Anyone ever been?

I kept hearing how fantastic these islands are.  So...I went.

Color me unimpressed.  Unless you are a world champion shell collector, or love coarse sand/shell bits and murky water, there is no reason to visit.

They have done a great job of preserving their natural areas and limiting development, but for superior beaches and entertainment, hit the panhandle of Florida.

This reminds me: we need a travel forum.  Make it so.

Yeah...  I've been there a few times.  It's as you describe which still makes it one of the better places to visit in the US.  It's more for families...  No real bar or party scene to speak of...  What did you think about the the food and accommodations?

Next stop for me is Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands...  This will be my 5th time there.

I found the food to be rather uninspired.  There seemed to be no emphasis on fresh seafood, despite this being fertile fishing ground.  I ordered a seafood frittata for breakfast and it came with frozen scallops and Krab.  Meh.

The accommodations were pretty nice.  We stayed at the Mariott Sanibel Harbor (just on the east end of the causeway).

Nice.  Would love to do some island hopping.

I figured I'd just buy a couple islands.  You know... trade in the premium forum subscriptions and rip into some island development and start a fine cigar company.  Really step it up a bit.

Hold me...

Actually, I found a 3/4 acre island in the Bahamas a few years ago.  It included a small beach, a dock and two small homes.  It was only $300k at the time.  I just don't trust the Bahamian gubme't enough to make that large of a purchase over there.
