Six Years Behind (X-Box 360)
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:11:51 AM »
I think I'm gonna get one.

As you all well know, I'm not much of a gamer.

I mean, we all know the Wii is vastly superior to any other gaming console out there, but I digress...

I'm finally gonna break down and get a "real" gaming machine.

Here's why.

I'm getting AT&T U-verse in my new house (I just moved in Sunday). You can use them as a TV reciever.

I've got a mancave upstairs, and I can't bring myself to pay the extra $10 a month for a reciever up there. Doubt I'll really spend much time up there. HOWEVER, if I've got teh NCAA 2012s up there, I'll have a reason to hang out up there AND can watch TV up there. Two birds and such.

I am overwhelmed with options, though.

I don't want a total piece of shit that's incompatible with the latest stuff, but I also want to keep it under $200ish. Doubt I'll be much of a bells & whistles guy when it comes to anything besides media player options.

Thoughts? Advise?

Oh, and I'm not above perusing teh eBayz for an older model, provided it meets the criteria above and I can get it for a relative steal.

Go ahead and suck it up buy the more expensive one than the 199.00 one.  It has a tiny hard drive.  You can find some deals on hard drives after the fact if you are willing to hunt for them but it sounds like you want to get it and not worry about it.  If that's the case then spend the extra hundred and get one that 250GB hard drive.
Or hunt teh ebays but understand, a lot of them are going to be reconditioned ones with boards.  not saying they will not work for your purpose but buyer beware.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

This is what I don't understand as a n00b.

1) Why do you want lots of hard drive space. The games are on disk, no?
2) Is there a real danger in getting a reconditioned one if the seller is guaranteeing it's in working condition?

I'd recommend going with the PS3. Much easier network to access and use, games look phenomenal and for same price, and you get all the wireless and memory you need for $229.00 on Amazon with the 160GB unit.

My two cents.

Your gc is on the way, btw. Just got back in town after travel with work.

My original thought was a PS3. I read that about the networking being easier to work with, but I also read it sucks too. Apparently there's filesize limits, so it probably won't play big matroska (.mkv) files.

So the fact that X-Box doubles as a reciever is interesting to me.

However, I noticed that there is apparently a $100 setup fee to get this (which blows), and there's a $55 fee if I have to call them out again after the initial setup (which is scheduled for this Thursday). So I'm going to have to make a quick decision.

Sorry, I disagree with the network being easier to use. XBL is simple.  Games look identical.  And in my mind the blu-ray on the ps3 is shitty, so that's a wash.

Chizad, you want the hard drive for save games, and downloads.  Say you buy Call of Duty, and want to spend $10 for an additional map.  Stored on the Hard Drive.

And to answer your second question, yes.  I had a launch 360 that worked for 2 years before it got the RRoD.  Called MS, they sent me a working 360.  And since MS by this time had HDMI output built in standard, the the one they sent me didn't have the HDMI jack, I knew it was refurbished.  This new one works great, haven't had an issue.  But I know it wasn't sent to me "brand new."

Word.  I have both and agree completely.

You need to treat this just like you do memory for a computer.  The first thing you say is "I'll never need that much room". The last thing you are saying is " I can't believe I'm out of room".

Add to this that xbox will support a number of formats that PS3 does not.

All that for nothing.

I went by GameStop and they have one of the newer 250GB WiFi models.

However, it turns out you do have to pay the $100 for the U-Verse "Kit", which no matter how you slice it has got to be a rip off. I could pay $7 a month for a real-deal reciever, or I can pay you $100 up front to use my own hardware? How you figure? It would take 15 months to even make that worth it...That's a stupid business model on their part, IMO.

Guess I'll stick to my Wii for now.

PS3 doubles as a BluRay (and DVD) player which is a good thing.

Also get Netflix, Pandora etc.  thru PS3 which I like.

Plus if you get a PS3 there is the remote possibility that I can whip your ass in NCAA 12 or some other game online.

I've only ever played any of you people online once and that was when Chop 1.5 (I think it was the old version) completed a 80-something yard pass on the last play of the game to win by two.  So I'm due.

Everything you mentioned can be done on the Xbox...except blu ray.  Also, X-Box live doesn't shit out or get hacked and go down for months.

That's a pretty big "except"

And you can add "yet" after the word "months"
