No pun intended...

Quote
Gov.-elect Robert Bentley intends to be governor over all, but says only Christians are his 'brothers and sisters'

MONTGOMERY -- Gov.-elect Robert Bentley in a speech at a Baptist church this afternoon said he plans to be the governor of all Alabamians and be color-blind, but he also said people who aren't ''saved" Christians aren't his brothers and sisters.

Bentley told a big crowd at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where the late civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once was pastor, that he believed it was important for Alabamians ''that we love and care for each other."

''I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor ... I became the governor of all the people. I intend to live up to that. I am color blind," Bentley said in a short speech given about an hour after he took the oath of office as governor.

Then Bentley, who for years has been a deacon at First Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, gave what sounded like an altar call.

"There may be some people here today who do not have living within them the Holy Spirit," Bentley said. ''But if you have been adopted in God's family like I have, and like you have if you're a Christian and if you're saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you just like the Holy Spirit lives within me, then you know what that makes? It makes you and me brothers. And it makes you and me brother and sister."

Bentley added, ''Now I will have to say that, if we don't have the same daddy, we're not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother."

Asked later if he meant to be insulting to people of other faiths, Bentley replied, ''We're not trying to insult anybody."

Bentley's communications director, Rebekah Caldwell Mason, when asked about Bentley's comments said, ''He is the governor of all the people, Christians, non-Christians alike."

Bentley in his speech also told the crowd, which was celebrating King's birthday, that, ''I think that Dr. Martin Luther King was one of the greatest men that has ever lived."

''I appreciate what he has done for not only the African-American community but for the white community, because he helped everything to change, even though he had to give his life for it," Bentley said.

Bentley then said he would work to help Alabamians whether they live in Wilcox County, where many poor blacks live, or Mountain Brook, where many upper-income whites live.

''You know, (for) a lot of people, it's hard to trust a Republican governor," Bentley said. ''Let me tell you. I want to tell you today that I promise you that I'm going to do everything I can for everybody in this state."

I don't agree with a lot of what he said nor am I a Baptist, but keep in mind where he said this. As long as he doesn't govern with this I'm ok with it.....freedom of speech, religion and all.

Yeah, exactly.  It's ok if one guy does it, but if it were a Jewish or Muslim man.  Oh noes....

However, that's not the point.  The point is that Bentley is a babbling bible thumper who is shoving his religion in peoples faces.  You aren't his brother if you aren't saved.  Best convert now or you might not get represented by him.

Hypocrite...  My ass!  It was an inappropriate venue for the statement, but he's entitled to his opinions/beliefs.  Now, if he was a radical Muslim talking about his 72 virgins for killing infidels, that would be a different story.

Now, back under you rock...

Haha, you just proved my point.  Good job.

It is a radical statement to say you are not my brothers and sisters if you aren't saved and Christian.  I'm sure you would be like, "Ok, it's cool, this guy is just voicing his opinion.", if a politician who was a Muslim gave a speech at a Mosque saying you aren't my brothers and sisters if you don't believe in Mohammad and Islam.   :taunt:

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You might not like the rest, but your last statement didn't show up anywhere in his speech.  He said that he would represent everyone.  What's the problem?  It was obvious the guy was a devout Christian before he was elected, he's saying things that pretty much any deacon would say.

Bentley:  See Above.

He was, of course, exercising his 1st Amendment right to free speech which he's entitled to do but it's this exact kind of public remark by a politician that has, in part, turned me completely against another (former) governor, Mike Huckabee.  He talks a good line and is probably very personable to meet but to me he's just another closed-minded, bigoted, provincial hayseed when it comes to attitudes about religious beliefs and faiths other than his own.  Huckabee made no mistake about how he 'feels' about Mormons when he was playing his fear-mongering games during the Republican Primaries (especially in Southern States where there are a lot of Baptists).  He has since denied it at least once that I know of but it was very clear that's what he was doing to Romney.

This guy seems to be no different in his attitude...probably thinks that the people who go to the Second Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa or the First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa are all going to hell too...in addition to the Catholics.  He really should have stuck to speaking about the work of Rev. Dr. King and not try to proselytize.

Wrong again...  My example of the radical Muslim statement advocated violence against non-Muslims.  That's the difference, and that's what you, Rosie O'Donnell and the rest of "your kind" never seem to understand.  You equate anything remotely Christian with the most vile and disgusting acts advocated and committed by radical Islam.  Your gov was just talking about accepting his religion rather than killing non-Christians.   While innappropriate for the venue, the messages are completely different.

Yeah, exactly.  It's ok if one guy does it, but if it were a Jewish or Muslim man.  Oh noes....

Actually, Jewish and Muslim politicians and leaders do similar all of the time.  You just don't have much exposure to it living in Alabama.  And by the way, a lot of cities and states are far less sensitive to it as well.

Speaking of which, that is what pisses me off the most about what he said.  It embarrasses the State of Alabama again.

People of Alabama: No, we are very nice southern state that is comprised of smart and not crazy radical christian conservatives.  We can think for ourselves.

Right...  There you go again.  As if Christian Conservatives are incapable of thinking for themselves...

I'm still failing to see the problem you have.  Of course as a Christian he believes that only Christians are saved and going to heaven.  It says in the Bible, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the father except through Me.  John 14:6".  If you believe in the Bible that kind of means that Jesus is how you are saved.  Now to me (and most other Baptists) that includes pretty much all the evangelical denominations and most Catholics and Orthodox Christians.  Which is better than what most Catholics believe (go and read up on what the Pope says about non orthodox denominations and their salvation).

So yes, that means that to most Christians that Mormons, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, agnostics, wiccans, new age crystal carriers are not going to heaven.  Which is why Christians "shove their religion in your face", it's out of concern.  Muslims feel the same way about their view on God, a lot of them just choose to proselytize with suicide bombers and threats, most Christians (I'm looking at you Westboro Baptist Church) got over that in the middle ages with the end of the Inquisition and Crusades.

Again, if a guys says he's a Christian and he gets elected and then talks about his religion what's the problem?  If he say's he's a Muslim and then gets elected and says that he needs to schedule in prayer time 5 times a day good for him.  You knew what you were getting when you elected the guy.

I certainly cannot speak for AWK; the only problem that I have with what the Gov.-Elect said (as emphasized by AWK) is that it was completely inappropriate to the occasion.  Perhaps the venue stirred his faith.  At any rate, there are reams of print and miles of video about the Civil Rights work of MLK that could have been commented on, referenced, praised, or criticized without going into a sermon.  He should have used better judgment.
