Saban vs. Chizik
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:45:35 PM »
Now that Year Two is in the books for Chizik, I think it's fair to compare the two coaches. Keep in mind that Chizik has been there exactly half the time Saban has. Chizik has had a better first two years hands down. Chizik edges out a better overall career at the current school as well, even with half the time to do it.

Chizik (Two Years):
One National Championship
One Undefeated Season
One SEC Championship
One Heisman Trophy Winner
22-5 (81.4815%)
1-1 in Iron Bowls (50%)

Saban (Four Years):
One National Championship
One Undefeated Season
One SEC Championship
One Heisman Trophy Winner
43-11 = (79.6296%)
*38-11 including vacations (77.5510%)
2-2 in Iron Bowls (50%)

Saban (Two Years):
Zero National Championships
Zero Undefeated Seasons
Zero SEC Championships
Zero Heisman Trophy Winners
17-8 = (68.0000%)
*14-8 including vacations (63.6364%)
1-1 in Iron Bowls (50%)

And Chizik never lost to a Sunbelt team in that time (or any team outside of the SEC for that matter).

Any other statistics that can be thrown out there?

It may not be time to build that statue (bammers, LOL), but I'd say it's never too soon to name something after him.

"So I want everybody to think here for a second, how much does this game mean to you? 'Cause if it means something to you, you can't stand still. You understand? You play fast! You play strong! You go out there and dominate the man you're playing against, and you make his ass quit! That's our trademark! That's our M.O.... as a team! That's what people know us as!" ~ Nick Saban

Chiz is 2-0 in bowls, and Malzahn is actually the head coach, just ask the bammers.

Yeah, and then I post the pics all over bammer boards. I might even get a little on his face for good measure.

It's different this year.

1) We snatched Bama's crown. We are comparing last year's National Champions with this year's National Champions. They had just won a National Championship and were still more concerned with the goings-on at a program that spent two years in mediocrity after a 5-11 SEC run.

And more importantly

2) We were told for the last four years that Saban is more God than human, and that Auburn would never win a football game again, much less a National fucking Championship. Gene Chizik was a laughing stock that was sure to set our program back generations, while Saban won the next 45 MNC's in a row.

I've spent four years hearing that Saban is the 1b to Bear Bryant's 1a as greatest coach of all time, while simultaneously hearing that Gene Chizik was the worst hire in the entire history of college football.

He's done more with less, so if Saban is the God these fans want to build a false idol to, Chizik is the real fucking deal.

I hear ya. I just didn't wanna be the very thing I've always accused them of being. I really want to enjoy this.

It's ok to butt heads with your rivals even if they're the ones starting the head butts.

Saban wins the argument as of right now because in Saban's three collegiate head coaching jobs, he has been very successful.  He turned a difficult Michigan State situation into a positive one, and he led an LSU program that was down in the dumps to a national championship winner.

He then went on to take an Alabama program that was a laughing stock to a national championship winner along with their first Heisman trophy.

The most interesting comparison is their styles of coaching and leadership.  Saban is a very hard nosed business man who believes in focusing on the task at hand without any distractions.  Chizik is more laid back and allows his program to enjoy itself while fostering the development of the football team.

Both have experienced success, but I'd take Chizik's way every day.

If you look at full body of work, then you have to take Saban over Chizik. 5-19 and such.

If you take this coach at this University (which is all that matters if you ask me. Ask me if I gave a shit about Tuberville's record at Ole Miss), then you have to go Chizik over Saban.

When you start picking and choosing what to compare, one could build a strong argument that if Chizik doesn't go on to win 22 more games over the next 2 seasons including 17 more regular season games without a loss, then Saban > Chizik.

Of course, that's only if you pick and choose what you'd like to compare.
