Since October, the Auburn football program has endured a similar smear campaign.  The attacks began in October and ignited almost simultaneously with the realization that the Tigers had the potential to be a serious player in the national championship chase.  The assault was first directed at the player who seemed most responsible for Auburn's meteoric rise, eventual Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Cam Newton. It has since spread to include a plethora of vague and shadowy rumors about everything from coaches to bingo.

When I get a little more time, I think I'll go back in threads to see if I can't find those released statements from Florida and link the lady up.

It takes a lot of digging with google to get through all the bullshit conjecture on blogs, message boards, and hacks like Thayer Evans before you can get to the articles that actually rely on facts.

That's really the point of that piece.

Take the reports of some of Cam's stuff.  It was ONE guy.  He puts it out there and the other people pick it up as "Thayer Evans of FoxSports is reporting..."

A day later, it "must be true because it's everywhere..."  But the thing is "everywhere" is still using that ONE fuck as the source.  It all traces back to him.   And he has a "source" who he will never identify and who could, as far as we know, be his hair gel salesman, the clerk at QueersRUs where he buys his clothes or the dog barking in his neighbor's back yard.

Anyone else notice that John Clayton gave Cam a great review for his workout (as did many others) but the main ESPN article on Cam Newton yesterday was headlined "Cam Struggles"?

Also, the writer of the article insinuated that Cam should have returned for his senior year because he was so terrible in his workout.

EDIT - Here's the article.  The headline has been changed since I read it yesterday:

http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/26426/cam-newton-underwhelming-in-workout

Quote
INDIANAPOLIS -- Auburn quarterback Cam Newton might be second-guessing his decision to throw at the NFL scouting combine.

I was among a small group of Pro Football Writers Association members allowed to watch Sunday afternoon's session at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Newton was off target throughout, frequently overthrowing receivers. But it should be noted quarterbacks work with unfamiliar receivers at the combine. They run at different speeds and break varying routes.

That's why a lot of agents advise their quarterbacks -- as was the case with Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert -- not to throw at the combine and save those drills for campus workouts with receivers they know.

Newton completed 11 of his 21 throws.

His ball sailed on 10-yard outs, 15-yard ins and fly patterns. He was pinpoint on all three of his 12-yard hooks, and completed two of three Z-outs.

The performance was markedly different than the one Newton delivered two weeks ago for a media workout in San Diego.

After watching that display, retired quarterback and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer remarked "The ceiling is so astronomically high for this player, Cam Newton, that the scouts, the GMs, the coaches are really going to be slobbering about the prospects of having him on their team."

Will Sunday's performance hurt Newton's draft stock or turn off a team such as the Buffalo Bills from drafting him third overall? Not by itself. He will need to rebound at his pro day March 8.

Quarterbacks who dazzled Sunday include Arkansas' Ryan Mallett and Washington's Jake Locker. They threw in the early session I didn't attend, but those who witnessed were particularly impressed with Mallett's accuracy.

Also, I'm fairly certain the entire article was edited.  I know he was much more critical of Cam.

al.com was also highly critical while simultaneously blowing smoke up the ass of all Bama players.
