It must be the fake smile and lack of punctuality.  But, since Mel doesn't own a team and won't be drafting anyone himself, I think I'll wait and see.

Fans are giving Newton hell for that Gruden interview, but coaches and people who actually know are not.

This is a post on a coaches site from Chris Brown, who writes smartfootball.com

Quote
True but it's interesting because in games Newton looked like the cooler head while Locker made a lot of mistakes. The Mallett one is interesting because he may have shown the best football knowledge at all. I agree that watching the Newton one made me think a few things about him: (a) he's a freak athlete, (b) he does seem very coachable, as he had really put to mind all of Malzahn's coaching points and keys for each play and did understand his own plays well, but (c) the NFL is vastly different than what he had to do in college.

This is more fan talk than anything else, but I like Newton but the Carolina Panthers are looking at him as a #1 overall pick. He needs a lot of development to me.

I think Gruden does a nice job with these segments, pretty much the way teams do it when they meet with quarterbacks pre-draft. He does a nice job actually giving them things to work on and constructive criticism while also just having a casual conversation and drawing things out of them.

Not a single coach posting in the thread disagreed, or had anything bad to say about Cam, other than he needs time to aclimate to the NFL systems.

This is what he actually wrote on smart football.

Quote
Setting aside whether there is (or should be) a Jon Gruden test, many on the interwebs have pointed to this video and decided Newton can’t make it:

The argument is that Newton just passes on the long verbiage call and, in not answering, fails the question. Now, it’s clear that Newton’s offense in college was not as complicated as what the pros do, I think the conclusion that Cam is automatically unfit is unfair. He didn’t forget his own plays; he says they did not have it in his offense because everything had to be done from the no-huddle. He says “36″ might be the play name, and they call 36 and up and go. (For what it’s worth, in his book Finding the Winning Edge, put out in 1997, Bill Walsh said the future of football was in no-huddle offenses where the plays were called with single words.)

In the full segment, Cam diagrams a couple of plays and a couple of things were clear to me: (a) he’s a freak athlete, (b) he actually internalized his coaching quite well, as he remembered all the coaching points and axioms from Malzahn (and Gruden said he retained everything in their meeting quite well), and (c) he really does have a long way to go in terms of mastering a complicated NFL system. The upshot is that, while I like Cam’s potential, drafting him number one is risky. But he’s not incapable of mastering an NFL system.

But a final thought. Gruden — rightly, I think — emphasizes to Newton that he is going to have to prepare himself for complicated NFL playbooks and verbiage, because he will be a new employee and that’s what they do. Yet it’s not clear to me that all that verbiage goes to good use; I’m curious if Gruden, if he goes back into coaching, will choose to deluge kids with those insane playcalls or will instead do as Walsh predicted and as Malzahn does, and find a simpler way of doing business. As Cam says in the clip, “simple equals fast,” and as Holgorsen likes to remind his team, “if you’re thinking, you’re not playing.”

In fact, I've not heard one coach say anything bad about the interview other than Cam hasn't been exposed to the wordy and voluminous playbooks of the NFL, but that he seems capable of grasping them and is a freak physically.

I wonder which available QB Gruden as a GM would take if he had to make a choice?

IMO, after keeping up with the NFL Draft for the past 6-7 years or so, Carolina is hoping that the Bills trade up for their #1 pick, because they want Cam. If no one trades up, Carolina takes either Cam or Marcel.

I think Buffalo wants him badly too.
I also think Luck stayed put for more than good will toward Stanford. Watch him land a good team next season via a trade.

Unless Romo really fucks up this year, he aint going nowhere. Dude has hovered near a 100 QB rating every year of his career. Would make no sense.

Except at playoff time or big game. Folks are getting tired of his (Aw schucks) here in Dallas, Another bad season next year and he's gone.

The problem in Dallas isn't the QB or the Coach, it's the meddling owner that coaches by proxy.

It works with the RIGHT head coach. As it did in the 90's. Not sure if JG is THAT kind of coach though. I think the "aww shucks" shit is gone. But Jerry presents a slew of other issues when he "sidelines". Maybe one day Jerry will wake up. Like Trump, he's a smart guy but also has an ego bigger than the city of Dallas. This year will tell a lot.

It worked then because in the beginning, Jones hired coaches to coach...over the years he's meddled more and more thinking he's "learned the game".
