Auburn notes: Cam Newton may get green light; Trovon Reed may be groundedPublished: Thursday, October 07, 2010, 8:12 PM Charles Goldberg, Auburn Bureau Auburn quarterback Cam Newton could be back on the run in Saturday night's game at Kentucky.Newton, the SEC rushing leader last week, didn't have a designed carry against Louisiana-Monroe last Saturday, but the SEC game in Lexington may change that strategy.Coach Gene Chizik says he'll be watching to see what Kentucky does to defend Newton."We're going to do what we've got to do, and if that requires Cameron carrying the ball a little bit more than we'd like, we've got to win the game," Chizik said Thursday night on his weekly Tiger Talk radio show. "He's a weapon, and we all know that. Is there a fine line in there? There certainly is. We've tried to coach him up on when there's a huge shot coming, try to get out of bounds. He's been better at doing that."Newton leads Auburn in rushing, with 474 yards; and in carries, with 76.**Freshman wide receiver Trovon Reed, a versatile athlete who would have likely been Auburn's Wildcat quarterback and more, seems to be headed to a redshirt season. Reed has been bothered by a sore knee since preseason drills. He has been limited to two plays in one game, that coming against Clemson on Sept. 18.He didn't dress out last week for the first time this season."He's been in that situation where he's been dinged up,'' Chizik said. "I'm not going to say any guarantees, 100 percent, but medically, he's just really struggled. If he was healthy this year there would be no question he would have helped us and would continue to help us. That's just not the case with him right now. We're just going to take it day-by-day."**Chizik confirmed the chances are slim that freshman fullback Ladarious Phillips will play this season. Phillips missed the start of the season because of a hurt ankle."He's missed so much ball to this point probably a redshirt is the direction where we're heading,'' Chizik said. "But you never know, circumstances can unfold and get you off the path you thought you were headed down. "He's doing much better. For a 290-pouind athlete, he's something special.**Chizik said No. 2 quarterback Barrett Trotter is "doing OK'' as he deals with an apparent minor knee injury he suffered last Saturday."We're still in the day-to-day mode about him,'' Chizik said. "He's practiced. For me to say he's 100 percent now, if he had to play, I don't think I'm there yet. But he's obviously going to make the trip. Every day that goes by is critical for his rehab."**Auburn practiced for about 75 minutes in shorts and helmets Thursday afternoon."When it's a conference opponent, there's a little more pop in practice. I think our guys are ready to play,'' Chizik said.**A caller to the radio show wanted to know about Shon Coleman, the 2010 signee who is undergoing cancer treatment."He's doing wonderful, as good as you could probably hope for him right now,'' Chizik said. Coleman attended the Clemson game."He's smiling. He looks good. It looks like he could step in and play right now,'' Chizik said. "I'm so proud of him. Mentally, where he's at right now, is shocking. I've learned a lot from him."
I asked a question a couple weeks ago about redshirting. Since Reed has played a few snaps, I suppose this means Reed will get a medical redshirt. As for Phillips, he will get a regular redshirt.
