Cammy Cam Workout

Cam Newton worked out in San Diego today.

Apparently, some are saying he could be the #1 pick overall if he continues to workout like this when NFL scouts are present.

It got Trent Dilfer horny enough to almost pork the fat chick reporter he was out there with.  Yeah.  I said "pork".

Quote
NFL scouts couldn’t attend Cam Newton’s random Thursday “Media Day” workout.  But if they could . . .

“That was phenomenal,” ESPN’s Trent Dilfer reports via Bruce Feldman.   â€œIf scouts saw this they’d have been slobbering.”

With all due respect to my fellow scribes in attendance, Dilfer’s opinion may be the only one that particularly matters from this workout.  Dilfer does as much homework as any analyst, and he’s usually a tough critic.  We trust him if he said it was an impressive session.

Tony Pauline of SI.com wrote earlier this week that “at least” six teams rank Newton as their top overall prospect in the draft.   It defies belief that six teams even have a “top-ranked” player at this stage, but the note shows that Newton has some serious support within the scouting community.  Not to mention with Dilfer.

“His mechanics are so sound,” Dilfer said.   â€œThe ball just jumps off his hands.  He made 30 big-time throws.”

Newton’s workout on Thursday ultimately doesn’t mean that much, but it’s a good sign he’s so confident in his development.  It’s a better sign that he impressed Dilfer so much.

The next step: Make the actual scouts slobber at the Combine or a real Pro Day.

Sam Bradford put a ton critics to shame with his workouts.  The scouts know what they're looking for and analyze a players potential far different than the casual fan....meaning me.

It took Cam a few short games to adjust to the SEC and D1 ball in general.  And yes, it was obvious to even the casual fan....me...that he had work to do after watching him fail to see wide open guys time after time in his first few games.  BUT...he fixed that shit big time and I have no doubt he'll adjust quickly to what they want him to do in the pros.

FWIW, some guy called in to Fbomb claiming he played for some Buff. Bills coach at Livingston, and that his old coach told him that Buff. would do whatever it took to get Cam.  I don't know exactly where they are in the draft order, but I know they sucked this past year.

No.

You were a dumbass for saying Cam is a better prospect than Andrew Luck.

And if Luck were in the draft, he would still be the unanimous vote for #1 pick.

Warren Moon as mentor... awesome.

Quote
While Whitfield is Newton's coach, Moon described his role as a mentor.

"But if I see something that I can help him improve on, I'm going to do that," Moon said.

During the session, Moon picked up on something and told Newton.

"He wasn't transferring well," Moon said afterward. "He was throwing leaning backward. Even though he has a very strong arm, I don't care how strong of an arm you have, if you're not in the right throwing motion, you're not going to get good accuracy on the football, the ball is going to go high on you. As soon as he gets that weight transferred, he throws the ball as accurately as anyone you've been around."

Moon isn't at every session, but Whitfield films every workout and sends it to him.

"I just see him improving," Moon said. "Every day he does something a little bit better than he did the day before, whether it's taking the snap from center or whether it's transferring his weight from dropping back to throwing the football. That's where he's making his biggest adjustment, to me, is being able to drop back, because that's something he's never had to do, and then transfer that weight forward to get velocity behind your throws and also to get accuracy."

Newton usually does throwing with Whitfield in the morning and then does classroom work and speed work in the afternoon.

A month removed from Auburn's BCS title game victory over Oregon, Newton said he's approaching things as a professional athlete.

"This whole transformation from the college level to the NFL is a big leap," he said. "But at the same time, you have to be mature enough to be able to work on your talent when nobody is looking. This is your profession, this is your job. And I have to come at it every single day trying to get better at what I do."

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Cam Newton’s media workout called a “publicity stunt”

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 31, 2011, 9:30 AM EST

The NFL Draft process is one of endless routine.  So when a player breaks out of that routine, he’s going to get criticized.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton’s decision to hold a media-only workout before the NFL Scouting Combine is an odd one.  NFL scouts are not allowed by rule to attend any event other than at the Combine or the player’s school or hometown.

Newton will work out in Del Mar, California.  The purpose is essentially to show media folks that he’s not JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Vince Young, or any other quarterback that didn’t have the reputation as a hard worker.

One executive told Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com/CBSSports.com that it was nothing more than a “publicity stunt.”  Another scout wondered about the entire approach.

“The Newtons would be best to realize they aren’t in college anymore. Regardless of how good he looks for [the media], there isn’t going to be a bidding war for him,” the scout told Rang.   â€œWe’re not recruiting him. They could wind up turning more people against them than for them with this [workout].”

We suspect the workout won’t really make a difference one way or another.  It’s not going to help Newton’s chances of going high in the draft.  But if Newton performs well in the workouts attended by NFL personnel, it shouldn’t hurt him either.

Talent always wins out on draft day.

I honestly have no clue how either of these guys will turn out in the pros but I have a hard time believing that Cam Newton doesn't have more potential to succeed than Mr. Luck.  Not saying for one second that Luck won't be the bomb but how can anyone honestly compare the two and say Luck is the better prospect?  How much has anyone here actually seen him play.  Take a look at a simple comparison.

Andrew Luck 6'4" 235

Passing:  263/372 70.7% 3338 yds 32 TD 8 INT  170.16 PR

Rushing: 453 Yards 3 TD

Cam Newton 6'6" 250

Passing: 185/280 66.1% 2854 yds 30TD 7INT 182.05 PR

Rushing: 1,483 Yards 20TD

A couple of things to note here.  Luck plays in the offense minded PAC SUX and in fact threw almost 100 more passes for 32 TD's.  Cam throws almost 100 less passes for 30 TDs....against the best defenses, the best league in the country..by a country mile.  Cam rushed for 1,483 yards and 20 TDs...again..against the best defenses in the country, while Luck hammered out 3 scores.  Yes, I'm well aware that no QB will be able to run in the pros like Cam did this year in college; however, he WILL run a good bit regardless and that threat will make him dangerous in the pros as well.  It's not like you can't run at all in the pros from the QB position.  It's been done.  Ask John Elway, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Michael Vick etc.

My biggest thing with Cam is looking at what he did in this league and how he improved to become an incredibly well rounded QB in ONE year.  Just think what he could do with 2-3 years of professional tutoring and experience.
