Auburn's Cam Newton is AP's Player of the Year; Tigers wrap up pre-Christmas practice

Cam Newton has another award to add to his long list of honors this football season.

The Auburn quarterback was named the Associated Press Player of the Year on Wednesday.

That'll fit nicely in his trophy case with the Heisman, Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards, among his many honors this season.

Newton received 51 votes from the 60-member AP football poll panel. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore received three, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck got two and four ballots were unreturned.

**Coach Gene Chizik said Wednesday's workout was a "good last practice before taking a little bit of break before Christmas."

Chizik said the Tigers "deserved a break."

**Chizik said the start-and-stop approach to practice -- four days on campus before Christmas, five days on-campus after Christmas and then work in Arizona -- isn't disruptive.

"A typical game week you get only three days of practice, so we still have plenty of time to prepare,'' Chizik said.

Chizik said the next phase of practice will be "more geared toward schemes."

**Auburn staged a short scrimmage for its young players at the end of the last two practices. Chizik said that constituted 15-20 plays Wednesday and "probably a few more yesterday."

"It's fun for them,'' Chizik said.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said he put his "base plan in" during the last four practices." Defensive coordinator Ted Roof also said he has put his "base plan in against their base run and passes" as well as taking a look at young players.

"As a bowl team," Roof said, "you basically get another spring practice -- although our primary focus is to win this game,'' Roof said.

**Malzahn said quarterback Newton has "responded well" upon his return from his week of accepting awards, including the Heisman.

"It took a day or two..." Malzahn said. "But the last two days he's had his game-face on."

*Chizik wouldn't say if all the Tigers are academically eligible for the game.

"Right now, we're still getting some things cleared up academically,'' he said.

**Newton and Nick Fairley are two juniors who could certainly enter the NFL draft in the spring.

"We'll sit down and talk about it at the appropriate time,'' Chizik said.

Chizik said he has not discussed it because "we're focused on one thing'' -- and that's the BCS title game.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Hell of a trophy case.

Kind of makes you feel bad for all the pre season favorites.  Well maybe not.
