Rhode Island school pulls out of game citing size of foe's players

By Cameron Smith

Football matchups between private schools can create mismatches based on a variety of factors, but it's rare that a school uses fear of injury to cancel a game.

That's exactly what happened Monday, when St. George's (R.I.) School canceled a game on Friday against fellow Independent School League member Lawrence Academy (Mass.), citing a concern over the disparity in the size of the two schools' players. St. George's is the first team to officially pull out of a game against Lawrence Academy (Mass.), one of two programs that has been completely dominant against ISL foes in recent years.

"This is strictly a safety issue,'' St. George's headmaster Eric Peterson told the Boston Globe. "We are trying to keep our kids reasonably safe in a game that can be terribly exciting but has risks."
Meanwhile, the risk of losing via forfeit -- the game may or may not be recorded as a forfeit, depending on the decision of a committee of three ISL headmasters -- is not something that concerns St. George's athletic director and football coach John MacKay. He said, "People don't understand what schools like St. George's are all about. Our students are into much more than athletics. Athletic success is so secondary in a place like this.''

As laid out by both Mike Carraggi of the Boston Globe and Danny Ventura of the Boston Herald, the numbers behind St. George's decision are pretty stark. Three Lawrence Academy offensive lineman weigh in at 300, 335 and 350 pounds, where St. George's players come nowhere near those marks. Still, the withdrawal is a stark statement of competitive inequity in the entire league. St. George's stands at 2-0 after going winless last year, but still decided it was better off withdrawing than playing a team that won all but two of its games by 40 or more points in 2009.

"The issue first came up last spring, then we talked about it off and on in the summer,'' Peterson told the Globe. "By the time the roster was in place, it became pretty clear.''

While St. George's withdrawal is a clear black eye on the ISL, the other possible solutions presented to coach MacKay were equally unpalatable. Among other options, Lawrence Academy reportedly offered to play the game at "half speed" to ensure no players got hurt. That hardly seems like a positive message to send to a program that claims it is trying to build gradual success among a young core of players.

Nonetheless, St. George's decision shines a spotlight on a significant problem that has been building within the ISL for years, according to Danny Ventura of the Herald.
Other coaches in the game have privately voiced their displeasure with Lawrence Academy. Judging by the volume of hits this story (which the Herald first broke yesterday morning) has received, it's certainly a newsworthy issue. What remains to be seen is whether any other team in the league follows suit and refuses to play LA.

League administrators were scheduled to meet this morning and we're sure one of the hot topics will be how to handle this situation. Is it a forfeit against SG or a no contest. You also have to believe that they will be feeling out the rest of Lawrence Academy opponents to see if they have plans on playing the game.

As one coach who asked his name not be used said: "The situation stinks. It's a black eye for our league."

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

My wife teaches at a 2A Christian Private school and my daughter graduated from there and my son goes there now.  As a result, I've been going to most of their games over the past few years.  Let's just get it out there.  The team is usually just a bunch of small, slow white boys.  They're doing pretty good this year at 5-1 but they run the old Wing-T to perfection, which allows them to stay in and win a lot of games if the other team is not stacked.  However, when they face any team with speed that can get to the corners, they're toast.

They may have a couple of kids in the 210-215 range but most everyone is more like 165-190.  They played one of the better 2A teams a couple of weeks ago, a team with guys in the 250+ range across both lines and a QB and running back that are both being looked at by D1 colleges.  It was ugly.  The 2 previous years, they made the playoffs in 1A and their prize was traveling to play Sweetwater.  If you follow high school football, you know that's no prize.  The 2 scores were 70-0 and 77-0.

Point being, play the game.  I'd much rather say "Remember when we ran into that buzz saw over in Seetwater and got our asses kicked..." than, "Whoa, we almost had to play Sweetwater.  Thank God our principal was looking out for us."

To this day, I remember my sophomore year us getting drubbed by UMS Wright Prep Academy 70-6...on our homecoming! I remember looking at them warming up and their size and speed made us look like a bunch of Smurfs that ate mushrooms instead of living in them. At that time, I was probably 120 lbs. soaking wet and any of their players could have had me for a snack. I can recall bits and pieces of other losses, but I recall that particular lose as good as I any memorable win. All I can say is thank God I was a sophomore and only played on the kickoff team. Yet as you said, anytime I get to talking about the old days with one of my former teammates, that game comes up about every time. Good times.

When I went to high school I played at a large 6A school. I remember going to private school games and thinking that they looked little and slow as hell. It wasn't all the players...but the team itself and the speed of the game looked like it was in slow motion. The funny thing is, when I came back from college to stand on the sidelines at Jeff Davis, I stood on the side line and thought the same thing. I wondered how the hell I didn't dominate at that level with the game being so damn slow...

I coach in a youth league that is no weight limit.  As a result we get kids that are too big to play in other leagues.  Lots of studies show that injuries occur as a result in disparity of age, and experience rather than weight, and the trend now is going to no weight limit leagues.  Of course, some like at this pussy ass school, don't believe such, and they do shit like this.  If you're going to field a football team, you nee to play the teams on your schedule.  You might get your asses kicked, but that's life.  Deal.

In our youth league, there is and there isn't a weight rule. There is no weight rule that keeps a kid from playing in his age group. However, there is a rule on how much any ball carrier can weigh. In other words, you can't give "big 'un" the ball so he can just run over all those boys half his weight. They have to play on the line, just like they probably would be used on a high school team.
