Alright All You Guitar Afficianados...
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:32:53 PM »
Did I spell that right?  I don't care. I've been a Mayer fan for quite some time.  Seen him in concert and followed his stuff and he's one of those artists that you either have a pre-conceived take on, based on what you hear on the radio...or you've taken the time to appreciate what this guy is really all about...besides slamming Jennifer Anniston like a screen door in a tornado.  Here he is as a young artist playing with AS GOOD AS IT GETS.  Not the most spectacular display of guitar work but you folks out there who play and understand what the guitar is really all about will realize what's going on here.  Enjoy if you will.  If not...move on.

Never was a big fan of Clapton.  Mayer's okay....

If you want the best blues guitar, go with Stevie Ray Vaughn or BB King.

Also, if you want to check out some of the best blue guitar playing you'll ever hear, check out Frankie Velvet and the Mighty Veltones at Metro Bistro Sunday nights.  Johnny Kulinich is possibly the best player in the Birmingham area.

I recognize Clapton.  Who is the homosexual standing to his left (edit) right?

I struggle with that ridiculous left/right shit.

Curtis Delgado is the correct answer but most have never heard of him.

You are correct, sir.  Schon is quite the axeman.  Here's the thing about great guitar players..it's all about style and your preference in music and that artists particular style.  You have to consider the fact that all of these guys named absolutely OWN the instrument.  In reality, none of them are or were more talented than the other.  They can all take a guitar and do just about anything they want, play any way they want or copy anyone's chops they want.

I'm not a big fan of the styles of either Santana or BB King.  But, that doesn't mean I don't recognize them as being among the elite guitar players of all time.  I'm just not going to go out and buy any of their stuff.  Same with SRV.  Incredible rock/blues guitarist and I really like a few of his songs.  But, to me his stuff got very repetitive.  Anyone who has ever gotten into Kenny Wayne Shephard knows this guy is a freak with that same style.  Saw him open for Van Halen years ago and he never once looked down at his guitar while he was ripping the shit out of it.  Dude was about 18 then.

I was going to mention Kenny Wayne Shephard, but there is no need now.  Spot on IMO.  You have to see him live to appreciate his ability.

I am indifferent about Santana, depends on the mood I am in, but know doubt he is elite.  I saw BB and Willie Nelson in concert last year.  BB was great in my mind, of course I like the blues.  Willie impressed me with his ability as well, I didn't realize that he could pick that well until I saw him live. There is no mistaken that sound from the wore out Martin he plays.  I left realizing that I just saw two great string benders. I will never have their ability, I just don't have it in me and I don't play enough.  It's been months since I have picked up my guitar. I also haven't see Mark Knopfler mentioned.  He is another great player as well.

If you like blues, give McKinley Morganfield (better known as Muddy Waters) a listen.  He can flat out play as well.

As far as the video you posted.  I consider Clapton one of the best ever and even though I don't like John Mayer, there is no denying his ability and that he is a great player.

EDIT:  I think that Zakk Wylde is one hell of a picker as well, you should see him live.

Years ago, Mark Knopfler and Chett Atkins put out a tape (There were no CDs at that time :)) Good stuff. Atkins also did one with Jerry Reed. The music was their own stuff, mostly instrumental, just the two trading licks.  It certainly wasn't anything you'd run out and buy but for a guitar nut like myself, listening to those two try and out do each other was incredible.  Jerry Reed was a lot like Willie Nelson in a way.  You thought about his acting and spoof songs he used to do.  The guy was a world class guitar player.

Agreed, that was pretty good stuff.

 I forgot about Chet. I have seen the Reed and Atkins stuff on youtube and it's really good.  It's like you said earlier. It's all about your style and taste in music.  Reed, Atkins, Santana, Nelson and others aren't necessarily my taste but I can listen and appreciate what they do.

I was in Nashville a few years back and the wife wanted to go to the Wildhorse Saloon so we went.  Steve Warner and Brad Paisley were making a guest appearance, didn't have clue that they were going to be there.  I thought "oh shit" and the wife was glad.  Anywho, they did a Reed/Atkins kind of performance and just played for about 10 minutes each trying to out do the other and I left amazed that they were as good as they were.  Two guys I would have never thought of and they are actually damned good. Not a style that I like, but I did appreciate the fact that they were more talented than I would have ever thought.
