Not like you need me to tell you this, but Jesus yes. What kills me is on alot of plays AU has it covered. They have a man in position to bust up the play. He just misses. Saw it about a hundred times today. It seems like the playcalling is half-ass there, it's just these guys can't tackle. Today was the first game AU has played this season that I really saw, but I was also confused by giving receivers a 10 yard cushion. I know you guys were bitching about it the other week, but I thought it was just here and there. It seemed like EVERY play DBs played very very soft. On the last Clemson drive AU finally started with some press coverage.

I still think AU will be at least an 8 win team this season, though. The defense just can't stay this shitakety the rest of the year. Sometimes when you have alot of kids who haven't lost before, losing that 1st game puts a bad taste in their mouth and they straighten up. Hopefully that is what happens here.

I wished it were the players. That can be fixed with good coaching even playing with subpar talent(which we are not). They simply don't know fundamental football and that's on the coaches. They can't tackle. They don't look back for the ball. They play too soft etc, etc.

The bubble burst today.  It's been coming for a while.  It's too late now to fix it.  The things we are doing poorly can't be fixed in a week.  We're talking an entire philosophy change.  And honestly?  Unless there's a Malzahn-esque defensive guru out there that we can pay $1M or more to sign on, you're looking at a two-year project.  I don't know who that guy is.

IMHO, defense is a shitload easier to fix, if you have a shred of talent.  And we have a little, according to the recruiting services.  It's showing on the offensive side of the ball.   Defense is about gap control, lining up right, doing your job, and mostly about "want to" and "desire".   We play scared and on our heels.  We don't tackle for shit.

No, you really can't overcome a complete lack of talent with coaching.  However, as you said, we are not completely lacking in talent.  It's young, but they're athletic.

Every time I turned around the announcers were saying freshman with the catch, sophomore turns it up etc.

If I read the depth chart correctly their offense had eight freshmen and sophomores on it. 

So the "defense is full of sophomores" shitake doesn't fly when they are playing AGAINST freshman, does it?  Or does it? 

I'm not mad. I'm not upset.  I'm not depressed.  I'm just meh. 

Defense has sucked ass for three years. 

Played well against LSU last year.  LSU had a shitakety offense. 

Played well for a half against Bama (after Bama shitake all over itself in the first half and failed to go ahead 42-0, let's be honest).

Played well against Oregon last year.  Put Oregon in the SEC and they're Ole Miss.  Be real.  Oregon last year would have struggled to score against eight of 12 SEC teams. 

We're three years in.  This is what we are.  The worst defense in the history of Auburn football.  We were able to overcome that last year. 

But we shouldn't have to overcome it week after week.   You give this team merely a middle of the pack defense, an average defense, a defense that chokes up 350 yards and 20 points a game and Auburn would win ten games.  With a little luck, we could win them all again. 

But we're not adequate.  We're not average.  And it's not a matter of talent.  I look out there and see big, fast, strong kids.  I see them out of place.  I see them flying by tackles, diving, throwing shoulders and flailing.  I see them turning their shoulders and opening lanes.  I don't see the quarterback getting sacked.  I don't see us causing turnovers.

We let a team that struggled to move the ball against Wofford gash us for 8,454 yards.  We let a Mississippi State team that managed 18 inches in the second half against LSU run for 5,930.

We don't need it fixed.  That's my point.  We have the worst defense in the history of Auburn football at the same time as having one of the most dangerous, high octane offenses in the history of the NCAA. 

Malzahn has never had a bad season.  I don't expect him to.  And I don't buy that he had a bad game.  I think his game plan was churning along just fine until Clemson started doing whatever they wanted to on offense.  Once it was apparent that our defense was not going to ever stop Clemson, Malzahn had to start throwing down field. 

We don't need a fixed defense.  We just need one that isn't being bowled over every fucking play once the first five minutes has finished. 

Watching this Florida-Tennessee game is making me sick.  The ball's thrown?  Defenders are there to make a hit and drop the guy.  The offensive line creates a big hole and the running back hits it?  He's actually tackled about 6-7 yards down field.

The only big plays are when a player is wide open to run down the field.  Has nothing to do with how many fucking tackles he breaks. 

And these two teams aren't supposed to be very good. 

Our defense is unwatchable.  The naysayers were right.  Nick Fairley made our defense go.  Josh Bynes was the consistent tackler in the middle.  We had some veteran playmakers to clean up the mess when we needed to clean up the mess. 

But now?  Now that we need some legit coaching and legit playcalling of defense?  The worst in the history of Auburn?

We were up 21-7.  That's a two touchdown lead.  That's a comfortable lead.  That's a lead that makes you think if you play your cards just right, you can't lose. 

But Roof decided to throw his cards in the air like confetti. 

21-7.  We've been there before.  We were there last week.  When we got there today, I told my friend, "Don't get too excited.  Clemson will tie it up and then this one will go down to the wire." 

Like usual.  Like clockwork.  Our defense shat the bed.  Gave up 21 straight points.  Started arm tackling.  Started running slow.  Started missing assignments.  Started giving Clemson free yards. 

This time it didn't go down to the wire.  Clemson was all over us.  Gus couldn't keep up.  Maybe Gus is tired.

I'm told (by someone with no reason to really know) that he's heard he's in the dog house for some reason.  I have no idea, but the way they use him so sparingly certainly begs questions.  But here's the thing, if he's in some trouble...you sit his ass.  You don't use him JUST when you need 5 yards for sure.  So, I don't know.  It makes no sense that a guy that averaged nearly 10 yards a carry only got 16 carries.  Take away the 52 yarder, he still has 15 carries for 100 yards. 

The defense sux donkey balls. 

Yes, THS, Malzahn had a bad game.  He did.  His bad game still scores us enough points that an average Def. could hang on to the lead.  And, running the ball would have kept our defense off the field, and opened up the passing game.  But, as I said, he's due a bad game.  Roof's defenses have had 5 careers worth of bad games at Auburn.   Malzahn turns in to a pass happy play caller with running backs like we have, I'll be on his ass too.  I don't think he will.

I'm trying hard to come up with something positive to write this week.  No special team blunders this week, but they didn't do anything to really help the effort greatly either.

A lot of it is youth, but when you have a lot of youth on Defensive plays should be called that takes decisions out of their hands, also I'm not a fan of our CBs playing off the WRs 10 yards.

For everyone that doesn't think Youth and lack of playing experience all over the Defense isn't a huge part of the issue, then y'all need to get a clue...or just go to every message and maybe call into radio shows kicking and screaming, that'll defintely help.

Yes, youth and inexperience factor in.  Youth and inexperience, if they're talented, and half assed coached, can play good D, but will make a mistake or 2 resulting in big plays.

Youth and inexperience, if they're well coached playing with an aggressive philosophy will make some plays here and there, and don't get run through like a sieve over and over and over and over.  They don't miss tackle after tackle.  They don't get pushed around every stinking play.  They don't run down the field covering receivers, never turning to look for the ball, resulting in a ball doinking off your back numbers for what should be a pick.   Defense, well coached defense with a speck of talent is the easiest part of the game to get good at.  Not great, it takes work, coaching and experience to get great, but if you're aggressive, play hard and fast, you can play decent defense with minimal mistakes.  And you can't convince me that we are so lacking in talent that after facing 1 bottom dweller, and 2 teams that would be, at best mid level SEC teams, that we have a defense that after today will likely be the worst in FBS in scoring Defense.  We cannot be that lacking in talent.  That's saying our talent couldn't play defense in the WAC or Mtn West conference.  And, we don't have a single starter that doesn't have at least 1 Varsity Letter, and no Fr. start on Defense.
