Today on Finebaum....
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:05:20 PM »
Early on, some marble-mouthed clown called in and started bashing Alabama because they've never had a black quarterback in the NFL or one who started an entire season.

Finebaum bristled (I think the guy was a plant designed to direct the pace of the show) of course and threw out Walter Lewis as the alpha and omega of that discussion.  Black quarterback, started, was a Heisman contender.   Lewis closed the discussion. Period.  Besides they have a black basketball coach.  Duh.

Of course five minutes later, some inbred redneck fuck invoked the name 'Bahr Bryunt' and mentioned how he wanted to sign him a black quarterback and woulda 'cept for George Wallace....

Side note:  I've made a game of it lately.  How long does it take for somebody to mention Bryant on any given day.  So far the longest the show has gone is about ten minutes.

I sort of agreed that it wasn't that big a deal, nobody really cared, this was 2011 and they would play whoever but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered if Finebaum's little plant didn't have more substance than anybody realized.

Is one guy 28 years ago really the answer to that question?  Does Walter Lewis absolve Alabama from everything forever?

Dameyune Craig, Pat Washington, Jason Campbell, Reggie Slack, Cam Newton, Rohan Davey, Jordan Jefferson, Jamarcus Russell, Chris Leak, Tee Martin, Quincy Carter....

How many of those guys have national titles?  Campbell, Newton, Russell, Leak, Martin....

One guy at Alabama 28 years ago puts paid to all that?

Thought about it.  Nothing is more important at Alabama than football.  Nothing.  Not academics, not research, nothing.  Football is everything.

The starting quarterback is essentially the face of the "university" (and I use that term loosely).  The starting quarterback is the most recognizable image of the school.

Dude was right.  They don't want that face to be black.  Not now, not ever.

Just a quick note on your Bahr Bryant game....I did the same thing with Lord Saybinz last year everytime I left work and got in the car.  I think I made it 2 minutes one day...then I realized it was a commercial.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "Guys don't mind hitting Michael Vick in the open field, but when you see Cam, you have to think about how you're going to tackle him. He's like a big tight end coming at you."

Excellent post, K.  I heard the beginning segment as well, and it seemed like Finebaum spent the next 45 minutes squashing that topic into the garbage can.

You really think Finebaum planted that topic?  I don't think so.  I think he was caught off guard.  And from what I heard, if Finebaum did plant the topic, he only did so in order to present an argument to make Alabama look better.

I thought it was a lead-in for Jim of Tuscaloosa to solve the mystery of the caller's motivation.

Didn't Zow start a whole season?  Or was he always splitting time with Watts?  He was a decent QB, no pro prospect, but a better QB than Barker had been.

Zow had to share with Tyler Watts and the Tyler Watts who came before Tyler Watts.

Well considering that bama was the last school in the whole fucking United States to let a black person into their school I'm not too surprised in your assessment K. Truth is, there are too many white supremacist still alive who bleed bama. What surprises me even more is how any black man who has knowledge of this can justify being a bama fan.

The reality is that the typical Bama sidewalk alumni is nothing but the last vestige of the 1960's Klan.

Think about it.

Bear Bryant and Alabama (along with Johnnny Vaught and Ole Miss) were a prime reason that the Old Southerners hung on as long as they did.

Bahr and Johnny V was whuppin' the sheyat outta them damn Yankee schools and they didn't need no GOT dam neegrahs to do it, neither.

If you were a Klansman you told your inbred, fucked up redneck kids they were to worship at the Bryant altar, cause he wasn't nothin but a FUCKIN' WINNER, Jethro!  He showed them fuckin' yankee bastards what was what.  The Klansmen once-removed kids told their filthy little spawn the same.  And the cycle perpetuates.

It's why the ignorant and unwashed still cling to their fucking houndstooth pacifiers today.  Bama fans are essentially klansmen.

ROE TAHD!!

Good thing that Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, Marcell Dareus, Dont'a Hightower, Rolando McClain, etc are/were relatively anonymous and unimportant players in recent history. JPW and McElroy were MUCH more relative to Alabama's success in the past 3 years than any of those guys.

What was funny about that particular segment, was Finebaum smarmily stated matter-of-factly that he was "an Aub".

The conversation started with "Paul, What do Alabama State, UAB, and Auburn have in common?" Finebaum sounded giddy expecting some slam about Auburn's irrelevance as an athletic program. But then when he hit him with that, that was the last he mentioned Auburn. Finebaum retorted with "C'mon, they have a black basketball coach", and he said something along the lines of "He's a Token. Just like the one they've got down there at Auburn, he's a Token too."

Does not sound like "an Aub" to me.

I would say he's most likely an alumnus of ASU or UAB and could give a shit about the Auburn/Alabama rivalry. I know that's comletely foreign to Finebaum, but it does happen in this state.

Beyond that, I would say it's a safer bet that he was an Alabama fan pissed that the school he roots for never has black QBs, and he would like to root for one.

IMO, the least likely of the three, especially after what he said that about what "they" got down at Auburn, in reference to Barbee.

A national championship is a wonderful thing, but if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it.

While K might possibly have gotten carried away, and I do think this is not a relatively big deal, you know that that's different.

None of them were "running the show". The QB position is a "thinking man's position". Some racist fans don't think a black man can handle that.

True story. I know a huge Bama fan, from Talladega, who is about as redneck as anyone I associate myself with. I stayed with him for a race weekend to see what it was all about, and his other huge Bama fan friend got into an argument with me about (N-words) running things. He didn't believe they were capable. The conversation started in regards for his disgust that one was about to be the President of the United States at the time. He pointed to Sly Croom as more supportive evidence. I pretty much just  'ed and ignored him after that.
