Facts and Opinion re: Recordings
by Matt Wyatt

On Wednesday’s edition of Head To Head radio, I divulged having listened to voicemail recordings in the not so recent past of what appears to be Kenny Rogers calling in regards to the recruitment of Cam Newton. The caller seems to say “Mr. Newton” when referring to Cecil.

The information I gave during the Wednesday Head To Head segment is an accurate account of what those recordings included.

It is clear that the recipient of the voicemails, supposedly Bill Bell, was not corresponding because the caller states this, repeats it in different terms, and even says it’s apparent they’ve been instructed to ignore him. This is the source of increasing frustration on the part of the caller.

It is important to note: The caller on these voicemails never mentioned Auburn.

Based on the above information, along with other facts as few as they may be that have surfaced over the last year, I’ve formed the following opinions:

Mississippi State leaders made the right decisions, protected their university and its people, and are to be commended.

If one takes a close look at the timeline of factual events it’s entirely possible that Auburn boosters never handed over large amounts of money to the Newtons, the type amount that Cecil admitted to the NCAA he solicited, which essentially ended Mississippi State’s recruitment of Newton. Maybe a scholarship was available for Newton up until signing day, but it’s rather difficult to recruit someone whose “representatives” including the father have been made off-limits to anyone within or around the program.

Regarding the timeline of events, the SEC office was made aware of the solicitation of money at a time when conversations would have easily followed between league office and Auburn officials. It is entirely possible, that given this “heads-up” at that exact moment, AU officials could have sought out and put a stop to any improper activity going on with a “rogue” booster. It’s possible this is why Auburn officials were and still are confident in their position on the Newton investigation. It’s possible this is why Gene Chizik confronted Julie Roe Lach of the NCAA at the SEC meetings in Destin, FL.

I think the chances of early communications between AU officials and those from the SEC office taking place are great. Despite what some media members have portrayed, I believe Jay Jacobs, athletic director at Auburn, is a great person and excellent leader for Auburn athletics. I do not believe he would ever allow the type things that have been alleged to go on knowingly under his administration.

Conspiracy theorists believe Mike Slive would cover these kinds of things up. I have changed my tune personally over the last year, and I believe Slive would never allow a member institution to commit such a major infraction knowingly after another institution turned over information regarding the recruitment of a particular athlete.

I believe Dan Mullen, Greg Byrne, and now Scott Stricklin at Mississippi State operated in such a way to protect Mississippi State from any wrongdoing that could have resulted. It’s a tremendous credit to those, as well as Bill Bell and John Bond, that communication took place right away, and all those within the program as well as outside the program didn’t place MSU in danger with their actions during the remaining recruitment once “representatives” of the player including the father had made the solicitation. They all are to be commended. They all are owed an apology by some others (some media, some opposing fans) who shot them full of holes when the story began breaking last year.

It seems to me, the inferrence that “Mississippi State is trying to get Auburn” which was completely false caused a lot of bad things to be said about a lot of good people. Additionaly, the inference that “Cecil asked for money from MSU, he must’ve gotten it from Auburn” is very large inferrence and no information seems to have ever been presented to bridge that gap factually. If those facts do surface in the future, then the story will change. Until then, it remains an assumption.

Mississippi State leaders protected their university and its people, that is a fact. Auburn leaders and the SEC commissioner are not crooks and liars as we’ve been made to believe by some, that may be my opinion, but I believe it to also be a fact.

This guy is much more credible than Danny Sheridan if you ask me my humble opinion.   :bar:

Great read! I don't completely agree with the MSU being clean part of it; afterall,  their coaches & boosters were present during the meeting. They are the school involved in the mess. Had it not been their desire to bend the rules to begin with, none of this would have ever happened.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.
