Thoughts - Week 10

Thoughts - Week 10
« on: November 06, 2011, 08:51:35 AM »
The Game of the Century...

- Let's be honest.  If you weren't an LSU or Alabama fan, that was game was boring.

- None of the quarterbacks were on the same level as their teammates.  And honestly?  To be hyperbolic?  That game would have been very similar to an NFL game if the quarterbacks had a lick of talent.

- Alabama owned the field much better than LSU did, but LSU's defensive playmakers won the marbles.  Marquis Maze lobs the ball to a wide open 6'7 tight end who leaps high in the air, snatches the ball, and brings it down.  Except the much smaller LSU defensive back put his own hands on the ball and wrestled it from his monstrous hands before falling to the ground.

- The LSU secondary is legendary.  That's what I'm going with.  They made numerous plays through the air, but their ability to take out the freight train Trent Richardson was what impressed me the most.  Towards the end of the game, Alabama in their own stadium has the chance to drive down to kick a game winning field goal, and the LSU defender who probably weighs 40 pounds less and certainly bench presses a few hundred pounds less hits Trent in the back field for a six yard loss.  All by himself.

That was impressive.

- But no, this game was not all that exciting for sidewalk viewers.  I wonder how the Alabama fans that spent thousands of dollars on tickets felt?

Worship Jesus Instead!

- My Facebook has been dominated by three different types of people:

1.  The Alabama fan that is either upset or congratulatory to LSU about the game.  Most of them were congratulatory.
2.  The non-LSU or non-Alabama fan that is making fun of the ridiculous amount of hype that went into this slugfest of a boring game.
3.  The person that wants you to know that you're wasting your time worshiping football and should worship Jesus instead.

- Sure there are a few fringe people who literally live or die by the game.  But most people understand that it's just a competition.  It's mostly friendly.  Justice should be served when it's due.  It's fun to celebrate a win.  It's even fun to analyze and discuss and complain about a loss.  It's just football.  It's what we post about on Facebook when the game is going on.  It's what we discuss on message boards when we have a few minutes of spare time.  It's what people like to read about in the paper.  It's knowing how to give and receive from rival fans as long as they know it's coming their way too.  And it can all go away at the drop of a hat, and most all of us would be just fine.

- Christianity says nothing about ignoring everything you enjoy.  In fact, there's plenty to show that while doing God's will, one should enjoy the blessings he gives you.

- So to you high and mighty wet blankets that take the time to lecture football fans with a Facebook wall post, analyze your own life.  Because whatever it is that you do for enjoyment (unless it's read the bible every second of the day.  that'd be a different issue I think), it's no different than what most football fans do for enjoyment.

The Rematch...

- Why?  I heard Marcus Allen on SportsSouth or whatever channel the Oregon game was on say that Alabama should drop no lower than #2.  Right where they are.

- Why?  They lost.  That's how the polls work.  Teams that win move up no matter what happened in their game.  Teams that lose move down.  That's how they've always worked.  But suddenly - because of the media hype for the game of the century - some want to give Alabama a different treatment.

- Look.  I agree.  I agree that Alabama is most definitely the #2 team in the country.  They would ass-kick every other team in the top ten, and if the voters were spending their weeks analyzing every team that played to see what ranking each one deserves, I'd be all for Alabama being #2 and maybe having a rematch.

- But again, that's not how the polls work.  The polls seem to be more tournament based.  You lose?  You're knocked out of the tournament.  Hopefully other teams get knocked out if you want to move up and regain your spot.

- Another thought - Alabama lost AT HOME.  What makes you think a rematch at a neutral location would be better?  What was it about Alabama's team that made you think we aren't sure if LSU's team is better?  Because it went to overtime?  LSU dominated overtime.

- Meanwhile, Oklahoma State is 9-0 with one game left to get through.  Will it be tough to beat Oklahoma?  Sure.

- But if you try to keep other teams out of the BCS championship simply because you're enamored with Nick Saban and Alabama's defense, then I think your vote should be revoked for being a homer.

The Mini-Super Bowl...

- Meanwhile, other football games are to be played.  LSU still has Arkansas - a one loss SEC team - in a few weeks.  Alabama has Miss St and Auburn - both away.  Oh, and South Carolina lost to Arkansas putting Georgia in the SEC championship.

- But not so fast my friend!

- Georgia can't lose another SEC game unless Florida somehow manages to up-end South Carolina.  USCe should be favored especially since they're playing at home.

- Georgia has two SEC games left - Auburn and Kentucky.

- Auburn has had a respectable season.  The fact that our losses have been blowouts have hurt and damaged our reputation, but nonetheless, our losses came to two top ten teams including the top team and a one loss Clemson team.

- Auburn's chance for a New Year's Day bowl game is still alive.  And our chance to have a serious party this weekend is definitely alive.

- Let me preface my excitement with this: I hate Georgia.  I hate their stadium that sells burnt bagel bites to the visiting section for seven dollars.  I hate their fans who attempted to spank me and my friends as we exited our car right after parking.  I hate their stupid, caveman-like barking when you walk by them wearing an Auburn shirt.  I hate their douchebag fans that kick you while you're trying to take a piss at halftime.  I hate their thug players who dance in the middle of the game.  I hate their student sections who for some reason surround the visiting section and throw shit the entire game.

- I don't know why Georgia fans acted the way they did when I went to the game in 2007, but it really tarnished the way I look at them.  I'm sure there are some great Georgia fans who are good people, but my experience there was a nightmare.  So I have no qualms in knocking Georgia out of the SEC championship game and sending Mark Richt packing.

- Don't groan yet.  I don't have a gut feeling.  The football gods smote me with the LSU game.  I have no clue if we can win.  I just know I want to.

- I just know that winning this game is huge for Auburn's season.  Georgia is a rival.  We're trying to get a truly respectable victory on our schedule.  We're trying to get a great bowl game.  We can knock our rival out of the championship game.

- This is our Game of the Century.  I really hope the team prepares like it is.

Final Thought...

- The season is definitely not over.  LSU and Alabama are both beatable.  If you can somehow get into a passing-attack-shootout, I think you can beat them both.  I don't know if anyone this season is capable of doing it, but by no means are two teams that lack a downfield passing game the greatest of all time.

I actually enjoyed the BEST GAME EVER TO BE PLAYED last night.  Maybe it was because I got to say "WIDE RIGHT" in my best Bobby Bowden voice a few times along the way.

I learned 2 things last night though about Alabama:
1.  Marquis Maze is a punk.  I have never done this before in my life, but I actually caught myself hoping he broke his mouth when he hobbled off the field.
2.  Much like the junior high school bully, if you hit them in the mouth, they aren't quite sure what to do.  They are so used to teams cowering down at their defensive domination that they don't know really how to react when someone stands up to them.

I also learned one thing last night about Auburn:
The defense has a LOOOOOONG way to go to get to the level of either team that took the field last night.  Well...maybe I didn't JUST learn that, but it was definitely reinforced in my head.

I don't get where you came away feeling that Alabama owned the field.  LSU came in confident, and ready to play, and not the least bit scared.  Miles was prepared for a low scoring affair, Saban was scared of it.  I called my bud early in the first Q, and told him, LSU wasn't the least bit afraid of bammer, and that I was pretty sure Saban was worried going in.  Evidence his chasing points with long FG attempts early.  Would the game have been any different if he'd played field position?  Fact is, probably not.  Without a major letdown above them bammer has played the championship game and lost...on their home field no less, and with all the build up.  They don't deserve another shot.  Not even close to deserving it.  Had the interception call been monumentally bad, there'd MAYBE be an argument.  It wasn't...the bammer guy didn't control the ball until he was down by contact.  The ball never touched the ground and the defender had it uncontested at the end.

It seemed like Alabama did a good job driving down field until they got around the 30-35 yard line.  Then LSU's defense stepped up.

LSU's offense looked pretty pathetic all game.  From Jarrett Lee's two interceptions to Spencer Ware getting shut down, LSU really didn't have much going for it on offense.

McCarron put up 199 yards passing along with Trent's 89 yards rushing.  You'd think that would have been enough to win considering LSU had 230 yards total for the game.

LSU made the plays that counted though.

Tis football, and I NEVER for a minute thought either team completely took control, but felt all along Saban was playing/coaching scared, while LSU/Miles was completely confident in their game plan.  Bias?  Maybe, but I really don't think so.

I don't understand how Saban was chasing points, but Miles was confident in his game plan.  LSU didn't score a touchdown either.  Every time Miles was in FG range, he kicked the ball.  What's the difference?

If you're in FG range, you kick FGs.  It's not like Bama was missing 60 yard FGs on 4th and 1.  All were obvious kicking situations, and if Bama had a kicker who was better than average, they walk away with a low scoring victory.

That's just it.  Saban and his Kicker weren't in range.  He knew it.  Better to have punted and played to his strength IMHO.  And it's just an opinion.  Try it once?  Yeah, I get that.  Twice?  Maybe.  Trot out your short range guy from nearly 50 for try number 3?  Desperate.  Saban was playing "if I get 10 points first I win".  Miles was playing "I'll take a 3-0 win and go home".  Similar approaches, yet very different in execution of the plan.  As I said...opinion...and possibly one looking through orange and blue glasses.

Finally, I said all along, that if McBrodie wasn't up to the task, LSU wins.  I think Saban knew he wasn't going in.   Had he played LSU's/Miles plan, it may have ended in a 0-0 tie.

Bad personnel decision with Maze fielding the punt hobbled...it flipped the field.

Fucking fans throughout the south laughed at Dooley when he "got confused and couldn't count to 11" and lost to LSU...what will they say about Saban having 12 men in the huddle in OT where 5 yards was precious and there was no confusion or clock pressure?  Nothing probably, he's a God...it was someone else's mistake.    What will they say about the next play where the QB needed to only not take a sack, yet...?  If it's anybody but Saban, Finebaum and the jackass chorus are talking about how "he got out-coached".  Saban?  We shall see.

Foster hit a 46 yard FG in the 3rd with plenty of distance.  He is streaky, but 45-50 is well within his range.  And I do think Saban should have punted instead of trying the 50+ with the other kicker, but if he felt confident that his defense was going to hold (and they did) then so be it.

I don't think that Saban was out coached, his guys just didn't make the plays.  His offense had more yards.  His quarterback had the better game.  His running back had the better game.  His defense shut down Ware and Randle.  What more could be asked?

The bottom line is LSU is a damn good football team, and they made the plays when they needed too.

This.

I thought the play calling was actually pretty good. Alot of new wrinkles that we hadn't seen before. I didn't really see anything glaring that made me say "FUCK why did that play get called?" I think the lack of execution is what stuck out the most. Whether it was AJ missing some wide open guys (this has been an issue all season), WRs not having field presence, etc, there were alot of mental mistakes made. Alabama lost focus.

As far as the field goals go, all of them except arguably one were obvious kickng situations. Foster has had no problem in the past hitting a 50 yard FG for that matter. He flat out choked last night. Except for maybe that one, the others were within his range.

"he's had no problems in the past hitting 50 yard FGs"....maybe you should go back and check his stats.

'10
7-9 FG (long of 49)

'11
2-6 FG (long of 46)

So no, they were not in his range...except for the one he hit (that was within)...50 yards+ is out of range for Cade Foster. The kicker didn't choke, the OC & the HC were the ones that choked. (Either call plays that have been working to get within the kicker's range or get a delay of game then punt.

So, 4th and 20 on the opponents 33 yard line, you're not going to kick a field goal? (50 yard attempt)

4th and 7 on the opponents 27, you're not going to kick a field goal? (44 yard attempt)

4th and 17 on the opponent's 31, you're not going to kick a field goal? (49 yard attempt) -- Don't really have a problem with them giving Shelley a shot on this one. Foster had a mental roadblock IMO, and at least they tried something else.

It's a matter of field position. On the above three attempts, you're inside the 35 yard line. You've got a guy who has kicked a long of 49 before (holy shit, I was off by 1 whole yard!), so I would say 45-50 yards is within range. In a game like that, against a defense like LSU's, you're putting your team in a bad position if you're asking them to go for it on 4th and 17 and 4th and 20. AJ is going to force a play and end up with an INT or something, then it is a momentum swing. Safe call is to kick the field goal, and maybe you get lucky and come out with some points. Worse case scenario (hypothetically in an Alabama fan's eyes), LSU is going to get the ball like you punted from your own 30. Your defense is playing pretty good, and you're confident in them.

What are you going to do, punt when you're inside the 35? Fuck no, you're going to kick a field goal.

Percentages.  It's about playing the odds.  Your long FG guy was 1 of 3 coming in.  Compare that to the percentages of LSU getting an 80 yard or longer TD drive.  Their longest drive of the night was 74 yds, starting inside their 5, and ending the half with nothing.   IMO, it wasn't smart, but then again, none of the ensuing drives resulted in points for LSU.  However, it may have resulted in better field position for bammer on the next drive.  Monumentally stupid?  No, but it may have factored in to the overall end result.

I notice nobody is defending having Maize out there hobbled to field a punt, causing a complete flip in field position.

Nobody defending the OT 12 men in the huddle either.  THAT was huge.

McBrodie taking a sack  in OT was huge.

The 44 & 46 yarders? Yes. The others (not counting the OT try, really didn't have a choice there)? No, because they were out of his and Shelley's range.  You get a delay of game penalty & punt the ball (aim for inside the 20 yardline) when you're out of your kicker's range & your defense is very strong. You flip the field & try again, after your defense makes them go 3 and out.

It's a great idea, unless the punt gets blocked, or the snap sails over the punter's head, etc. Same type of shit that JR complains about when fans complain about playcalling. Smart if it works, stupid if it doesn't. If they did what you had suggested and something went wrong, you would say they were morons for doing it, because that's what angle you've decided to take. You're simply fishing for something that isn't there so you can say "HAW HAW LOOK DEM DERE BAMMER COACHES DEY STEWPID HAR HAW HAR!!!!!!!@#"

Bottom line, with the flow of that particular game, and given the circumstances, and also factoring in down and distance, no matter what you pick you're between a rock and a hard place. Our punter hasn't been able to pooch a punt all season (hasn't really had to I guess), so you're talking percentages with that as well. I say when you weigh all the options given the situations, FG attempt wins out because with that you at least have a chance of scoring some points. All other choices are going to be pretty much equal as far as end result.

You're a fuckin' dumass. With the way the game was going, the uat defense was shutting down LSU's Offense. Also, there's a higher percentage that the FG try would get blocked than a punt (wait...y'all did have a FG get blocked then returned 20-30 yards). Keep trying, you'll get it eventually.
