They Understand More Than We Think
« on: August 13, 2019, 05:56:44 PM »
Just a note about fur babies.  Two or three months ago, we had to make that dreaded drive with one of our pups.  First time ever.  We've been "fortunate" that any time we've lost one in the past, they just picked a night, found a comfortable spot and checked out somewhat peacefully.  Anyway, this little guy was going on 15 years old so as much as we miss him, there's no way you can argue with having one with you that long.

That leaves us with one, who is going on 13.  Ever since he came home with us, his "brother" was his constant companion.  They were never separated.  The little man that's still with us was younger and smaller and couldn't hurt a flea, but he was always the alpha male.  We were HIS mom and dad.  Wherever we went, he was right there.  If he was on the sofa with us and brother came walking over, he went to the edge to give him the stink eye and a stern lecture. An unfortunate part of being the alpha male also meant he occasionally thought he had to mark his territory and drop a shot of pee in a couple of designated areas.  The good thing is they were on tile so an easy clean up.

In the final weeks as his health declined, the sick pup would pretty much stick to 3 spots, which were buried deep in my closet, under the foot of the bed and in his doggie bed by the window.  A couple of weeks after he was gone, the wife looked at our pup now (Mushie) and said, "Go find brother" just to see what he would do.  He immediately ran to my closet and stared in.  Then he went to the foot of the bed and looked under....then over to the doggie bed.

We always took them on vacations to the beach and one of their favorite things to do was to go out on the balcony and stick their heads through the railing to watch the people and other pups go by.  Do it for hours.  We just got back from vacation yesterday.  There were several times that Mushie would come out on the balcony, timidly walk toward the railing, then back off and walk back inside.

His demeanor has changed since brother left.  But it's become one that's 10X more clingy to mom and dad. He hasn't peed on the floor once either.  He misses his brother.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

Sorry, Snags. We had to put down our 16 year old this time last year. Never easy. What amazed me was how much him not being there changed my morning routine.

No doubt.  I just find it interesting how it affected the little guy we have now.  We fed them a lot of people food.  They would sit side by side and take turns getting their bites.  Now, he usually just turns away.  It's like his own routine got interrupted.

So since we are on dog stories I am going to tell one from last week.  I have always heard these stories of dogs saving their families from fires or other things but never had it happen until last Friday.

So we have two.  A 11 year old German Shepherd and a 18 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback.  Last Friday night/Saturday morning about 0315 the Ridgeback comes into our room and starts whimpering like he needs to go out.  We both wake up and the skirt says that she will let him out.....Except that he does not whimper in the middle of the night to go out.  He sleeps through the night and goes out when I get up in the morning.  Always has since we brought him home.  Realizing this I get up as well and we smell something burning.  Turns out the motor in one of the HVAC units had burned up.  Didn't start a fire but the motor/coils itself burned up.  I truly believe that the little shit woke us up cause he knew something was wrong.

Now in thinking about it later that morning the skirt asks why the more lovable and usually dependable German Shepherd didn't try to wake us up instead of just laying there and the only thing I could think to say was that he thought we were Jewish and he's racist.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
