Poison oak outbreak at Auburn

What I like about this story is the meticulous care taken in reporting a prank.

Example: Note the amount of poison found in the soil to the exact decimal point. Is this an autopsy or just dead trees?

If you didn't think the Auburn-Alabama rivalry was a big deal, it now involves the Paul Finebaum show, soil samples, presidential statements and tree forensics. Let's hope this isn't taken to the next level and some Bama fans steals every piece of toilet paper in Auburn. Although, that would kind of balance things out. No trees to roll, no rolls. Makes sense.

There is an obvious warning for Auburn fans going forward: With your famous trees dying,  don't drink the Kool-Aid.

It's time to petition WJOX.   And it's advertisters.  We HAVE to strike back at this shit.

I'm going to craft a letter today.  I will make it available for everyone.  We need to flood the advertisers with this letter explaining that we will no longer frequent their establishments as long as they advertise on WJOX.

We need to send it to WJOX management, every host on the show and whoever else will make a difference.

We've got to have a goundswell  movment.  A grassroots uprising.

I told you guys this was war over a year ago.  Is anybody with me now?

We need a website exposing the WJOX bias.  List what they do every day.   One person doing it will be dismissed as crackpot.   Thousands doing it?  That's power.

Who is our Martin Luther King?

Dunnaway apologized

Quote
OPEN LETTER FROM JIM DUNAWAY:

I wanted to take a second to apologize in a forum with more than 140 characters.

As some of you know, Wednesday I "retweeted" a comment from a Rivals Reporter in the fast moving reaction to the Toomer's Corner vandalism. My retweet happened between my two TV newscast (5:34pm).

I saw these 10 words "Father who poisoned tree claims son knew nothing about it".

That's it. No other comments from me. Just those 10 words. When I read that, I took it as a news item. This story had originated on The Paul Finebaum Show when a caller had called Paul to brag about what he had done to the trees. I saw "Father who poisoned tree claims son knew nothing about it" and thought to myself that Paul had chased down the guy who had poisoned the tree and had him on the radio and he had made that quote. I thought "Al from Dadeville" or whomever it is, was on the radio trying to take the heat off him and his family. So I retweeted the comments that looked like this: RT @MattScalici: RT @ travisreier Father who poisoned tree claims son knew nothing about it.

One hour later, when I got off the news set at 6:35pm, Auburn Rivals reporter Justin Hokanson had been texting me, wanting to know (with a lot of CAPITAL LETTERS) why was I on twitter joking about the incident at Toomer's?

He pointed out that the tweet was actually a Cam Newton joke.

Honestly, I didn't get it when I tweeted it. I get it now. When I read those 10 words, Cam Newton didn't pop into my mind. I don't think like fans enough I guess, and maybe I'm just not that smart...but when I read "Father who poisoned tree claims son knew nothing about it", I thought about the Auburn Police Investigation, not the NCAA and Cam. I know I got some comments from some of you who said they thought the same thing.

10 words, "Father who poisoned tree claims son knew nothing about it"

Regardless, that was my mistake. For that I am sorry.

I've tried to answer every phone call, email (even the ones that threatened my kids etc.), tweet, text. I'll keep doing that... here is my e-mail jim@joxfm.com

I know a lot of you are not on twitter, have never listened to my radio or tv shows...and only found out about this on message boards. I don't know what all was said in those forums, but that was the only comments that came from me. Those 10 words sent out to my 7,000 plus followers with no jokes, reaction etc. from me. Things can get very distorted in those forums sometimes. I hope this sheds a little light from my point of view. Thanks for reading.

I sent him this from my work email, just because I want him to know that he is dealing with real people:

Jim,

Unlike some other people, I will not hide behind an anonymous email or phone call, as I am sure you are getting plenty of those.

I read your apology for the tweet that poked fun at the Toomer’s Corner situation while taking a shot at Cam Newton and Auburn in general.  I find it to be a bit of backtracking and disingenuous.  If you were truly only repeating a tweet in the name of news, then I apologize for what I am about to say.  However, it seems to me that as a TV and radio personality/journalist, you would have taken the time to investigate and confirm this before purporting to pass it off as “news”.  The perception is that you were like so many others, looking for the quick laugh and the pat on the back from your Alabama brethren.

We’ve all made inappropriate jokes before.  Be a man and fess up, it was a mistake.  It was a quick one-liner that you understood immediately and passed it on to your tweets (or whatever they are called) to get the kudos from the Crimson Mafia.  Unfortunately, you have a wider audience than that.  Auburn people apparently follow you on the Tweets and you got busted.  It’s happened to us all.  I have told the inappropriate joke in mixed company before and gotten the stare of death from my parents or wife.

Keep the jokes between you and your Alabama buddies from now on and it’ll all be good.  We know that y’all don’t get it.  It ‘s a tree.  It’s not like it’s a created national championship from 1941.  However, to us, it’s more than a tree.  It’s good times, it’s a special place.  Those trees have been there longer than Alabama has been playing football.  They are a piece of our history, our tradition, which goes far beyond winning and losing football games.  We know you’ll never understand, but at least be tolerant of our feelings right now.

Please, even if it’s only here in private between us, man up and take responsibility for your joke that was in poor taste.  I’ll keep it down home, cuz…(see, that was an Eric Ramsey joke, but enough time has passed and such that it was entirely appropriate.  Auburn grads do have a sense of humor, it just has to be funny to us is all.)

One last thing, I did not listen to your show much in the past anyway, but you can be sure that JOX will be permanently deleted from my listening options in the future.  I will also be contacting your sponsors to let them know that I will not support businesses that support views such as yours.

Signed my name and erthing.

Let's see how he responds...

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
