Man charged with attempted murder

PINSON, Ala. -- A Pinson man was charged with attempted murder for holding a gun to his son's head and pulling the trigger in the midst of a tantrum after Alabama's double overtime loss to Arkansas Saturday.

The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Seth Logan, who said he picked the wrong time to ask his dad for a car, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Randy Christian said Monday.

Joseph Alan Logan, 46, surrendered to police Saturday and was charged with attempted murder and domestic violence. He was released from the Jefferson County jail Sunday on $7,500 bond.

"I know we take football serious in the South," Christian told The Birmingham News for a Tuesday story, "but that's crossing the line."

The request upset Joseph Logan because his son has already wrecked several vehicles, Logan told investigators.

"He claimed he was just trying to scare his son," Christian said.

According to the police report, Joseph Logan had been drinking alcohol and began slamming doors, tossing boxes and throwing dishes in the sink after the Crimson Tide lost its football game to Arkansas 34-31 in double overtime Saturday.

While Joseph Logan was throwing the tantrum, Seth Logan asked for a new car.

Joseph Logan then retrieved a 9 mm pistol from his car, grabbed his son by the collar and pressed the gun to his son's forehead, the report said.

Logan threatened to shoot his son in the head, then pulled the trigger.

Seth Logan moved his head just as his father fired and the bullet whizzed past him, the report said.

Seth Logan fled to a neighbor's house to call police. He told police his ear was numb and his head ringing, but he was OK.

Sheriff's authorities called the SWAT team after discovering the armed father still had a 13-year-old son in the house with him.

Okay, since I didn't see the criteria they based it on, I can only guess as to how they came up with it. If it's money and power, #1 is Bama hands down. Highest salary, a fan base that worships the ground Lord Saybinz walks upon and he has NO frickin' buyout. Plus, he has his own personal mouthpiece, Paul Fineslut.

Georgia at #3 is pretty much spot on. You can totally underachieve for 10 years and have job security.

To me its Florida hands down. I think that's a better job than Texas. They have it all. Main thing I disagree with on that list is Auburn and Tennessee. Flip flop them and I agree with it. One could probably argue south carolina and arky too.

Smith retrieved a pistol from his vehicle, and threatened Williams, who armed himself with a shotgun and fired two blasts, striking and killing Dennis Smith, officers said.

Donna Smith then threatened Williams, who shot and killed the woman, they said.

Alcohol was probably involved, if you had to ask. There's not much to add to this terrible, terrible story, matched for grisliness only by the shooting death over a $20 bet between South Carolina and Clemson fans in 2006 or the murder in an argument over high school football in Alabama last summer, except maybe a warning: If you must taunt, please, restrict it to the phone, Internet, office or other well-lit, public locale.

Nathan at Golden Tornado points out this bizarre story:

A fan screaming "Roll Tide" outside a fraternity house led to a violent altercation early Saturday that left seven Auburn students injured, five with stab wounds.
Apparently the guy gets into a fight at the fraternity house, stabs a guy, and takes off. Other students chase him and ends up getting into another fight down the street, where he stabs four more Auburn students. Police don't have a suspect.

OK, I get that it's the Iron Bowl - but it's just a game.

More charges could be filed after a South Carolina man dies after USC's win over Alabama.

20-year-old Allen Gasque was killed when he was accidentally run over after Saturday's game.

Investigators say he got into a fight with 25-year-old Curtis Simms while waiting in traffic.

They say both men were out of their vehicles fighting when Gasque ended up on the ground and the truck he was actually riding in ran him over.

Investigators say the driver of the truck didn't see him, so far he's not been charged.

Simms was arrested after the incident and went before a judge in Columbia Sunday where he was charged with breach of peace.

He's also been ordered to not make any contact with Gasque's friends of family and was given a $10,000 PR bond.

The incident is still under investigation.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- An 62-year-old east Tuscaloosa man who had posted racially offensive signs and has been arrested after authorities say he fired a shotgun twice at a neighbor.

Billy Ray White was arrested Wednesday. The Tuscaloosa County sheriff's office says he's charged with attempted murder and is being held on $50,000 bond. He also has a $1,000 bond set for a reckless endangerment charge and a $15,000 bond for a charge of shooting into an occupied automobile or building.

Neighbor Eddie Eatmon says it's the second time in 3 days that White had drawn a gun. Eatmon said he warned a new neighbor on Wednesday to be careful when passing White's house.

Eatmon says White and the man later had a confrontation, and White got a shotgun, fired but missed. White reportedly terrorized black neighbors and had signs that included the N-word racial epithet and said, "White and proud of it" and "Roll Damn Tide" according to a Tuscaloosa News report.

Two players were arrested in a span of six days, one player has been dismissed and linebacker Prince Hall has been indefinitely suspended.

With spring practice approaching and a top-rated recruiting class recently wrapped up, coach Nick Saban still often finds himself dealing with Bama's bad behavior.

"It's a problem. It is a problem," Saban said Tuesday at a news conference. "Our team needs to have better discipline, judgment. We cannot tolerate poor judgment."

The latest incidents have included the arrest of All-Southeastern Conference safety Rashad Johnson on disorderly conduct charges after he allegedly pushed a security guard to the ground at a bar in the off-campus district called the Strip early last Saturday morning.

Plus, Saban said Tuesday he has kicked freshman defensive tackle Jeremy Elder off the team following his recent arrest for allegedly robbing two other students at gunpoint. He said Hall has been suspended for "violation of team rules and policies related to his behavior" and won't participate in spring practice or the team's offseason program.

Hall has started 13 games over the past two seasons.

"At some point in the future, we'll determine what his future in this program really is," Saban said.

The recent problems were only the latest incidents for the Tide. All told, eight players have been arrested in the nearly 14 months since Saban's hiring, five for disorderly conduct.

He did indicate that Johnson, a team captain, would not face suspension. The arrest of one of the team's stars and leaders was another public black eye on the program, though.

"Regardless of how many people got arrested this week on the Strip, there was only one on ESPN, only one on Fox Sports and only one all over the state of Alabama in every newspaper," Saban said. "The consequences for his behavior and the responsibility that he has and the opportunity that he has is far greater.

"It's the price that we all play to have that opportunity. We cannot continue to have these kinds of issues and problems in the future."

Most of the arrests have stemmed from incidents on or near the Strip. Saban said if the problems continue, he might consider imposing more restrictions on his players. He called Johnson "as fine a person as we have on our football team."

"I've said enough is enough and we're trying to fix it," Saban said. "But Rashad Johnson does not need to get suspended from the team. I'm not saying what he did was right. I'm saying he put himself at risk in a bad situation.

"He has a due process to go through and he is not guilty until he goes through that due process. I think this is America and I think we're allowed to do that even though you all [reporters] have already convicted him of doing something terribly wrong."

Four players arrested before last season on mostly similar charges were not suspended for any games. There were plenty of others forced to sit out for off-the-field behavior.

"We've had 30 games missed by players last year for suspensions," Saban said. "That may be an NCAA record. We're heading in that direction again next year."
