Getting that itch to start watching some good horror flicks as we approach Halloween.  I try to keep a Friday night routine (when Reeltown has away games) to sit on the porch swing & watch a good movie/show/documentary/football highlight on the projector with a Spleef Lite.  I keep Friday nights for me for the most part to decompress from the week and all its stresses.

I prefer the classics that paved the way, such as the Halloween series, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, etc.  Looking to discover some "new to me" stuff that I can add to my annual must watch list.  Open to your suggestions, Gentlemen, if kind enough to share some.

This is not what you’re looking for, but I stopped caring about horror flicks many, many years ago when the only purpose became showing how much gore can we get away with.  Being an old timer, I grew up on the black and whites.  The Dracula’s, Frankenstein’s and Werewolf movies.  They used to have “All Night Shock-A-Thon’s” on Halloween and Friday the 13th.

I loved anything with some actual suspense, not just, “Who’s there?”  Surprise! Gutted from neck to nuts with a machete, organs splattered everywhere. Love flicks like The Fog, with Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis, Johnny Depp’s, Sleepy Hollow, (Don’t laugh.  I love that movie) and even the original Halloween.  Yeah, he was slashing people, but it was focused on the unstoppable nature of the character, and not bloody intestines all over the floor.  Is there a better moment in horror than when he raises back up in the background like the Undertaker?

My favorite scene is when his face emerges from the shadows. Low budget film, so well done.

P.S. - I love Sleepy Hollow with Depp & the cock of the walk, baby, myself!

The Purge franchise is ok for a few flicks, then it gets pretty redundant.

The Crazies was a decent zombie-type movie.

The Witch was a nice throwback/gothic horror.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe was plenty creepy, but the payoff isn't much.

Split (not technically horror) was a masterpiece with McAvoy's personality-shifting.  In that vein: Tusk (the ending is horrific)

Train to Busan.  Yes it's Korean. Yes you have to read subtitles. It is, however, quite possibly the greatest zombie movie ever created.  It is absolutely fantastic.  One of the best horror films I've ever seen.

Pluto has a Universal Monsters channel that runs films from the 30s-50s like Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Mummy. Right now it's showing Dr. Cyclops. From the 50s. Mad scientist shrinks people down to 3/5 size.  Dracula (1931) comes on at 10:30.  On top of that there are three other dedicated horror channels that can take you down some crazy rabbit horror holes. But wait! There's more.  Pluto also has an extensive selection of on-demand horror films. Many of the films on these lists can be found there (including Train to Busan).

Pluto is free and worth every nickel. I strongly endorse it.

Not sure I'd call Fraility with Bill Paxton and Mathew McConaughey "horror" but it's a decent suspense/thriller movie.

I liked Us by Peele.

Ive shifted more to the slow burn, suspense/thriller/fear of the unknown types personally. Caught the new one with Fanning that M Nights daughter did. Had some plot holes but it's my type now. Some creepy ass quiet forest in Ireland or Norway or Iceland, noises, all alone - as the movie progresses along and builds to some conclusion with suspense. Only during Halloween do I really like gore now. It needs a story around it to me, like the Saw franchise.

Split was great, and im interested to see his new one coming out now - Speak No Evil.

What about Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?  Underrated horror flick.

That scene where the Bumble had Rudolph and his family trapped in his cave, while Hermey and Yukon Cornelius were developing a plan to rescue them....if that didn't give you chills, you don't have a pulse.

Just tried.  None are free.  Looked up all of them and the only one free is the Danielle Panty Baker one. 

If Train to Busan doesn’t make you flinch (recoil) whatever and then get maybe a little misty a time or two?  I’ll give you a dollar.  Quite possibly the greatest horror(ish) movie ever made.  And it all happens in the daylight, none of that "whats thrashing around there in the dark?" nonsense.
