Check Utah State vs Oklahoma last year (It's nearly the exact same team, except for more experience and a few extra players...nearly all Somoans or Tongans). Utah State isn't World Beaters, by no means, but they're pretty fuckin salty..and we're still wet behind the ears.

It's always easier to correct mistakes in a close win than a loss.

To me, it seemed like the coaching staff thought we could play vanilla offense and defense, use our speed and strength. We need to gel more along the OL.

I say we bow up on defense, go less vanilla and run the offense at a faster pace.. And I think Utah State is better than Memphis for what it's worth. State has to be the favorite but I don't think Relf will throw unopposed as he did in his first outing. I'll stick with Roof until we lose before I'll throw in the towel.

I don't care, it was Utah fuckin' State.  Better than Memphis?  Hoover HS is too.  We got whipped all day in the trenches.  Trotter would be a serviceable QB IF he had protection and a run game.  He has little of either.

Defense?  Hell, I cannot fucking explain it.  3 years of Roof, and it's the same shit.  The only reason that D last year was worth half a shit was Fairley and Clayton in the middle.  You couldn't run between the tackles on us.  Today, they ran straight up Power, right down our throats.  Plus, they beat us constantly on the WR bubbles and screens on the edges and with quick slants.

In reality, I will say this...they went in with little in the game plan, as War Eagle pointed out.  Hell, they only ran the sweep twice.  Why?  Fuck, I don't know, it's not like it's any secret Malzahn has a Buck Sweep in the playbook.  We ran little Jet.  We tried to cram it down their throats with zone, which we should be able to do, and failed.  We can do more to open up the run game, and probably will...we HAVE to.  It's the inability to manhandle a team like that with base stuff that bothers me.  Trotter will improve.  I expect film time for Gus to stop every single pass play to point out the WR with nobody within 10 yards and Trotter holding the fucking ball.  He'll learn.  He learned a bit in this game and improved at the end.   He has a good arm, but is too nervous in the pocket.   BTW, Dyer in the Wildcat is worthless as tits on a bull...he's not even a half assed threat to throw the ball, and that gives up much of the advantage.  We burned Fraizier's RS today, best get him some reps back there.  I think the offense will get better and be ok.

The defense, Christ almighty, the fucking defense!  Roof has got to go!  Tubs killed the Franklin experiment mid-season.  Let Chiz run the D.  Utah fucking State hangs 38, and 448 yards of total offense on us (almost 50/50 run vs pass). Fuck that shit!

3 years of Roof, and it's the same shit.

This is your best sentence and really is the most significant problem with our program.

Our offense can do what it needs to do.  Think about how little time they had to do anything with the ball.  And they still managed to score five touchdowns.

Tackling.  Shedding blocks.  Pursuit angles.  These are all coachable problems, and they've remained problems since Roof arrived.

But of course, this all goes to the higher man on staff - Chizik.  Considering he built his resume with his defensive units at Auburn and Texas, he should know how to remedy this situation.

The coaches burning Frazier's redshirt for a trick play against Utah State before the game was actually in trouble tells me that they definitely plan on playing Frazier a good bit this year.

Why do we insist on not playing man coverage?

Our DBs were 10 yards off the receivers every play.  The quick screens were burning us because we couldn't tackle.

Are we really that inept at covering a receiver that we have to allow 8-12 yards a pop?  Are we just hoping for the other team to make a mistake?  Maybe the receiver will drop it?

This. We have the top recruits at DB in the COUNTRY. Did we recruit them to be the best damn zone DBs EVAR?

Trotter got better as the game went on. I think he likes the no huddle hurry up best. I like that. The future is bright with Tre Mason. Kids go a motor.

Stallworth actually looks like a man among boys. He is fo realz.

Probably our best special teams in a while.

The only thing I noticed that really really sucked on offense was the WRs in a broken play situation. THEY DO NOT MOVE TO THE BALL TO HELP THE QB. Last year it looked like Cam was great when he got flushed from the pocket and completed a pass. Look back, it was usually DA getting free to help him out. It looked like when the QB was in trouble today, the WRs just idled down and said, "Oh well. Guess I wont be getting the ball." If we can fix that, we can hurt some teams. Trotter is not a wet noodle no legged guy. He moves pretty good.

For as much shit as you have talked about AU and recruiting........

 :haha:

You're spinning this as they have Somoans and Tongans, so they're REALLY REALLY good. Is their true frosh QB Somoan as well?

To the decent AU fans: It could have been worse. You guys could have lost and had your own ULM. Alot of teams would have said "fuck it" down 10 points with 3 minutes to go. AU came back and won. That's something to be happy about. Looking at stats, I would trade Phillip Sims for Trotter in a fucking heartbeat. I didn't watch the AU game, so not sure why some are down on Trotter. Stats aren't everything, though I suppose. Your team won, and showed some balls in the end while doing it.

I'm not so sure this is going to be a "great" season for either team, honestly. After the Alabama performance I saw today, the only way Bama makes it to 10 wins is by defense and a miracle.

Todays game. I saw a young team come out today and thinking that since we won it all last year we must be good. Coaches and players alike. I would like to think a lesson was learned. We will know next week.

Win  next week-and I think we will be ok.

Lose  next week> the long season we all saw this weekend.

I figured you'd make the mistake and try to understand levelheaded Auburn fan talk. What the fuck does this have to do with me talking about recruiting? Auburn was more talented than Utah State, Utah State was more experienced than Auburn. (18-19 year old verses 22-23 year olds)...it's really not that hard to figure out, well for you and your type it might be. Utah State is a good team...not World Beaters, make sure you read that again....maybe it'll sink in. USU wasn't going to be intimidated by 80,000+ like so many seemed to think, especially not when they had no trouble running against the Defense (I've stated that Auburn's rush defense isn't going to be good this year, I think I stated around 60th at the end of the season....if no corrections are made it'll be worse.)

Look, I'm just excited to finally figure out why Utah shit-stomped Alabama in '08.

Samoans. Utah teams haz them. I finally have an excuse for that embarassment. Now, I just need to check Louisiana-Monroe's '07 roster. As a matter of fact, I think I need to research some rosters of Alabama's opponents the rest of this year. I need to see what the Samoan-to-white kid ratio is on each team before I guess on how the season will go.

Jesus Christ on ice skates, how do they NOT win the NC every year then? Look what Utah St. did with just a handful of Samoans. Hawaii has a whole army of them. I can't understand how Alabama had a losing season in '06. They were good enough to beat Hawaii. That should have put us in at least the SECCG in principle at that point. Shit, Tulsa and Colorado must have had super-Samoans to beat Hawaii last season.
