LUBBOCK — Texas Tech defensive coordinator James Willis is leaving after one season to pursue other opportunities.

The school said Sunday that Willis will not coach in the Ticket City Bowl against Northwestern on New Year's Day.

Willis joined the Red Raiders after Tommy Tuberville was hired as head coach. Willis was an assistant to Tuberville at Auburn. He spent the 2009 season as associate head coach at Alabama. It was his first season as a defensive coordinator with Texas Tech.

Texas Tech finished 116th out of 120 teams in total defense, allowing 463 yards per game.

The Avalanche-Journal learned Sunday night Willis was talking about a job with the University of Florida and Tech coach Tommy Tuberville found out through third parties. The two came to a mutual agreement Willis should leave Tech ...

“I wish James the best of luck, but it is important for (the) football team to keep pressing forward,” Tuberville said in the statement. “We have a great defensive staff here that will carry the load along with my assistance as we prepare for Northwestern .”

I'm with Sweets.  Loyalty to Tubs is fine - and I get that Tubs waited a year to get another job, so Willis had to find a stop gap.  And it is admirable that he jumped to Tubs as soon as Tubs was settled.  Ordinarily I would have no issue with that at all whatsoever, we'll remember you fondly.

HOWEVER, when the stop gap between Auburn and Tubs is bammer?  Going from Auburn to BAMMER?  Fuck you, Willis.  You are dead to me.
