Favorite Seafood Dives and/or Bars
« on: May 13, 2008, 03:13:49 PM »
Alright, what's the spot you've got to hit when you go to the beach?  Who has the coldest beer, shrimp po-boy and fries that'll make you slap your mama?  Who shucks the coldest, saltiest oysters?  Coolest sunsets on the beach?  Music?

It must be a dive or a hole in the wall joint or just somewhere that's not a cookie-cutter franchise.

At Bay Point Marriott (Yeah, I know - Franchise) in Panama City, they've got a little bar/grill sitting way out on a pier in the Bay.  Limes.  Been going there for years and taking in a sunset with fried grouper fingers, fries, cold beers and always a guy with a guitar playing good tunes.  All the while, the boats are coming in from the gulf.

Just outside of Seaside on 30-A, between Destin and P.C. there's a dump of a convenience store on the corner. Seagrove Market.  If you walk through to the back, it opens up into a separate, little grill where they'll put a serious shrimp, oyster or grouper po-boy and fries on you.  A couple of Landsharks...okay 3 Landsharks and it's good times.  No scenery, just kick-ass, fried beach food and cold beer.

Anyone?

At the far western end of Destin, just before the bridge to Okaloosa Island, down a little sidestreet named Calhoun (I believe), there is a little shack-like place on a pier called Dewey Destin's - owned and operated by Auburn alums.

The Ark in Riverside has the best fried canned oysters in North Alabama. The pictures of Bobby Allison, Red Farmer, Elvis, and George C Wallace that adorn the wall, along with 40 years worth of nicotine stains, make it the ultimate dive.

Not really a dive but if you must catch the sunset in Panama City Beach, you can do a lot worse than Schooners.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

The boardwalk at Pensacola Beach is always a nice place to hang out, eat, drink, and shop. The bars and restaurants change from time to time, but they are always usually nice places. Though it is a chain, there is a Hooters on the boardwalk where it sits right on the bayside of the beach. Peg Leg Pete's is very good also.

When we go to Orange Beach, we usually drive over to Coconut Willie's in Gulf Shores. There is also a nice restaurant at one of the Wolf Bay marinas, but I can't remember the name of it. It is a two story restaurant.

Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Perdido Key,Fl. all with several miles of each other make that area the best for food ,sunsets and beach fun. I live in Perdido so I'm kind  of biased. Pensacola Beach is a bit touristy for me.

We go down to Pensacola NAS for the Blue Angels Homecoming every November and we used to stay inland at the Red Roof right off I-10. However, this past November, since Orange Beach is where we like to go during summer vacations, we decided to stay at one of the Phoenix condos instead and then drive into Pensacola NAS for the show. We liked doing that much better, so this year we are thinking about staying in Perdido Key and driving over to the show. Like you said, there is much better choices to eat in that area, you have the beach, and during that time of year, there is much less traffiic in the Perdido Key/Orange Beach area then there is in Pensacola during the Blue's homecoming weekend.

THere used to be a place in Panama City Beach called Allen's...it had the best food in PCB..period.  Too bad the owner a few years ago decided to get greedy and burn the bitch down for insurance money...hope he enjpys prison.  I guess I really didn't contribute anything to this conversation. Fuck you guys for getting to go to the beach.

Your exactly right Ranger 12.
When you guys come from OB. you do go through the back gate of NAS right? Off of Blue Angel parkway? If so that's where I live. About 2 miles from the back gate. The Blues fly right over the house every tuesday during practice. I can almost throw a rock and hit them they are so low. Bad ass shit.

It's been a few years since I've been there, but Shuck'ems in Panama City is tough to beat when it comes to raw oysters and cold beer.  It's not a successful trip if someone doesn't hump the camel out front.

Another great place for oysters in PCB is Dusty's.  It was destroyed during Ivan (I think) but it has since been rebuilt.  Good times.
