Well he is 19.  That actually puts him in front of the bell curve for being an Alabama fan and making it to high school.

Infant abused, father jailed
Published 12:02am Tuesday, March 20, 2012

An Andalusia man was arrested Monday after confessing to abusing his 2-month-old daughter.

The alleged abuse was discovered by the child’s mother, said Andalusia Police Department investigator, Cody Warren.

“The mother noticed the child had suspicious bruising, so she took the child to a local pediatrician,” Warren said. “The doctor’s office referred the case to (the Department of Human Re-sources), who in turn, contacted us. We brought Mr. Barton in for an interview, and he admitted to it.”

Arrested was Charles Michael Barton, 19, on one count of torture/willful abuse of a child. Barton was booked into the Covington County Jail and is being held on a $150,000 bond.

“It’s tough to see cases like this where not only is the victim a child, but that also the person responsible is the child’s father,” Warren said.

No further details about the case were released, as it remains under investigation.

Oak Mountain Middle School teacher arrested on sexual abuse charges
Mar 30, 2012

Jeffrey Scott Atkins, courtesy Shelby County Sheriff's Office

shelby county, al -

the shelby county board of education says a teacher and band director at oak mountain middle school has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse.

the boe names the teacher as 38-year-old jeffrey scott atkins of alabaster, and says he has been placed on administrative leave by the school district as it conducts an investigation into the charges.

the shelby county boe contacted alabama department of human resources and the shelby county sheriff's office on wednesday, march 28, requesting help in an investigation of possible inappropriate contact between atkins and a student, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

"investigators determined that communication between the teacher and the student using phone texts and social media outlets was sexual in nature," the sheriff's press release says.

investigators tried to locate atkins for questioning on wednesday. they eventually found him and detained him in montgomery county on thursday, march 29.

"the charges against mr. atkins are allegations at this point. however, the allegations are of the upmost gravity in that they implicate unprofessional conduct by a teacher towards a student," said shelby county superintendent randy fuller.

atkins has been with shelby county since 1999, the whole time at oak mountain middle school. he has no prior incidents of misconduct and passed a criminal background check in october or 1999.

atkins is charged with the following:

-3 counts of sexual abuse in the first degree. each count has a bond set at $100,000.

-1 count of enticing a child to enter a vehicle, house, etc., for immoral purposes. bond set at $100,000.

-1 count of electronic solicitation of a child. bond set at $150,000.

-1 count of school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 years. bond set at $5,000.

atkins' total bond is set at $555,000. he is currently in the shelby county jail.

according to a bio page for "jeff atkins--director of middle school bands" on the oak mountain middle school band website, atkins is married with three children and actively involved in music ministry at riverside baptist church. his bio also says he graduated from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, played in the Million Dollar Band and also worked as a teacher at Shelby Academy, Bottenfield Jr. High School, and Minor High School.

In a release about the arrest, Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry urges parents to vigilantly check their children's phones, computers and social media accounts for any type of inappropriate contact or activity.

"This case, while still under investigation, reaffirms how carefully we have to guard our children and protect them from the perils of this world," Curry said.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Shelby County Sheriff's Office directly at (205)669-4181, through the Secret Witness line at (205)669-9116 or through our website at www.ShelbySO.com by clicking on the "Report Criminal Activity" link and choosing the "General Information" category.

DECATUR, Alabama -- Police arrested an 18-year-old man Monday after a string of automobile burglaries in Decatur.

Joel Christopher Britnell of Decatur was charged with one count of unlawful breaking and entering to a motor vehicle Sunday. Britnell was booked at the Decatur City Jail, but will be transferred to Morgan County Jail. Bond hasn't been set because the investigation is continuing and more charges are pending, according to police.

Monday morning, police responded to Buckingham Gate, a street in the London Place subdivision in southwest Decatur, because of numerous reports of auto burglaries. An officer recognized there were a rash of these burglaries Sunday night and spearheaded an investigation. It was later revealed that some of the stolen property from the vehicles was at a residence at 1214 Castleman Ave. in Decatur.

The officer notified investigators with Decatur's Property Crimes Unit. Detectives went to the Castleman home and found Britnell. They recovered numerous stolen items at the residence along with a handgun, drugs and synthetic marijuana, which is also known as "spice."

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- A woman who flagged down deputies Wednesday morning near the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office to track down a supposedly stolen vehicle was arrested for credit card fraud and identity theft.

Teresa Cunningham Averette, 47, told deputies about a possibly stolen Toyota 4Runner after contacting them at 8th Street and Lurleen Wallace Blvd North,  Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Andy Norris said in a news release.

Deputies located the vehicle and its owner, Richard Morgan Shirley, 51, who was found with prescription drugs that were not his, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Norris said.

"The vehicle was found to be not stolen but the object of a civil dispute," Norris said.

During the investigation, Averette was found to be wanted by the Sheriff's Office for two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and identity theft. Her daughter, Bambi Tiffany Nicole Averette-Dunn, 28, was arrested for unlawful possession of prescription drugs.

All three were transported to the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

Averette was charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and identity theft. She was released on $45,000 bond.

Averette-Dunn was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. She was released on $10,000 bond.

Shirley was charged with unlawful possession of prescription drugs, first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail. His bond was set at $17,500.

TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama wide receiver DeAndrew White has been hospitalized with an apparent concussion following an altercation on University Boulevard early Thursday morning, a source close to the situation has confirmed to Tidesports.com.

White is not seriously injured, according to the source.

Another man was found unconscious with severe head injuries a block away. Police aren't sure whether the cases are related or how that man was injured, but the source said there were two separate incidents on the Strip.

Tuscaloosa and University Police initially responded to the 1200 block of University Boulevard at 2:10 a.m., just after bars closed, on a report of shots fired, said Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit commander Capt. Loyd Baker.

No weapons were involved in the fight. The people who fired the shots were not involved, and said that they fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Police arrested Ryan Javaris Hamilton, 22, and Quamayne Rakesh Tolbert, 22. They were charged with reckless endangerment.

The second man, 31, was found lying unconscious on the sidewalk a block away, in the 1300 block of University Boulevard, with severe head injuries. Neither man's injuries resulted from the shots that were fired, Baker said.

Another shooting on May 20th:

Quote
http://blog.al.com/tuscaloosa/2012/05/gun_play_along_tuscaloosas_str.html

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- People firing guns along Tuscaloosa's popular restaurant-bar area known as the Strip have prompted police to increase patrols in the area, The Tuscaloosa News reports.

No one was injured when gunshots were fired into the air during two incidents along University Boulevard in the past month or so but the Tuscaloosa Police Department has assigned more officers to patrol near night spots, both on the Strip and downtown.

TPD and University of Alabama always patrol the Strip area, but the city decided to add additional staff every night, rather than just Thursdays through Saturdays, traditionally the nights when more people are in the area.

On April 19 and May 3, men fired shots in the air with intentions of breaking up fights, they told police. A total of three people have been arrested and charged in those cases.

Report: Alabama graduate assistant
Derrick Crudup Jr. arrested for marijuana possession

05/29/2012 9:11 PM

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Derrick Crudup Jr., an Alabama offensive graduate assistant since 2010, was arrested May 22 in Jackson and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to a BamaOnline.com report.

Alabama spokesman Doug Walker said the athletic department is "aware of the situation and will take the appropriate action at the appropriate time."

When contacted this evening by the Tuscaloosa bureau, a JPD clerk said she was unable to provide any information until Wednesday morning, when Chief of Police Charles Burge returned to the office.

According to BamaOnline.com, Crudup Jr. was initially stopped for a traffic violation. He possessed "less than a gram" of marijuana, Burge told the website.

Crudup Jr., a backup quarterback to Ken Dorsey on Miami's 2002 BCS championship team, posted $500 bond and was detained for fewer than two hours.

Crudup Jr. came to Alabama in 2010 after one year at nearby Stillman College, where he was the team's offensive coordinator. He first became acquainted with Alabama's coaches by helping out at various camps.

Crudup Jr., the son of former Oklahoma and NFL quarterback Derrick Crudup Sr., played at Miami from 2000-04. After graduation, he coached at high schools in Georgia.

$5 says that he was either coming back from a ”recruiting visit” or he was on his way to one.
