Going To Vegas....

Going To Vegas....
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:42:23 PM »
So, where should I stay?  Taking the wife (post wedding, but not necessarily our honeymoon) the day after just to get away for a few days.

Never been.  I have ZERO clue on where to stay.  Looking at Vegas.com.  Anyone have any suggestions?

The Venetian is awesome.  Especially if you can find a decent deal.

I would suggest staying away from Bally's and Excalibur if at all possible.  Mind you, it has been 11 years now, but the last time we stayed at the Tropicana it was very nice and reasonably priced.

The Mirage.  It is one of, if not the only, hotel on the Strip that does not have an entrance RIGHT ON The Strip or within an easy stroll from the sidewalk - you have to walk up a long driveway to actually get into the casino.  To me that cuts down on the riff raff foot traffic and makes for a nicer stay if you want to enjoy your hotel.

It is also not in the heart of the Strip so again, less riff raff and panhandlers.  it is across the street fromt eh Veneitian and next door to Treasure Island, on the same end as the Stratosphere.  Still an easy walk tho to the rest of the hotels.

But i have not been in nearly7 years - I was preggers with K the last time we went - so I may totally be talking out of my ass.

Okay, my mom-in-law lives in Vegas so I asked her:

If you don't want to stay on the Strip, Sam's Town is the best and the have free shuttles to The Strip and another to Freemont Strip. My wife stayed there one time and really liked it.

The Luxor is pretty good for the one on The Strip.

Mom-in-law says those are the two she always recommends to family that come to visit. The other casinos are good for gambling, but for staying in the hotel, she says Sam's Town is nice, quiet, and you can't beat the fact they will shuttle you to the Strip and back for free.

My in-laws always stay at Sam's Town.  Unless Chop and his lovelly future bride have aged 40 years over the last few weeks, I would not suggest it to them.

If yall do choose that, I may still have a free buffet pass for Arizona Charlies around here I can donate to you.  Charlie was just down the street.

Depends on if you want the hotel to be quiet when you are trying sleeping and not full of thugs. You don't have to be a senior citizen to enjoy the quiet. I enjoy the loud noise of a football game, but put me a room with loud music and people and I become cranky really quick. Mess with my sleep time and somebody might get punched. Yeah, I might be a 65 year old in a 37 year old's body.

Just giving a little advice from somebody that lives there and knows the casinos and hotels better than I do. Mom-in-law said that the problem with staying on The Strip is the type of people you can run into in the hotel part when you are ready to wind down. The Strip basically never sleeps and it depends on if you plan on gambling all night and not sleep any. There are the shady hotels that are worse, so you don't want to get too far away from The Strip, which is why she recommends Sam's Town to most family members. It is still in a good part of the town, but much quieter than the Strip. She described Sam's Town as being able to have a quiet getaway with your spouse while still having easy access to all the exciting fun stuff just a few minutes away when you wanted it. If Chop and his lady want to party all the time and do not care about any quiet time, then Sam's probably is not the place.

Stay at the Golden Nugget. Fremont Street is the best part of Vegas because:
1) Gambling is cheap, you can find $5 tables
2) There is always a party going on
3) You get the old school Vegas feel for the town
4) The strip is full of guidos
5) Deep fried twinkies and oreos if you're into that sort of thing

Don't stay at Excalibur.  Think of it as West Vance with slot machines.  Worth a walk through about 2 or 3 am though.

Same goes for Circus Circus.  It's where all shitty Vegas employees got to die but the people watching is unmatched.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I'd say it depends on what you plan on doing while you're there.  If you're more interested in gambling hard core, I'd agree with somewhere near Fremont.  If your wife is wanting to shop, see shows, and eat at expensive restaurants, I'd look at Caesars Palace.  You can usually get a pretty good deal on a room there (much cheaper than Bellagio or Venetian, yet still nice) and it's in the heart of the Strip.

If you want an immediate free upgrade to a suite, take a condom and bang your girl first thing when you get there.  Put the used condom on the floor under the bed sheet near the far wall, and call the front desk to complain about finding it.  Raise serious hell about it.  They'll bump you up to a Penthouse suite before you can wipe off the pre-cum.

I say pay a little extra and stay on the strip.  If you don't, you'll end up dropping serious coin on cab rides.
My advice:
Stay away from the Stratosphere end (Circus Circus, Hilton, Sahara)
For medium price/quality, Planet Hollywood is a great deal
I agree with a previous post, if you can get a good deal, the Venetian is excellent
Excalibur, Luxor and Imperial Palace = Harvey Updyke
Ceasar's palace is kinda overpriced for what you get
Palms = played out Jersey shore crowd (but the view from the Ghost Bar and Playboy club are amazing)
Freemont Street (Binions, Golden Nugget) = Cheap tables, but no upscale experience

Make sure you take shoes that you have broken in, because even though the next casino is only a block away, the scale of the buildings is so large, nothing is a short walk.  If your wife wears heals out, she should probably drop some flats in her purse (or your night will be cut short)

My vote = Venetian or if on a budget, Planet Hollywood

Yeah, MIL says that when she does do a little gambling, shw prefers to to do it on Freemont rather then the Strip. Again, which is why she tells people to stay at Sam's Town, because they have free shuttles to both Freemont and the Strip running all day. Also, not that you have not gotten the point by now from others, but she concurs with staying away from the Excalibur. It used to be a decent place to stay, and my wife has stayed there before, but apparently it has come under new management within the last several years and has went downhill big time. You can't beat Caesar's, but be ready to spend more money than maybe you plan on because people have a tendency to get carried away when they stay there and before the know it, they have racked up a huge bill. Police are getting called there all the time for people that can't pay their bill.

I hear this also works with hookers on bachelor party trips, so no need to involve a significant other.
