Are you tired of being promised, "Just the tip"?

Saw an article today about Americans getting fed up with tipping getting out of hand.  Let me say, I think I've always been a generous tipper.  I believe in it, especially when so much of a waiter or waitresses salary depends on it.  If I get even half way decent service, I'll leave what I think is a nice tip.

I don't sit there trying to figure up percentages.  I usually just look at the bill, remember the service we got, and leave what I hope is a decent amount.  But, that's just me.  I've got a buddy who puts pen to paper, and starts pulling loose change out of his pocket to get it to the exact percentage, all the while mumbling, "Bah Humbug" under his breath.

But now of course, being in an almost cashless society, the decision is made for you. You're handed a tablet of some sort, or the screen is flipped around at the cashier, and you're shown what your tipping choices are.  But wait, aren't I serving myself at an all you can eat buffet?  Isn't this a self-checkout ordering kiosk? Who am I tipping?

Or a waitress comes over, sticks your card in the check out tablet thingy, then hands it to you to tap the pre-determined tip selections, whilst hovering over you as if to say, "No, not that one.  Keep moving to the right." And there's no selection for "No Tip". 

What kind of tipper are you?  Has it gotten out of hand?

I'll usually tip 20% to the waitress if we go out to dinner.  If it's a big party, and they automatically add in 18%, I don't add anything else to it.  And I'll always tip bellmen/valet at hotels.

I refuse to tip when I order fast food, or order to go from Buffalo Wild Wings.  This season, I noticed that at basketball ball games, I had the option to tip for buying a popcorn or a coke.  Fuck that.

It’s this kind of greediness and downright evil that makes capitalism so inefficient. Why would you not tip for buying popcorn, you greedy bastard? This is reprehensible.

Seriously, I tip every time I buy something. I even leave some change on top when I buy something at vending machines.

The biggest problem in this particular instance is with the poster who started the thread being retarded.

tipping at a "full serve" restaurant will yield 15 - 20% ...based on the level of service. always careful of the place that sneaks in an automatic percentage.  often I'll ask the waitstaff how the tip is divided.

i enjoy tipping the bellhop ...those folks actually appreciate the gesture and usually if i'm staying at a hotel for multiple days i'll tip housekeep. usually a paper lincoln.

tipping rarely gets you any perks like yesteryear ...yeah some exceptions like a beach resort excursion or the bartender at the swim up bar. 

you're right it's becoming absurd. went to Greece last April ...just a different experience.  dinner bill is 28.50 ...round up to 30 euro is a very kind gesture and those folks bend over backwards for you.

local coffee shop, not bucky's, i would tip $1 on a $3.50 latte.  no thank you from the barista.   so i started on purpose dropping coins in the jar to capture the attention.  nope no thank you.  so i stopped.

The wife and I argue about this all the time.  Unless the service is downright horrible I will leave at least 20%. She is the one whispering Bah Humbug under her breath.  Keeps telling me that you don't tip on the tax...just on the subtotal.

Most places don't have a dedicated "to go" preparer, so the person that packaged your food likely had to take time away from their tables to do so.  Tip on "to go" orders, even if it's 10-15%.

I usually tip 20%. If you suck, you get 15%. But only if you refilled my glass a couple of times.

My daughter works at the Grand Marlin here in PCB. There is a huge range of tipping practices among the patrons. Wanna guess who predominately tips less or nothing at all? This held true when she waited in Kennesaw GA also.

Several years back, my son worked at Outback.  They did have designated to-go peeps.  He either did the to-go's, or made deliveries.  Obviously, there was a huge need for that during the Rona's. At the end of the night, all tips were pooled and split between the employees.

I learned it from my BiL who was one of my besties.

He was a democrat but he was one hell of an interesting guy and had some great stories about life as a traveling salesman. We were great friends.

He told me about leaving a hotel in ATL one morning and this young lady approached him and asked him if he’d ever had his toes sucked. He claimed he told her no mam.
