Quote
By Matt Tait

The opening game of the Turner Gill era at the University of Kansas was supposed to be about new beginnings and shiny smiles.

Feel-good stories were supposed to ooze from the home team’s locker room at game’s end, and the first-year head coach who made a name for himself by turning around an abysmal University of Buffalo program during the past four seasons was supposed to approach the post-game podium with his head held high and his chest puffed out.

But after Saturday’s shocking 6-3 loss to North Dakota State -- an FCS team coming off a 3-8 record in 2009 -- none of that took place. In fact, it was all Gill could do to get himself to the podium to face questions from the media, many of which he struggled to answer.

If Kansas can’t beat North Dakota State, scratch that, if Kansas can’t score a touchdown against North Dakota State, then how is it going to keep up with Georgia Tech, which comes to town Saturday?

“You never know how people are going to respond until you go play a game,” Gill said after the loss. “We got that opportunity [Saturday] and some people didn’t respond the way we had hoped they would. But, hey, they’ll come back and get ready to go here this week. We’re not going to really get a sense for where we’re at until we play several games, but we at least finally got a start.”

When Gill arrived in Lawrence in December, a year’s worth of frustration slipped out the door ahead of him. Gone was the disappointment over losing the final seven games of the 2009 season and so, too, was the iron-fisted rule of KU coach Mark Mangino, a former national coach of the year who led the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl championship during the 2007 season.

Mangino’s time at Kansas came to an abrupt end when, late in 2009, the school began investigating the way he ran his program and treated his players. A few weeks after the investigation began, Mangino resigned -- many assumed he did so under pressure seeing how he received a settlement of $3 million -- and a few weeks later, Gill was hired.

Many people wondered whether Gill was the right hire. On the surface, Gill seemed to be the polar opposite of Mangino, a man who, in eight years at KU, led the Jayhawks to five bowl appearances and three bowl victories. However, in four years at Buffalo, Gill compiled just a 20-30 overall record, which included a MAC championship during the 2008 season.

After Saturday’s loss to North Dakota State, Gill’s critics came out in full force on message boards and websites. Despite the rough start, Gill remained true to what he’s proved to be during his first several months on the job. Upbeat. Optimistic. Confident. Determined.

“They’re going to follow us as coaches, how we go about our work, how we go about our business, and we just have to go out and continue to teach,” he said. “Continue to coach ’em up, continue to move forward and continue to put out a plan that’s going to be best for us to be successful.”

Once upon a time that plan included an inspiring victory over North Dakota State and a run at Georgia Tech the following week.

Now, instead of spending the week building on an uplifting win in the opener, the Jayhawks have been left to lick their wounds, answer their critics and sort out a quarterback controversy -- starter Kale Pick was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of redshirt freshman Jordan Webb -- all while finding some way to get ready for the Yellow Jackets.

After Saturday’s embarrassment, some seemed shellshocked by the thought, others not so much.

“There’s going to be a lot of people doubting us after today,” Webb said. “But we’re Kansas; people doubt us every day.”

Added Gill: “With the two things, the unfortunate loss and then you’ve got a very good football team coming in this week, those two things are going to get you focused and get you in tune fairly easily.

I think the guy is nice, charismatic and charming. He's a great face for your school. BUT I don't think he has a clue on the sideline. Obviously.

From CFN - and I agree with this:

Quote
Gill + Nutt do not = twins

By Matt Zemek

On one hand, it is thoughtful and accurate to say that Kansas and Ole Miss find themselves in very similar situations this week. Within a narrow football-only perspective, it is indeed fair to point out that the Jayhawks and Rebels have already been deflated by balloon-busting embarrassments against FCS foes on home turf. One can quibble and nibble around the margins in terms of comparing the finer points of each situation, but it remains that Kansas and Mississippi can be linked because of what they failed to do against North Dakota State and Jacksonville State on Saturday. The point is readily apparent.

Now, with that having been said, let's end that discussion and make a more important statement: When looking at these programs through a moral or ethical lens and not using football as the filter for the outfits in Lawrence and Oxford, there are important differences between KU and UM.

It's true that Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins - though soon to retire - has presided over a basketball ticket scandal and has witnessed his reputation take a pronounced pounding if not an outright nosedive. Being a D-I athletic director is a messy business; the need to raise and manage substantial sums of money will demand an approach where the bottom line becomes the bottom line. Any sober realist must acknowledge as much. Yet, the past few years have given clear indications that for all the hardball elements which belong to the work of an athletic director, Perkins has slipped toward - if not below - the line of acceptability. Kansas athletics is not a beacon or a model for the rest of the country, and the Mark Mangino divorce from the university affirmed this reality. Point taken.

This is where the story turns, however. For all the ugliness surrounding Jayhawk sports, including the contentious events that marked the 2009 football season, Mr. Perkins chose to give Mangino a pink slip instead of stomaching him for another year. You can say that KU had a disappointing 2009 campaign, a fact which certainly made Perkins' decision easier, but it's worth acknowledging that many supposedly easy decisions from a moral standpoint are not made in big-ticket collegiate athletics. Perkins deserves some credit for wanting to cleanse his football operation of the bitterness that had infected it.

Then consider the man Perkins tabbed as Magino's replacement.

Turner Gill is as upstanding a man as there is in an FBS head-coaching position. Gill won the undying admiration and respect of the young men he led at Buffalo, and in a cutthroat profession, Gill is the last person who is likely to cut an ethical corner in order to grab an extra "W" on a Saturday. If the discussion is related to football acumen, the jury is still out on Gill, and this weekend's humiliating 6-3 loss to North Dakota State will only raise more questions about the ability of this 1980s football hero to win games outside the Mid-American Conference. However, in looking at life beyond the sole province of pigskin, Gill is a man every college football fan (outside of Kansas State and Missouri; we can make exceptions for heated rivalries) should root for.

This is not the case for Houston Nutt, for all the obvious Jeremiah Masoli-based, NCAA-influenced reasons that have been given ample ink and cyberspace over the course of the past month. Nutt has become - quite reasonably, it should be added - the poster boy for situational (faux-)morality that college football coaches so often resort to when their depth charts shrink or their team speed decreases. Just recall what Gill's mentor, Tom Osborne, did when the matter of Lawrence Phillips in 1995. That was another case in which a coach said a young man needed football after partaking in criminal activity (in that case, the crime Phillips committed - assault - was far worse than anything Masoli ever did). Nutt's words about being in the "people-helping business" - this from the man who hired high school coaches onto his Arkansas staffs just so he could retain the right recruits for his gameday needs - are as hollow as the scoreboard victory LSU won over North Carolina's farm team this past weekend.

And let's not get started on the matter of Ole Miss AD Pete Boone, who didn't like David Cutcliffe's morals but hired the sketchy Ed Orgeron and now has the increasingly embarrassing Mr. Nutt on his hands. (And oh, how about Andy Kennedy's brush with the law, too?)

Go ahead and link Kansas and Ole Miss solely on the football field. That's fair.

Laughing at both programs' troubles? Turner Gill deserves your support, not your chuckles.

http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/09/29/in-kansas-turner-gill-becomes-the-wizard-of-odd

Want to be out after 10 at night in the presence of a woman? Good luck, if you're a football player in Lawrence, Kan. Correction, make that a college football player in Lawrence; high school gridders have greater freedoms these days than anyone on the Jayhawks.

The "no women after 10 p.m." rule is one of first-year head coach Turner Gill's rules for the Kansas football team. The rule isn't just for public interaction, you also violate it if you're in the presence of a woman at her place or yours. While Gill has acknowledged that proving a violation is difficult, according to KUSports.com, "he (Gill) explained the penalty would be more severe if a KU player was involved with an incident and it was discovered that the player had broken the policy."

More severe?

What if the player isn't doing anything at all but hanging out with a member of the opposite sex? And 10 at night? Ten? Coaches are fond of saying nothing good happens after midnight -- which is completely wrong, by the way. Expanding that cliche to encompass nothing good happening before the nightly news is over? Most nursing home residents are living scandalous lifestyles compared to the antediluvian restrictions that Gill is foisting upon his players.

Is Gill aware coed dorms exist? What happens then? Do players have to show up every morning at five to run wind sprints as penance for having the temerity to live in the same building with unmarried women? Already, despite the opposite-sex prohibitions, Kansas has lost to North Dakota State in its home opener. Can you imagine how badly the Jayhawks might have lost to North Dakota State if players had been allowed to speak with women after 10?

I can, it might have been 9-3 instead of 6-3.

In order to pull off this road win and counteract the female prohibition at Kansas, North Dakota State's entire team must have pledged to be celibate for the rest of their lives. A small price to pay for a Saturday win.

How can you expect a college student to behave like a man when you insist on treating him like a child?
Turner Gill's expansive directives aimed at controlling his players every waking moment are the latest examples of football coaches becoming more and more like totalitarian dictators each year. Freedom of communication grows for college students? Football coaches push back in the opposite direction, limiting those freedoms in a misguided attempt to tighten the reins of program discipline. Facebook? Some coaches are banning it. Twitter? Boise State's Chris Petersen began the banning rush in the offseason. Now, Kansas doesn't want its football players around women at night. What's next, players not allowed to have cell phones?

Too late.

Kansas players can't do that either, not in the 24 hours leading up to a game, anyway. That's because the Kansas coaching staff confiscates the players' cell phones and won't return them until after the game. I'm not making this up. They actually take the phones. A parent or family member needing to reach your child in the event of emergency? You call the director of football operations.

Keep in mind, these are grown-ass men. Not seventh graders. Not adolescents. Grown men who could serve their country overseas, grown men who may be parents themselves, grown men who are being treated like infants unable to make their own decisions and handle their own priorities. How can you expect a college student to behave like a man when you insist on treating him like a child? As countless parents have already learned, stifling personal freedom doesn't lead to growth, it leads to greater dependence.

Football coaches want their players to be gridiron monks, the Dalia Lama with a 425-pound bench press. They want automatons walled off from the rest of the world who believe that the full import of their lives begins and ends in the 60 minutes they spend each week on the football field. But in today's era doesn't that control defeat the entire purpose of attending college? If, as the NCAA constantly argues -- most of our athletes are going pro in something other than sports -- then how does it help athletes to wall them off from the surrounding community of students?

Nor does this even consider the legalities at play here. Can a coach even have a written rule that would limit contact with women after 10 at night? Can a coach demand that a player relinquish his physical property for a period of time if that player doesn't want to? As a lawyer, I don't think so. If a player challenged these rules, I think he'd be able to prove that they were beyond the scope of his scholarship acceptance.

Indeed, it's a true shame that Kansas' faculty has allowed restrictions like these to take root for any students, regardless of who they are or what group they're associated with. Imagine if, for instance, a student association on campus had a written policy that all members, under threat of penalty, could not speak to members of the opposite sex on campus after 10 at night. Would that pass without faculty comment? I doubt it.

Restrictions like these represent the antithesis of what collegiate life is supposed to entail. Most students learn more from each other than they ever do from their books. Most men learn more about women in college than they've ever learned before. Indeed, by restricting student interaction with the opposite sex to limited hours, Gill is sending the message to his team that women are the enemy, modern day Bathshebas, existing only to tempt and lead them astray from their true purpose on the campus.

Which is to play football games.

And that's ultimately the real issue here, all of these restrictions strip away the fig leaf of academia, that these players are regular students who just happen to play sports. The reality is something much different of course, these are football players who just happen to be students. By placing these restrictions on his players Gill proves that even as a 48-year-old coach he still hasn't learned the most important lesson a football player can learn.

There is life outside of football.

Good luck with that.  I know the recruits will just love that rule.

Recruit: Damn, she fine!
Player Host: Yeah, she is, wish we could hang out but there is that rule.
Recruit: What rule?
Player Host: Oh, if Corch Gill finds us with wimmenz after 10, we get in trouble.
Recruit: Oh.
Recruit: (mumbles to himself)  I do have that offer from Corch Rhodes.

Any of you seen the general coed at Kansas.  I spent 10 lovely days there in the mid 90's and there were some ugly assed women there.

Gill is doing them a favor.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I worked for 10 months at a community college about 5 blocks from ASU's main campus.  Every day at lunch, we'd drive by their quad area...  Holy shit.

Never been to Oregon.  I've worked on campus at Minnesota, Indiana, Virgina, Maryland, Mizzou, and then near by ASU.
