Auburn University will have classes on day of BCS game

AUBURN -- A year after the University of Alabama faced criticism for canceling classes while its football team played in the Bowl Championship Series national championship game, Auburn University is taking a different approach. When the No. 1 Tigers play No. 2 Oregon on Jan. 10 in Glendale, Ariz., class will still be in session on the Plain.

But the university is asking students and professors to be understanding about absences. Ainsley Carry, Auburn's vice president for student affairs, sent a mass e-mail to students and faculty members Tuesday. Classes for the spring semester will begin as scheduled on Jan. 10. However, since many students and at least some faculty members will be in Arizona, there are no plans to punish scofflaws.

Share  106 Comments Students are asked to notify their professor by Jan. 9 if they plan to be out of town on Jan. 10 or 11. Faculty members are asked to extend the same courtesy to students if they are canceling class, although the university has asked professors to make some sort of assignment in lieu of requiring a physical appearance in the classroom.

Details of the policy are being handled by the respective colleges and academic departments.

Auburn distributed its student tickets this week through a lottery system. Winners earned the right to buy a ticket at face value -- $300. To discourage scalping, students are required to pick up the tickets in Arizona using an Aub urn ID card. Any additional or returned student tickets will be available in a second lottery Monday.

Although there has been some grumbling, there appears to be no serious backlash against the university's plan to start the semester on schedule. An article on the subject drew thousands of readers but nary a comment on the website of the Auburn Plainsman, the student newspaper. There were a few critical comments on message boards, but most defended the university.

"We shouldn't shut down an entire university because of a football game," one fan wrote on Inside the Auburn Tigers.

I'm a current teacher, and I'm about to begin grad school.  I think they should cancel classes.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
