusting of the chain of command. It is easy to backseat drive the whole thing, but he really believed he was doing the right thing by running it up the chain and trusting they would actually do their jobs AND the right thing by dealing with it appropriately with the police. THAT did not happen and JoePa was left with egg on his face.

Okay my problem with that.  Is it not the coaches responsibility to hire and fire coordinators? Did Gene not just go out and hire our two coordinators...and will he not be judged on the quality of those hires.   If Sandusky had been a poor coordinator would Paterno have called the upstairs brass and and asked if he should fire him?  That was Paterno's boy...he should have handled it

My dad had a rule  "One 'awe shit' wipes out a thousand 'attaboys'."  Joe's awe shit moment was pretty huge.  There are good people that fuck up enormously all the time, and that's what people remember, whether it's right or wrong.   I sort of buy in to K's theory too...easy to judge from afar, can't know what you'd do in another's shoes until you're there.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

I honestly think he grew up in a world where that shit just didn't happen. When it did with Sandusky, Joe Pa didn't know what the fuck to do. It hit him like a ton of bricks. So he defered to the people that he did trust to know what to do. If anything, he was almost ignorant on how to handle such a pervert. Does he carry a little blame and maybe some liability? Maybe. But I don't think Joe Pa was malicious. It was a mistake but nothing I think was in malice. He should still be viewed for the things he did before this happened that were good. He was a good man. This HUGE ignorant mistake should not define him as a whole. He did a lot of good in this world.

A pretty good article by one of my favorite writers:

Flying the players to Philly is an NCAA violation.  Just saying...
