Auburn's Mike Dyer wins SEC offensive player of the week award
Published: Monday, October 31, 2011, 9:05 AM
Charles Goldberg/Auburn Bureau, The Birmingham News, Press-Register, and The Huntsville Times

AUBURN, Alabama -- One of Auburn's most dependable players was named the SEC offensive player of the week Monday.

Running back Mike Dyer won the honor after rushing for 177 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's 41-23 win over Ole Miss. The 177 yards is the second highest total in the sophomore's career, falling just short of the 180 Dyer had against the Rebels last season.

Dyer has nine 100-yard games in his career, including four games of more than 150 yards.

Dyer is knocking on the door of his second straight 1,000-yard season. He has 989 yards.

Just like Ben Tate is no Mark Ingram.

Incidentally, Dyer's on pace to crack the Top 10 single season rushing yardage at Auburn.

Notice Tate is at #5 on that list only behind Bo, Caddy, Brooks and Cribbs. Damn.

A little perspective on where we are in the SEC regarding the top rushers.

Trent Richardson 149/989 6.6 17 TDs

Michael Dyer  186/989  5.3  9 TDs

Marcus Lattimore 163/818 5.0  10 TDs

Isiah Crowell 146/689  4.7  4 TDs

If you look at the 1-2 punch of Auburn and Bama

Eddie Lacy 58/465  8.0  5 TDs

Onterrio McProne  84/448  5.3  2 TDs

Obviously , Lattimore has been out the last 2 games and probably would be leading but would also have far more carries.  Dyer has 37 more carries than Richardson for the same number of yards and far less TD's.  I'm not knocking either back here because I think both they're both as good as it gets in this league.  But I do think Dyer has to work harder for his given the line he's running behind.

Lacy and McProne are hard to compare with Lacy being the prototype big back, running downhill while OMac goes 147 soaking wet and needs to get on the corners for any consistent success.

Dyer has a shot at the all time record if he stays all 4 years and goes relatively uninjured.

That's career yards, and he's on pace to break Bo's record.  If he stay's healthy, he'll come close.

Correct. I misread the accompanying article.

He's on pace to finish 10th all-time, after his true sophomore year.

If he stays all 4 years and stays healthy, he could beat Bo.

He already took 1 record from him last year.  You think Bo will go all Gillooly on him if he stays around for his Senior year?

I would have a hard time with this...

I will say though...I was wrong. I don't see how he does it...but he does it. I thought he would struggle this year but dude keeps producing. It is pretty crazy. At the end of the game you look up and he has 150+ yards and you go...damn...how the hell did he get those???

Yep...people said last year his production was a by-product of Cam.   He already has 4 more carries than last season, yet is only off last season's pace by .7 yards per carry, averaging 5.3 ypc.  And has more than doubled his TD production from last year with 9.
