Maplesville 47 Pickens County 26
If the Pickens County Tornadoes had one wish, it would be to replay the second quarter of their pivotal region matchup on the road Friday night against the Maplesville Red Devils. The second quarter meltdown helped Maplesville seize a 47-26 win and gain a stranglehold on the top spot in 1A Region 4.
The Tornadoes led 19-14 after the first quarter but completely imploded in the second. Four uncharacteristic turnovers led to 26 unanswered points and an insurmountable obstacle. Pickens County was also penalized for 125 yards in the first half, most coming in the second quarter.
By the time the second quarter breakdown was complete, Maplesville turned the five-point deficit into a 21-point lead. The Devils held on to hand the Tornadoes their first loss of the season.
It went like this:
> Touchdown
> Onsides kick recovery, touchdown
> Fumbled kickoff recovered by M'ville. 45 yards of penalties on PC on drive. Touchdown
> Fumbled punt, touchdown on last play of the half.
Kind of like how LSU got over on Oregon. Or LSU on us. Just got away. Maplesville still probably a better team, but I would have said Brantley was better too and PC beat them last week at Brantley. They have a habit of booting a good team in the playoffs but then falling short of the title game.
Beat Hazlewood when they had been on some 60-year string of titles, beat Leroy in 2009 when they had a 17-game playoff win streak. Never played in the Super Six, though. Semi finals three or maybe four times I think. Never got there.
