Langford plans to buy burlap sacks as part of plan to fight crime in city
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Mayor Larry Langford has a new plan to change the city.

Build a canal connecting Five Points West to Uncle Miltie's Racecourse and Gamblatorium? Use horses from the freshly funded equestrian center to pull mass-transit gondolas across town?

Nah. Those plans still have a few kinks. This time, Langford wants to reduce crime. With burlap sacks. Really.
I just know I've heard this story before. It seems so ... familiar.

It reminds me of being 11 years old and gullible as a "do-something" voter. It was a cold, rainy camping trip, and the veteran Boy Scouts took us little guys on something called a "snipe hunt."

You know how it works:

Give a trusting dope a burlap sack and send him into the woods. Tell him to squat in the dark in silence, until the "snipe chasers" come beating the bushes to drive the coveted birds right into the bag. Just close the sack and the snipe is yours.

Remain still and silent, or you'll mess it up for everybody.

Of course the chasers go back to the campfire and laugh. The inexperienced among us sit still in the dark until the realization dawns that there's another name for this activity:

A wild goose chase.

Yuck, yuck. And now Langford wants to change the city with burlap sacks. And ash.

We're chasing geese again.

Langford on Tuesday spoke of plans to buy 2,000 burlap sacks for the city. There's no word yet on how much they will cost, although bag suppliers sell them in bulk for as little as 67 cents each or as much as $2. A little bond swap would make short work of that.

Langford wants to use the sacks in a citywide prayer service designed to reduce crime. They are to be worn and handed out by clergy because sackcloth and ashes are mentioned time and again in the Bible, where the humble, grief-stricken and repentant put on such sacks, smudge their faces and pray.

I just don't know if it's wise to go all Old Testament on crime. I guess it's good Langford didn't focus on Psalm 137, where happiness comes from dashing the heads of enemy babies against rocks. And lucky for him he didn't pick out Leviticus 24, where God tells Moses to "bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and ... let all the congregation stone him."

But Langford - who has cursed a few times outside his own camp - certainly doesn't mind mixing his theology with politics.

"If you don't want to pray, fine," he has said, responding to claims he blurs the line between church and state. "Just keep your evil self away from me because it's hard enough dealing with Christians anyway."

We've got to quit our sniping, I guess. Or get back in the hunt. You know the deal.

Remain still and silent, or we'll mess it up for everybody.

That bird is almost in the bag.

I tell you, though, seeing an ashen-faced Langford in a burlap bag would be worth it all. This is the guy with the fashion fetish, you know, the man who told SEC lawyers he owed 70 grand because he was "a clothes person."

Maybe Remon's Clothiers downtown can whip him up a three-piece burlap suit.

Stop it Arch...you're killing me.

Finally there is a member of the local media trying his best to out Langford for what he really is, a dim who only wants to spend all of our money for what will either make him happy or make him look good.  Bonus points for both.

At least the County will not be alone in the poor house, the City will be there soon enough with us.

Oh, that's a real positive, encouraging, and uplifting thing to say to get Christians to join the citywide prayer service.

I can't say that I have heard of a more rediculous plan to reduce crime.

This guy must be a complete buffoon.  Does he realize that?!  I guess not.

At least you have one column worth reading...The Atlanta Urinal and Constipation is absolutely worthless over here...used to be good for the occasional Lewis Grizzard piece but now it is worthy only of fishwrap.

Yesterday the front page of the AJC had pictures of McCain, the Hildebeast, and Obama above a question that they had asked General Petraeus...and beside each picture was a picture of Gen. Petraeus with what was supposed to be his answer to each question.  My Democrat co-worker pointed out to me that the answers made no sense and said to me "this general ought to be a politician since he's said nothing to answer these questions."

I looked at the front page myself and pointed out to him that the normally perfect AJC has placed the wrong answers beside each question...it was obvious...of course the AJC will print a correction statement in two weeks which will appear on page D18.

They have the most leftist staff this side of San Francisco...

Your coworker should be horsewhipped for questioning anything that General Petraeus has to say or how he says it.  Even Obama, Hildabeast, and the rest of the democratic party figured that one out from the last time they had him "reporting" when they attempted to run him down.

I guess that I "stand corrected" on when the Urinal would print a correction; here's what the AJC posted on their website regarding this issue:

Quote
CORRECTIONS

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 04/10/08

> A graphic on Wednesday's front page mismatched the answers given by Gen. David Petraeus to questions posed by the presidential candidates about Iraq. Here are the questions and answers as they should have appeared:

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "What conditions would have to exist for you to recommend to the president that the current strategy is not working?"

Petraeus: "It's not a mathematical exercise. There's not an equation in which you have co-efficients in front of each of these factors. ... It really involves commanders sitting down ... and assessing where it is that you can reduce your forces."

Sen. Barack Obama: "At what point do we say [al-Qaida in Iraq] cannot reconstitute themselves or are we saying that they're not going to be particularly effective and the Iraqis, themselves, will be able to handle the situation?"

Petraeus: "If you can keep chipping away at them, chipping away at their leadership, chipping away at their resources, that comprehensive approach ... we are reaching that in some areas already."

Sen. John McCain: "What's the lesson that we're to draw from that, that 1,000 Iraqi army and police deserted or underperformed" in the recent assaults on militia strongholds in Basra?

Petraeus: "The ... lesson is a recurring one, and that is the difficulty of local police operating in areas where there is serious intimidation of themselves and their families."

My co-worker is probably like 90 percent of the AJC readers who took this front page article as being correct as printed (e.g. question Gen. Petraeus rather than question the vaunted AJC's news authority).  Anything to make Petraeus (and the Bush Administration) look bad.

And, yes, my coworker should be horsewhipped for that assumption.

Well, I mean first of all he is a crook.  Second, How much worse can Birmingham get?  I mean I guess he could build a moat around the city of Birmingham and make an "Escape from NY" type situation...but I think that might be an improvement.

I reiterate that this is just about the stupidest thing I've seen to fight crime; I don't mean that I'm not for prayer but come on!  Some things require actions...not words...like hiring more police!

Of course, the dumbass mayor or Atlanta not only bitched about the new proposed changes to the Georgia Concealed Carry Permit but said that "we all should be good citizens of the world in this world class city".

I just wanted to say "Hey lady!  What happened to being a great American?!"  I could care less about the rest of the world!

The very moment that she was bitching about the new concealed carry permit revisions (allowing Permit holders to carry their guns into more public spaces like restaurants, bars, and MARTA) two of Atlanta's finest citizens were robbing some folk ON the MARTA train after assaulting and robbing some folk in Buckhead.  She just doesn't get it.
