I love the needle
« on: November 18, 2009, 10:49:40 AM »
Was listening to some music on my iPhone today while driving.

Shuffle of things.. Journey, Bee Gees, EWF, Neil Diamond, GnR, Disturbed, Tone Loc...

Then I get a track from Herb Alpert.  A Taste of Honey.  It was pulled from vinyl.  I didn't realize how much I LIKE the crackle and hiss from a needle.  Yeah the other songs are crystal clear and every minor imperfection brushed away, but there's something about that needle noise that I enjoy.

Herb could trumpet his ass off, BTW.  It's a nice interruption in the mix.

Gotta love that Tijuana Brass. :)

Ever listen to any of The Hollies' stuff from the late 60's/early 70's? Doesn't quite have the hissing sound but it does have the Motown sound  - like it was recorded in a cave with an echo. I like it.

I'd like to go back and get vinyl of everything I have pre-CD days.   Back in Black album by AC/DC is ten times more awesome with the needle scratch carrying it.  Same with Hotel California, The Long Run, Commodores and most of the KISS stuff.  Alive I and II on vinyl?  That's the shit.  I hate remasters now.

They have this stuff all over the internet.  Plus, I know there is a store in Birmingham that sells all vinyl.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "Guys don't mind hitting Michael Vick in the open field, but when you see Cam, you have to think about how you're going to tackle him. He's like a big tight end coming at you."

Yeah.  I know.  I'm more saying that Herb convinced me to replace as much of my "pristine" remastered music with good old scratchy vinyl sound as I am wondering where to get it.

I got a record player for christmas a few years ago and I usually try and check out the Thrift stores and flea markets for some treasures.  there is a lot of shitty records that are given the goodwill.

If you're looking for a good cheap place that has a shitload of vinyl, try the goodwill stores.  My friend got me hooked when I was living in N'awlins.  It was the last place I had even thought about having records.  Although you might have to dig through a lot of shit to find one good one, you'll never know what you might stumble upon.

Yep, they are loaded with vinyls.

Also, if you are ever in the Auburn/Opelika area for games, etc...check out that Antique Mall in Opelika on 280, Angel's I think its called. I bought a poopload of records there a while back. Four Tops, Beatles, Joe South, Simon and Garfunkel - good ones. Many more. They had 1000's. Most were 1.00-5.00 each.
