Alabama CB Cyrus Jones arrested on domestic violence charges
WBRC Staff
Apr 29, 2015 07:21 AM
TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones was arrested on two counts of third degree domestic violence.

Jones was booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail on one count of harassment and one count of criminal mischief. Each count carries a $500 bond. He is being held under a mandatory 12-hour domestic violence hold.

Tuscaloosa police responded to the 800 block of 31st Street at 11:20 Tuesday night. Police spoke to the suspect, victim and witnesses and determined that the suspect had taken and damaged the victim's cell phone earlier in the day and threatened to assault her in front of a witness.

Investiators determined there was probable cause to arrest the suspect

Police say the victim is a 22-year-old female.

Jones, a senior who played in all 14 games last season, led all cornerbacks and tied for the team lead with three interceptions.

He is the fourth Alabama player to be arrested this spring.

Yes, these are isolated incidents.  When it happens at other schools, it reveals a deeper rooted problem of overall thuggery.  But since Lord Saybinz continues to have success on the field....Move along.  There's nothing to see here.  Says Mike Herndon over at the dot  I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. of the al

The Tuscaloosa police have been busy in the last few months. That's not to say they aren't always busy, but their work has increasingly involved the University of Alabama football team this spring.

Cornerback Cyrus Jones became the fourth Crimson Tide player arrested since late March when he was charged with domestic violence late Tuesday night. Details of his situation are still coming out -- and apparently involve him damaging a woman's cell phone and threatening her.

Four arrests in less than two months leads us to the question: At what point do the arrests accumulate to the point where becomes indicative of a larger problem?

It happened in Auburn, where a robbery at a trailer park in 2011 ended up revealing the depths of an issue with spice within the program. LSU, Georgia and Florida have all had offseasons that turned into a series of arrests and incidents with the police, spawning similar questions.

In Tuscaloosa, there doesn't appear to be any defining connection between any of the incidents. Jones' arrest was the second involving domestic violence, with the first involving a player, Jonathan Taylor, who had a history with such incidents. The other arrests were for DUI and marijuana possession.

It's easy to say these young men need to be made to understand what is and isn't acceptable. But they are made to understand that. Every program in the SEC -- probably every program in the country -- takes steps to ensure that its athletes understand what's expected of them and how to avoid trouble.

But trouble finds some of them anyway. In that, they are no different than any other 18-, 19-, 20- and 21-year-olds. News broke this week that two other 20-somethings, Shane Ray and La'El Collins, may cost themselves millions in the NFL draft due to legal entanglements this week -- although Collins' situation may be through no fault of his own.

Alabama isn't the only SEC program having legal issues this spring, either. Walk-on Deshun Dixon became the third Mississippi State player arrested since mid-March when he was charged with DUI this week.

With Nick Saban's run of continued success on the field, it'd be slightly ridiculous to think there's been any "loss of control" in the program. Two of the four arrested are no longer with the program.

But now is the time for a strong leader to strengthen his grip.

(WAFF) -
Two Tennessee Valley men are among five people arrested during an internet-based child pornography takedown.

Over the past week, special agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit teamed up with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies across the southeast to make arrests and seize digital devices containing child pornography.

“ALEA's ICAC Unit is focused on locating and arresting predators who use digital media and devices to prey on children,” said Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier. “This multi-jurisdictional initiative is a true testament to the efforts of law enforcement to protect our children.”

Police arrested Richard Bryant, 60, of Ardmore and charged him with one count of failure to provide required registration information. He is being held in the Limestone County Jail.

David Adam Knight, 35, of Decatur, was also charged with one count of failure to provide required registration. He is being held in the Morgan County Jail.

Others arrested include:

Michael Brandon, 37, of Hoover, was charged with one count Possession of Child Pornography and one count Dissemination of Child Pornography and is being held at the Jefferson County Jail.
Darren Venable, 26, of Rainbow City, was charged with three counts Possession of Child Pornography and is being held at Etowah County Jail.
Anthony Andrew Tew, 67, Eufaula, was charged with two counts Possession of Child Pornography and two counts Dissemination of Child Pornography and is being held at the Barbour County
ALEA's ICAC Unit partnered with the Hoover Police Department, Morgan County Sheriff's Office, Decatur Police Department, Limestone County Sheriff's Office, Dale County Sheriff's Office, Eufaula Police Department, Phenix City Police Department, Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Office, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Florida Department of Law Enforcement (Central Florida ICAC) and Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Georgia ICAC). Additionally, ALEA's State Bureau of Investigations and SWAT Team were instrumental in this takedown.

http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2015/06/south_carolina_supreme_court_u.html#incart_river

Quote
The South Carolina Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and resulting sentence of an Alabama football fan whose fight with a South Carolina fan in 2010 led to the other man being crushed to death by a truck.

According to the Supreme Court opinion filed Wednesday, Curtis Simms, an Alabama native living in Columbia, S.C. at the time of the incident, was tailgating outside Williams-Brice Stadium during Alabama-South Carolina football game in 2010.

After the Gamecocks upset No. 1 Alabama, Simms left the tailgate with friends, riding as the front-seat passenger in a truck driven by a friend. As they tried to leave the area, a black truck blocked them from exiting the parking lot.

The front-seat passenger of that truck, Martin Gasque, is described as "an avid Gamecock fan," in the court documents. According to the opinion, Gasque threw his hands up at Simms and his friends after the driver of his truck blocked them off.

According to the State, both men were highly intoxicated at the time.

Simms got out of his truck, walked up to Gasque and punched him once through an open window. Gasque began to exit the vehicle, and Simms hit him several more times, eventually knocking him unconscious.

Unbeknownst to the driver, Gasque fell down underneath his friend's truck. The driver began moving his vehicle to get out of the way of traffic, and "unknowingly began to slowly roll over the victim between his legs, then over his groin, his abdomen, his chest, and finally, his head."

Gasque died on the scene, and Simms was arrested and charged with aggravated breach of the peace and involuntary manslaughter.

A jury found Simms not guilty of the manslaughter charge, but guilty of "high and aggravated breach of the peace," a tricky charge in South Carolina because there are no clearly defined guidelines on what it constitutes or how to sentence its perpetrators.

According to the Supreme Court opinion, "the trial court sentenced Appellant to ten years' imprisonment, suspended upon the service of five years' imprisonment and three years' probation, but later reduced Appellant's sentence to ten years' imprisonment suspended upon the service of three years' imprisonment, plus three years' probation."

Simms appealed his conviction and sentencing on three points, alleging that he should have been acquitted on the breach of peace charge, and if not, given a more lenient sentence. He also argued that one of his friends, who was going to testify in court that Gasque was harassing Alabama fans and publicly urinating before Simms struck him, should have been allowed to testify.

The state's Supreme Court heard the appeal in March and voted 3-2 to affirm Simms' conviction and sentencing in their opinion published Wednesday.

The two dissenting justices did so on semantic grounds, since Simms was found guilty of "high and aggravated breach of the peace," an offense not officially recognized in South Carolina.

The majority, however, argued that "[Simms'] direct involvement in the incident, which led to the victim's unfortunate demise, contributed to the distress of many members of the community, and the general public upheaval that followed. Thus, Simms' actions exemplify the type of behavior constituting an aggravated breach of the peace.]

Quote
Former Crimson Tide football player Brandon Cortez Ivory was among two suspects arrested Wednesday morning on burglary charges, according to a statement released by the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Ivory, who graduated last year from the University of Alabama, and Nicholas Gerald Gibson III, allegedly kicked in the back door of a residence in the 1700 block of East 17th Avenue around 8 a.m. Authorities say the men were armed with an assault rifle and a knife, though they did not specify which weapon was carried by which person.

Two victims told responding officers that assaulted on of them before taking money and Apple iPads. The suspects then fled in a 2003 Toyota Corolla.

Detectives found Ivory and Gibson at an apartment complex where they live in the 800 block of 31st Street. Both were taken into custody and the money and iPads were recovered, according to Tuscaloosa Police.

Both men are being held on two counts of first degree burglary and are being questioned by authorities at the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Ivory, a Memphis native, was the Crimson Tide's most experienced nose guard in 2014.
